Ottawa Citizen:
Ipsos-Reid surveyed 1,003 Canadians by telephone last week. Eight per cent of respondents, and seven per cent of Roman Catholics surveyed — numbers that if extrapolated across Canada would equal two million people — personally know a victim of sexual abuse by a Catholic priest.
Extrapolate: Estimating values on the outside from values on the inside.

If I am to understand this correctly, only 1,003 Canadians were polled, and they overstretched this data for the whole of Canada? Or have I got this wrong?
Ottawa Citizen:
Six per cent of all respondents and eight per cent of Roman Catholics surveyed, personally know of a Catholic priest in their parish or neighbourhood who has been criminally charged with sexual assault;
What difference is personally known to actually known?

14 percent of the 1,003 polled? That has to be about only 140 people who know? It’s still high I admit, but still.

If the data is consistent, it should be 14 percent of 2,000,000 correct? Which suggests that 280,000 only actually know?

I’ll admit I’m confused on this, but did they only poll 1,003 people and extrapolate it? Or did they actually consult 2,000,000 people?

God Bless.

Chris.

'At least two million Canadians personally know someone, a friend, relative or acquaintance, who has been sexually assaulted by a Roman Catholic priest, suggests a new national poll.

It also suggests that a majority of Canadians, and even a majority of Roman Catholics, believe Pope Benedict XVI is guilty of covering up abuse by pedophile priests.’
Lies and garbage straight from the mouth of Satan.

God bless Benedict and keep his enemies at bay.

Amen to that! what does the world want with these holy men? all a priest has to do now is be metres away from a child and the next thing he knows he is being slapped with a paedophile suit. I have priest friends and they would not allow themselves to be in the same room with a child un chaperoned. See what we are doing to our holy men? I admit there are some who are twisted and evil, but a whole lot of good ones have been adversely affected by all this. Remember when Jesus used to draw kids around him sitting some on his lap and talking to them? well, this generation would have added a paedophile suit to all the other cruelty he suffered!! Oh mankind when will we learn?

Still at it, old son!

Do you have some sort of unhealthy fascination with child-molesting, and dredging up stuff from the sewer?

Or are you just up to your regular occupation of Catholic-bashing?

By the way: the Church doesnt function based on the results of opinion polls. So, what you or anyone else mistakenly (or otherwise) believes about the Pope is worthless. Attacks by mosquitos and fleas and other annoying insects cause discomfort; but theyre not fatal. As a Divinely-instituted entity, the Church can`t fail.

Raymond Arroyro interviewed George Weigel, papal biographer, on his show last Friday. Apparently, between 1900 and 2000, if I remember the dates correctly, there were 290,000 assaults on US children in the public schools. ewtn.com/WorldOver/index.asp

Weigel stated that Pope Benedict is planning on restructuring the Irish church. That’s good. However, I too believe that what is planned should have come as an announcement directly from the Vatican.

I was educated in parochial schools. Some religious were nice, some were kind. I’m well aware of many others, both nuns and priests, who were arrogant and intimidating. Parents were also intimidated. But I can’t understand why there weren’t some parents who, having discovered their kid was abused, would have taken matters into their own hands either through the law or by confrontation.

Weigel reported that there are 68 million Catholics in the US. At the present time, there’s six credible abuse cases.

This “poll” smells fishier than a Lenten fish fry. I’m not about to take this one seriously.

One in Five (20%) **Global Citizens Believe That Alien Beings Have Come Down To Earth and Walk Amongst Us In Our Communities Disguised As Humans **
India (45%) And China (42%) Most Likely To Believe Aliens Are In Our Midst
Thursday, April 08, 2010
New York, NY— A new Reuters News poll conducted by Ipsos and released today indicates that one in five (20%) of presumably human adults surveyed in 22 countries (representing 75% of the worlds GDP) say they believe that alien beings have come down to earth and walk amongst us in our communities disguised as “us”.
I find it amazing that these guys can get an accurate reading on 20% of the world’s population!! Let see, if the current population is 6,692,030,277, then they are telling us that 1 338 406 045 people believe this story. That is 1.3 Billion people they are speaking for…

Yep. These guys certainly have time on their hands. 🙂

God bless,
Ut

Although I have to admit, that I also personally know of a pedophile priest. He gave me my first confession in grade 6. Fortunatly he was just a homosexual who made a pass at a teenager. I guess I was too young for him.

God bless,
Ut

Ottawa Citizen:
The results of the Ipsos Reid poll are considered accurate within 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
You shouldn’t really doubt the elite accuracy of these polls. 😃

You can’t possibly extrapolate something like this over the whole population. That’s plain unethical. With politics, yes you can do this because a large enough and unbiased sample size you can get a pretty good look at the overall population. With something experience based? No, you can’t possibly extrapolate that because there’s way too many unaccounted for variables.

This is just unethical manipulation of data.

Here’s the bottom line for just this poll, 8% respondents + 7% R Catholics = 15% of 1003 people = about 150 people. That number is ridiculous across this sample size. Now the extrapolation may be a little far fetched, much like in political polls of only 100 people, but this alone is a shocking discovery.

Just to nit pick a bit, I believe the results only said that 8% or the total respondents and 7% of Catholics said yes. Those 7% of Catholics are contained in that 8% total number (so it’s not 8+7=15). So the number is about 81 people. Not that even 1 is good, but just don’t get the math wrong.

Were the people who filled out the survey and who replied that they personally know people who’ve been abused by Catholic priests…are they lying or being influenced by Satan as well?

Wow, talk about blaming the messenger.

The fact remains, If the Priests hadn’t sexually abused the children, there wouldn’t have been a story for me to post.

It didn’t take much dredging, it was a front page story.

I would have thought you’d reserve your anger for the child molesters and not the news media for reporting on the abuse, or people who post the news stories. 🤷

Please explain why and cite all sources while doing so.

Now,why would I know this would be breathlessly reported by Zatzat. A certain percentage believes the moon is made of green cheese and that the world is flat.Zatzat, your gullibility or to be more kind willingness to believe anything that smears the Church is staggering and rather suspect…

I happen to believe that the majority of Canadians are illinformed mouth-breathers and I’m allowed to say that because I myself am Canadian and I know what goes on in this country and how the media(especially the Ottawa Citizen)manufactures consent. Please ZatZat you’ve gotta do better than that.

The Sun chain, the Associated Press and Canwest have all picked up the story. No, sadly it’s not a conspiracy from a lone regional paper.

Again, sadly, it’s not because Canadians are mouth breathers, it’s because those 2 million Canadians have had the misfortune of having known someone who was sexually abused by a Priest.

That is impossible! 1% - 5% of Priests have allegedly been involved in sex abuse in the last 50 years, worldwide, there is no way that Poll is true. And anyway, how many people where polled?

81 people where polled. Then where does that statistic come from?!

Sensationalism sells newspapers.I remember a “study” in Canada that claimed that 80% of Canadian women had been sexually assaulted by men at some point in their life. The study was thoroughly discredited and dismissed as a politically motivated canard as this one will be.

I think that that figure is completely bogus and I would like to see the statistical method employed and questions asked and exactly WHO commissioned this “study”.The population of Canada is 33,000,000 and i simply do not believe it.I have hundreds of friends, associates and acquaintences and we have ALL discussed “the scandal” and not one has ever indicated being personally aware of ONE instance of priestly abuse,so just based upon that your"study" is bogus.According to your "study"dozens should have mentioned this.
