All faithful Catholics should know who we, as Catholics, mean when we say Pope. All this quibbling does no good to solve a thing. Our Roman Pontiff goes by several names, I could call any man pope but would that make him the head of Christ’s True Church? Of course not.
Jesus Christ founded only one Church and appointed one man, Peter to be its first Pope, (Holy Father, Pontiff), and now Pope Francis is the 266 Pope of CHRIST"S One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. We Catholics should be thankful we belong to this Holy Church and be willing to love and defend it, as the last several Popes have begged us to do in these troubled times… And to help others to come to know and love Christ in HIS Holy Church. There is no greater joy than this.
As for “Pope power”, there is only one Pope and his “power” comes from the Holy Spirit and no one can equal that. Either we believe Christ when he teaches us or we believe whatever we want. Personally I’d rather believe Jesus Christ. God Bless, Memaw

I guess my point is this. That no one ever calls him “Pope”.
Except that everyone in English speaking countries, when they want to refer to the incumbent of that particular bishopric, refers to “the Coptic pope”, using exactly those words. Everybody understands that the term doesn’t mean the Roman pope. (At least I’ve always thought everybody knew that.)

IGNORANCE

…was the first word which came into my mind after reading this discussion. I am very sorry but the second was worse.

Christ (according to Catholic belief) “made” His Church, He made one Church, and gave apostles power, right and duty to lead His Church. And He decided to establish head of this aposles, namely Peter. There is no word “pope” in Bible, no Patriach of West, no Primate of Italy, no Metropolitan of Roman province, no bishop of Rome…

Peter was in Antioch prior to Rome and in our nowadays terminolgy (let us say) he was bishop of Antioch (who was later granted title of Patriarch of Antioch and the whole East). Then he was operating in Rome and was bishop of Rome. At the same time there was (probably) his succesor in Antioch, but Head was still Peter. This is one of reasons that Peter’s succesor is in Rome and not in Antioch. After Peter’s death his successor were in Rome – bishops of Rome. Still no pope, but yes… the Head without title pope.

Later concils created metropolitans and patriarchs. Concils also told that it was OK to call bishop (patriarch) of Alexandria as Pope as it had been being done. And after Alexandria also bishop (patriach) of Rome was granted title Pope. So there were two popes without any “damage” to one Head.

Chalcedon:
In Alexandria there are Chalcedonian (Catholic and Orthodox are still one) and non-Chalcedonian popes.
Non-Chalcedoninas are now known as ORIENTAL Orthodox, not Eastern Orthodox.

1054:
We could have three ones in Alexandria if there was split.

now:
In Alexandria there are
  • Oriental Pope and Patriarch of the Great city Alexandria and the whole Africa
  • Eatern Orthodox Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and the whole Africa
  • Catholic Patriarch of Alexandria and the whole Africa (for Coptic Catholics) who could we also titled as Pope but not the Head.
Catholis Church officially says that in Churches where there is a valid apostolic succession, there are real bishop who are to be called bishops and Catholic Church accepts and uses titles of patriarch for Eastern and Oriental Orthodox patriarchs. There are also catholicoi but it is not important now. And Catholic Church also recognises title pope for non-Catholic patriarch od Alexandria.

And to triumphalism and catholic egocentrism:
Many “Westerns” do not know there are Eastern Catholic Churches also having cardinals (and sometimes prefects), many Catholics have problem to tell that non-Catholic Christians are at least “something like Christians”, many Catholics are absolutely noninformed about other Christans, their faith and their history (often the same “noes” for history of Catholic Church), and many Catholics would like to gravitate everything to their Church and ignore the whole other world. And according to my opinion (not humble in this point) this is very bad.
Not a long time ago I read article from one convert from some of American Protestant Churches. He says that his familty asked him after his conversion questions like: “And you still believe in God?” “You really still believe in Christ?” and so on. I think many Catholics do the same. Unfortunately.
Furthemor, there are many apostolic sees in the world (some occupied by Catholic Patriarchs) but because of some reason Catholics use the terms Apostolic See (with capital letter(s)) just for Roman see if there are no specific circumstances.

And no one says that Coptic Pope of Alexandria, Eastern Orthodox Pope of Alexandria, Catholic Patriarch (pope) of Alexandria, and Catholic Pope of Rome are same in their duties, ministry, understending of office, and definitely not in being Heads.
For Copts their pope is just head of their church, even not of all non-Chalcedonians. For Eastern Orthodox it is just head of one of 14 local churches, one who is equal with other heads.
Imagine that throuhgout the time people “develop” title “Loving Heart” for the Head of the Church and pope would be just historic title. Would it be a problem? And if (Catholic) bishop of Bagdad would by the first Loving Heart, bishop of Rio de Janeiro the second and Peter’s successor the third, would this be attacking his authority? Or should be Loving Heart absolutely prohibited for anyone with just one exception?
As has been pointed out, ‘Al baba’ is the exact equivalent of il Papa - Pope in Italian.

As an aside - dang, doesn’t it make you wish the two had somehow managed to meet up with Benedict at the same time? Maximum Pope power!!!
(bold mine)

If really maximum “Pope power” then: Roman current and emeritus Popes, Oriental Pope of Alexandria, Eastern Orthodox of Alexandria, and to maximize as much as possible I suggest also current and emeritus Catholic Patriachs of Alexandria (Popes), so 4 or may be 6 Popes.

On more question to appropriateness: Those of you who consider it unappropriate to call Coptic Pope with the word “Pope”, do you not consider in unappropriate to call HH Benedict XVI as “Pope Emeritus”? This title was chosen by him before leaving ministry and de facto (and may be officialy, I don’t know) recognized by HH Francis.

And a little more:

Byzanthine Catholics (may be also others, I don’t know) pray for “Pope of Rome” or in some languages more exactly “Roman Pope” during Divine Liturgy. This is agreed and approved by Rome. Doesn’t this look like that there is/are also another pope(s)?

HH Benedict XVI decided to have sung Axios during his inauguration mass to papal ministry (not the same as inauguration as Bishop of Rome in Latheran Cathedral where his Roman episcopal cathedra is). And in this Axios he was entitled as “Papa Romi”. For example YouTube surely could provide a proof. (I am very poor in Greek so may be I’m not absolutely exactly.)

In all languages with which I am at least partly familier it is absolutely normal and standard to call Patriachs of Alexandria as Popes (as they really are). Including English.

There were mentioned also other “Holy Fathers” within Catholic Church.
Unofficially there is Red Pope (Prefect of Congregation for Evangelisation of Peoples) and also Black Pope (Superior General of Jesuits) – but this is often considered to be derogatory, especially when not used cordially by Catholics but by Protestants (especially if 200-500 years ago).

Yes, you’re right, your quibbling does no good! We are called by God to defend His Church and love each other. How does your stubborn and ignorant insistence that we deny a rightful title to a brother in Christ work for charity and ecumenical relations going forward? Don’t you wish that the Coptic Orthodox were part of the universal Church? Don’t you pray that we can be one? Then show respect to someone who is a valid bishop and a brave leader of our brothers and sisters in extreme crisis! When the Copts, so persecuted in their homeland, turn their gaze toward Catholic Christians, they expect to be afforded love and respect. So please give it to their leader, at the very least!

I hope and pray that your view represents only a small minority. I trust that Catholics worldwide are more open to respect and love that they are greeting this meeting between two Popes as a momentous occasion to be celebrated and embraced as yet another step toward Christian unity.

I don’t recall ever calling anyone names and I don’t believe I was disrespectful to anyone’s title. And I believe one of the first things I said was to pray for unity as Christ prayed for. And I do believe that if and when there is true unity, they will then recognize the Bishop of Rome, our Holy Father, the Roman Catholic Pope as the true Pope. That is not being disrespectful but truthful. There can not be unity unless there is TRUTH. Jesus is the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE. To water the TRUTH down doesn’t do anyone any good. There has been to much of that already! God Bless, Memaw

You’re making out the honorific title “pope” to be something more than it is. Pope simply means “father.” It is not the title “pope” that somehow sets apart the Bishop of Rome; rather, it is being Bishop of Rome and successor of St. Peter. The title “pope” is not now, nor has it ever been exclusive to the Bishop of Rome.

I think all “Roman” Catholics know who the Pope is, as does most everyone else, just ask them! I don’t know what the big fuss is all about. God Bless, Memaw

It seems to me that you’re the one making a big fuss by insisting that the title “pope” is somehow exclusive to the Pope of Rome, when it clearly is not. If you don’t believe me, then just ask the Pope of Rome-I’m quite sure he agrees with me.

I think Memaw is actually a Discordian Pope and has come to this thread in order to toss us the Golden Apple and get us all worked up over this. So I won’t be taking the bait any more - see ya!
