By “utilitarian” I wasn’t just talking about the families involved, but I meant that in arranged marriages, spouses often see each other as means to an end. The woman provides the man with sex, housework, and the promise of heirs, and in exchange the man gives her security, both financially and psychologically. It is very much a quid pro quo arrangement, as opposed to mutual self-sacrifice. Not that all arranged marriages are like this, but many are, and I think there is a risk of objectification, especially in cultures where there is a general tendency to see women as objects to be used for the benefit of others, not inherently valuable in themselves. (And yes, I realize some “love” marriages are like this too, but I doubt most people would consider it ideal.)

Now, I must say that I do have a bias here, in that I know of a horror story about a teenage girl who grew up in the US and had a boyfriend, being sent back to her “home country” and forced to marry a total stranger. She eventually escaped and moved back to the US, and apparently the marriage ended in divorce or annulment. I think most “Westerners” would see her as an abuse, even a rape victim. But per her family, she’s the one who’s in the wrong, who wasn’t being a good wife/daughter.

Now, certainly this was closer to “forced” marriage than “arranged”, and I don’t think Jim Bob and Michelle are literally forcing their children into their marriages, but then again, they are so sheltered, I really wonder if they really are equipped with enough knowledge to make a meaningful choice.

I also find the whole idea that young people need to be chaperoned 24/7 in order to ensure chastity, to be insulting in a way, as if they are so lust-filled that they will inevitably sin if left alone even for a few minutes. “Reality couples” in general seem to have a very poor success rate, and though one could argue this is because most of them are immoral heathens anyway (such as the Kardiashians), I’m sure having cameras in their faces ALL the time, knowing anything they say or do could wind up on national TV, doesn’t help. But in a way, isn’t that merely the logical conclusion to the idea of a courtship being conducted “in public” with chaperones?

It’s also the case that, as has been mentioned on CAF many times in the context of NFP, temptations to sexual sin hardly disappear upon marriage. Married people are still tempted to commit adultery, watch porn, masturbate, etc. So if the only way kids are taught to handle sinful temptations is “never be alone with each other”, well how are they really going to learn self-control?
When the family and boyfriends were there, holding hands praying, Jessa held onto Bens sleeve instead of holding his hand in prayer. I think another time a kid squeezed in between them. I mean, what do they think is going to happen?

And did anyone see the episode where Jim Bob staged a mock arrest and the two couples were handcuffed together? That was weird enough but then hey used two handcuffs on Jessa and Ben so their (gasp) hands didnt touch!

Is it certain that they are a quiverfull family?
Yes. Bill Gothard has been involved in several scandals over the past few years so that have not mentioned him recently, but they have said so before.

About the chastity, they go from no hand holding to suddenly married and procreating. That has to be very confusing and stressful. Of course they might not consummate on their wedding night. Jill got pregnant quickly. I think I would be scared.

she passes it off in the buddy system. It’s one thing to be a helpful big sibling, it is another to saddle responsibility on older siblings. I did have an older sister that is 12 years ahead of me and my brother (15 years) and we have a great relationship with her, she helped my mom but she also went to school and college and had a life. Big age gap siblings do have a different kind of relationship but that isn’t what is going on here.
The kids have what they call “jurisdictions” and are responsible for keeping the house and I guess family, running smoothly.
IMO its one thing for kids to have chores but these kids aren’t doing chores. Mom and dad decided to have as many kids as they can and the kids are expected to help run the house . Cant remember the last time I saw Michelle cook for her family.

Im glad Im not the only one wondering about that. Id be scared too. I also thought it was weird that Anna commented on Jill and Derricks first kiss and said something about how Jill was so into it that they’ll probably get pregnant right away.

Growing up my siblings and I had jurisdictions or areas of responsibility. Mine was helping cook the family meals since cooking was one of my passions, alongside vegetable gardening. As I grew older, my sphere of responsibility increased to meal planning and grocery shopping.

To me, this is one of the best ways to foster responsibility, teach life skills and boost self-esteem. Seeing the positive contribution they can make to their family does wonders for a child’s self-esteem.

I agree. This is how families have always done it in the past when it was normal to have 10+ kids. It’s necessary for everybody to pitch in to keep it together. I think the “norm” that we have now where kids have a few “chores” and then have free time is probably very new in history.

I disagree with it.

I disagree with it.
I do too. There is a difference between doing chores and helping out and not having a childhood. Yeah I guess people did that 100 years ago. It doesn’t make it ok.

Anna really commented about Jill being really into her first kiss!?!? That is wierd. Can you imagine your first kiss being on TV like that! Yikes.

I wonder how the younger buddies feel when thier “mothers” marry and leave home. I have seen them go their sisters for comfort after falling instead of Michelle.

Yeah, but i dont think she worded it exactly like that.

If Jim Bob is busy getting his daughters married off, why did he skip over Jana, the oldest daughter. And what about her twin brother? I’ve read articles that both are not happy with some of the family’s rules but what kids ever are?

I admire the family. I certainly wouldn’t be able to do it but I think they’re doing a good job. The kids have been given responsiblities and handle them very well. What they’ve learned in the family are the same skills needed throughout life and in the work place. Are they lacking in other areas? Probably. I’m sure if they were totally living in the outside world they’d be as shocked by the culture just like most of us are shocked and we live in it.

I see more positives in this family than the train wrecks  displayed by HONEY BOO BO (mother now dating the sexual abuser of her oldest daughter), HOUSEWIVES OF WHATEVER (how-much-stuff-can-I-own, cursing, dippy kids none of whom I can imagine hiring, immodest dress, multiple marriages, and parents in prison).

aicirt, I don’t think those of us critiquing some aspects of the Duggars’ lifestyle are saying there’s nothing to praise about them. I’d agree that “I see more positives in this family than the train wrecks”. I realize we don’t know the whole story just based on edited videos and interviews (for the Duggars have been a lot more involved with “mainstream” media lately, I’ve seen Duggar interviews in many secular magazines such as People).

However, just because their lifestyle avoids certain sins and pitfalls of more “worldly” living such as Honey Boo Boo, the Kardashians, etc., doesn’t mean they are automatically morally superior and above criticism. (Much as the fact that earlier generations may not have been as sexually immoral, doesn’t mean they can’t be criticized for being more racist and bigoted than now.) I am trying to be fair to them and I don’t agree with ALL the critics, certainly not the insinuations that they are abusive “when the cameras are off”, with no proof other than who they associate with.

But we’ve seen the Duggar approach to courting on TV with 3 couples now (Josh/Anna, Jill/Derek and Jessa/Ben). It seems to have worked well with the first two, but there is no such thing as a perfect system and I am concerned about Jessa/Ben, simply because Ben does NOT seem ready for marriage. I don’t think Jim Bob is specifically “trying to marry his daughters off”. Also the TV show doesn’t give us everything and it’s possible Jana has had suitors of her own, but the family didn’t want that shown because none of them were found to be marriage material.

As for the awkwardness of no physical contact suddenly proceeding to full-on sex; as I recall, Jessa did say in an interview that they were allowed to hold hands when they were finally engaged. (Note that the show episodes air months after the events actually occured.) And I don’t think there’s anything specifically “wrong” with saving the first kiss for the altar. The same arguments used to denigrate that choice could be, and have been, used by secular society to denigrate the choice of saving sex for marriage, that oh isn’t that going to make for an awkward wedding night, what if you’re not sexually compatible, etc.

That being said, I don’t agree with “24/7 chaperoning” because (1) the couple depends on the chaperone, not inner self-mastery, to insure they won’t fall into sexual sin and (2) the couple cannot foster EMOTIONAL intimacy if they are in public all the time. I don’t know what the statistics are, but I have read stories of couples who courted their way to marriage who wind up divorced because they just didn’t have the chance to know each other well, and in the worst case scenario, wound up in abusive marriages.

In general, while I don’t think courtship is “wrong” I do think it’s “wrong” when its proponents hold it up as some surefire way of ensuring people don’t fall into sexual sin and ensuring happy marriages. As for the “but this is the way people USED to do it, dating is a modern invention that’s brought us sexual sin” argument, people USED to simply arrange marriages for their children, too. People used to sell their children into brothels when they couldn’t afford to feed them. (And in many parts of the world, still do). People used to preach against inter-racial marriages, even legally forbid them. Just because a practice has been going on for generations does NOT automatically mean they are perfect, or the best possible one.

I’m sure many who denigrate dating will say “courtship” or even arranged marriages were superior because they were less likely to end in divorce. But as I’ve mentioned before, there was nothing magical about that, of course the marriages were less likely to end in divorce back then because it was either impossible to get unless it you were rich and well-connected, or, even if it was posssible, heavily socially stigmatized. (Even LM Montgomery’s books, set around 1900, refer to long-estranged couples on PEI, some long-separated, one in which it’s strongly implied the husband has a mistress, who stubbornly refuse to get divorced, even though it was legally possible, because that’s Just Not Done Here, but I would NOT call such marriages “successful”.)

ETA: Though to clarify my thoughts regarding the Duggar approach to sex, I will say that it’s possible to be overly repressed about sex and paint sex as a dirty thing, or something only the man is supposed to enjoy, and this can certainly lead to problems in marriage, even vaginismus in the woman that means they cannot consummate the marriage. And in the “good old days” of arranged marriages, some brides were kept so ignorant about sex, often in an attempt to make sure they were virgins, that they did not have enough information to truly consent, and were essentially raped on their wedding nights.

So I do think an emphasis on chastity before marriage CAN go too far, but I don’t see any sign the Duggar girls are kept totally in the dark about sex, even though some of Jim Bob’s comments do seem to hint at his holding a stereotypical view about men wanting sex more than women, but certainly MANY posters on this site seem to share that assumption as well.

Three more things I think are weird (but they do fascinate me for some unknown reason)
  1. when asked for advice. one of Jills younger brothers, not among the youngest but young enough that it sounded creepy, said “be fruitful and multiply.” A kid doesnt need to be thinking about that.
2)one of the olde boys commented, and to me it was sadly, that his dads always on him about finding a wife or girlfriend.
  1. somebody, maybe Jill, insinuated the short courtships is because they have trouble waiing for a sexual relationship.

Joy also commented on Ben moving on the property and said something like itll either strengthen the relationship or “it’ll fizzle out.” Lol.
Sounds like she has some insight.

I don’t know why Jana did not marry. I do know that the Duggar’s follow strict patriarchy. Daughters are to stay under the authority of their fathers until they are married, then they ‘transfer authority’ to their husbands. With patriarchy comes the Stay at Home Daughter Movement. Daughters are taught from the time they are toddlers that their focus in life is to become a helpmeet. The fathers have the final say in their adult daughter’s lives. They spend their life preparing to be keepers of the home. Helpers to their mothers and blessings to their family. I guess that sounds good, but remember, they have been told this theirwhole lif, they are not choosing this. So Jana stays home at 24 with no education, and has never had a job outside the home. She does more around the house than Michelle, who seems to just supervise the rest of the family. She was busy sewing the bridesmaids dresses for Jill’s wedding as the rest of the family enjoyed a tea party.

The leaders of the patriarchy movement have recently been involved in sex scandals.
Bill Gothard and Doug Phillips. Doug Phillips is the man who presented Michelle with the Mother of the Year award. The girl he victimized was literally raised to e a victim. go ahead and google it. don’t want to type too much about it. Sara Maxwell from Tutus2 is in her thirties, till living at home and taking care of her family and nieces and nephews.
so to sum it up. Jana might be happy, but she was never given the choice. Think about what you want for your daughters. think about if you were raised to be subservient to men. Jana is 24, so maybe not such a big deal. think about being in your thirties waiting for a husband. I guess you can romanticize this, I don't see how this honors God though. At least as a Catholic, women can still choose to have careers, or marry Jesus and be a Sister, using the skills and talents God gave them.

It has been reported that some of the younger children are upset about the older ones getting married and leaving. There is a difference between helping out in household chores and responsibilities which is normal in any larger family with a larger age gap and this rather forced lifestyle arrangement where the older children become co-parents.

I thought they may have tried to set up Jana with Zach Bates of the Bates family that is likewise doing a reality show called Unitied Bates of America. From what I read that show has been less interesting and floundered some due to being boring.

I agree with you 100%. Jana isn’t given a choice along with all the rest of the children. I know there are some blogs about Jinger and the hope that Jinger will bolt. I think in one of the clips I watched. Jinger expressed a desire to “live by a city” and not far out in the country. Then two of her other older sisters mentioned to Jinger that she needed to work on her contentment with God. There is nothing wrong with Jinger having an opinion about where she would like to live and her desires. Did it every occur to these people that maybe Jinger’s desire might have come from God? Then the next day Michelle got on one of the morning shows to explain away Jinger’s comments. I think another show had Jinger being taken hunting and she was the only girl that went out to hunt turkeys. Then Jim Bob decides to give an adult type talk to Jinger, in front of the cameras and with one of his male hunting buddies at his side. Jinger looked embarrased while Jim Bob and the buddy obviously thought it was funny. Sicko stuff if you ask me.

Robwar, I am very familiar with the blog you are talking about.

I just wanted to say to the people who romanticize, and see this family as a wonderful example. I only want you to consider one thing. When kids escape, or leave these families- and there are very many who do- they are often either cut off entirely or looked at as bad rebellious people, and harshly criticized by their community. Many of them are good people, and some even remain Christian. I hope you would not judge these people and support them. I am talking about anybody who grows up in a very strict and extremely religious home, and leaves. It’s not always the kids who are at fault in these situations. Think about what kind of rules you would want to have to follow, and how you would like to be treated.

petitfleur; I did google Bill Gothard and Doug Phillips. The sexual abuse allegations are bad enough, but I also had the pleasure of reading some comments defending them and blaming the victims. Many of the defenders do seem to believe the idea that women are to blame for a man’s sexual sins because men simply cannot control themselves when “tempted”, and have no idea what sexual abuse is about.

Unfortunately, children raised by authoritarian parents in general are known to be at higher risk of sexual abuse, because they are taught to blindly obey those in authority, no matter what. They are taught they CAN’T say “no”, ever. And in a subculture that essentially treats women like children, bound to obey a man in authority over them, certainly is a set up for sexual abuse of adult women as well.

robwar; while I think you make very good points, I can’t say I agree with you 100%, because you seem convinced the Duggars aren’t just misguided, but are actually bad people who deserve to have something bad happen to them. The tone I get from your post about Jinger is “those Duggars are horrible abusive people and I HOPE some of their children abandon them, it would serve them right!” I can’t quite agree with that.

Now maybe you’d disagree, but I think that all parents - even “abusive” ones – deserve the minimum charitable assumption that they actually love their children. (I also say this because many parents think “I can’t possible be abusive because I love my kids, abusers are horrible evil people who abuse their kids for sadistic lulz, and I’m not like that”. Demonizing “abusers” may make us feel good in comparison, but also aids others to live in denial that they may have abusive tendencies themselves.)

Now, I think it’s very possible that some of their children will eventual rebel against them, it seems the son they sent to some boot camp may have done so already. But I don’t think it’s charitable to gleefully chortle at them if it happens, even if it might be for the best interest of the children themselves. It would be very sad, because as petitfleur states, often in such controlling families, this results in permanent estrangement, and that’s sad.

I have no idea where how you interpret my posts about the Duggars the way you have. I have been in the past attended Bill Gothard’s seminars a number of times. I am very familar with his teaching. I did not say that the Duggars are horrible people. I did say and have said that we do not know what happens in that household when the cameras are not rolling. There are a number of blogs out there that want some of the children like Jinger to bolt. I didn’t say I supported those types of blogs or their view point. Also you have accused me of being uncharitable. Now on this thread, others posted that they thought Ben was immature, I have not said that about him. Others haved called Jim Bob creepy. Again I didn’t say that about him. I have expressed concern for all their children. That is legitimate. Calling people creepy and immature is uncharitable. I do question in a number of things what both Michelle and Jim Bob are doing with their children which starts with doing a reality show about themselves to begin with. Children are not stage props no matter how religious and good you think you are.
