20 Truths about Mormons

There was a suggestion that the lds read the book of mormon during the year. I believe that this was last year. It was also encouraged to refect on its meaning. However, that was an one off. At this moment all are studying the new testament in sunday school and so Isaac is not correct in what he wrote. Also last year, the old testament was covered and the book of mormon was encouraged to read on a member’s own time.
Actually, I’ve been spending my sundays in Gospel Essentials, where the entire focus is ALWAYS on Mormon prophets and occasionally on Christ. I’ve been driving the missionaries around a lot too because I’m currently called as a ward missionary. I haven’t left the church. I’m just really questioning it right now. I’ve already stated that I’ve been through the temple recently. A lot of things really bother me, but it’s best to put it this way: It isn’t that I don’t believe in the church because I don’t like church practices; I don’t like church practices because I don’t believe in the church. That’s really what it all boils down to.

Why did you join it in the first place if you didn’t believe in it—or did you?

Gospel Essentials would focus on the restoration for the new members. And that would make sense. But as you know, the new testament is being discussed in sunday school. We need to be careful about generalizations. That being said, Isaac, I am not trying to reconvert you. I have just been to a catholic retreat and liked it. But my problem with the lds church is not its teachings. I just can’t seem to live the teachings. Since I was born catholic many of the ideas that I heard on the retreat where in my roots as a child. I can relate to it.

But the lds church has not been proven false. I have never had a testimony of church history. History is always imperfect. The mormon experience is certainly an interesting one. You still should go to www.mormonapologetics.org for some discussion. But as you know, people are people, and we are not perfect over there either. 🙂

Interesting. All I can say is that you never made the effort to gain a testimony of it; or it may be that your parents never taught you.

Thanks for judging me without really knowing me. You’re one of a large crowd.

This is probably not the case. People live life and life moves forward. And we also change. Also, we come across things along the way that causes us to adjust our thoughts and to make sense of what we came across. Many can doubt what they believed to be true at one time, especially when it comes to religion. Isaac is just going through his questioning phase. Unfortunately, he has read some antimormon sites to sure up his new understandings. But, what Isaac needs is understanding and not condemnation. He will search it all out and come up with his own interpretations.

And what ever those interpretations may be, hopefully, he will find understanding in his family. For Isaac, what will be important is that he doesn’t become an antimormon but rather a human being with a new understanding for his autobiography or an old understanding with a new twist.

Sorry if my post appeared judgemental. I didn’t think it was. I genuinely believe that if you make the right effort to gain a testimony of it, you would.

Thank you for your comments, but I would rather you let him speak for himself. I would prefer to hear his story from his own mouth rather than yours.

Actually, Zerinus, why me was quite accurate in his assessment of the situation.

Well, thank you; tell me more about it. His comments were quite general. They could be applicable to many people in many different situations. I like to know what are the specifics of your story.

Haha. I could write a freaking book. Where do you want me to start?

Well, since it is your story, you are the best person to decide where to begin; but if you want a tip, you can start by tell us how old you are, and when did you start having doubts about the Church, and how did it begin? You can also tell us something about your family background. Were your parents always active in the Church? Did they always observe the requirements of the Church, such a scripture study, family prayers, paying a full tithe, attending Church regularly, being active in the service of the Church, and so forth?

It does come across as very judgemental. You are assuming thngs about him even still in this very post. You have no idea what his testimony has been all along.
Not all folks sit on this high pinacle of mormonism you seem to sit on. Perhaps you ought to come down to a real level with the rest of us folks.

That is weird. I am trying to get answers from him, and now all of a sudden everybody has become his spokesman.

Haha. Yeah, it is a little weird. Maybe it’s because I’ve gained a certain amount of respect in this community? I don’t know, but maybe you should pay attention to what they’re saying because they seem to know more about my nature than you do. You seem to condemn me as a Mormon. They accept me as Catholics. I don’t really get it. I was always taught by my family that it was the other way around.

I am not his spokesman and wasn’t speaking about him as much as your own behavior which you seem to not want to take responsibility for.

Quite true, but anyway, I need to get back to my post in response to Zerinus’s questions. I don’t really see anyone answering those questions, so nobody can really qualify as my “spokesman,” except God, but I’m sure He has better things to do than spend time on an Internet forum so I don’t really expect He’ll be posting here. If He did, I doubt people would recognize it anyway.

Well, to start with, my Grandparents on my father’s side were not your “ideal” Mormons, but I have pioneer ancestry on that side of the family so a lot of stories have been passed down. Still, my grandfather struggled with alcoholicsm, but he was a good friend of W. Cleon Skousen, who I greatly admire. My grandmother was emotionally unstable throughout the majority of her life, but she’s tolerable enough now that she is older. They divorced shortly before my father’s mission, resulting in my grandfather’s death. My father did not go on a mission until he was 21 years old because he became the primary breadwinner of the family after his father’s death and his mother’s incapability of holding her life together.

My father served his mission in Nova Scotia, then returned and met my mother on a blind date. He said the Lord told him to marry her, but he thought, “Lord, she’s too short!” Eventually he gave in and she started running away because he was tall and she wanted to go on a mission. They got married (both 26 years old at the time) and my eldest sister was born a year later. Today, she serves a mission in Taiwan and will be returning in May of this year.

My other sister was born a year and a half later and just received her own mission call today, but isn’t opening it until this evening, when she’ll call us on the phone as she is away in college. I was born June 25th, 1987 and received a mission call a few months ago (though never really having a full testimony of the church) and have been called to Brazil along with everyone else I know of who received a mission call that week. I also have three younger siblings (all brothers) who look up to me to serve that mission.

My family has rarely missed church and we have always been active. I believe it would be safe to say the majority of us are convinced the church is true.

It is easy enough to say I was born questioning the church. I remember very few things from when I was young, but I remember that in “nursery” I was taught about Christ. I questioned whether he was real, so I decided to test out prayer and I received an answer in a rather miraculous way that I don’t feel comfortable posting on this board as there are unfortunately a lot of religious bigots on here. I try not to be one of them. I have spent the remaining 16+ years from that point attempting to receive an answer concerning the Book of Mormon and Mormonism, etc., but it’s always come back negative despite all the promises that it would be positive. I’ve questioned whether it is just myself answering in the negative because I really have always wanted to believe the Church is true. I’d much rather that be the case than have the hell I’ve been through, but regardless of my desires, the answers still stand as I originally receive them, though sometimes a new light is shed on them and I come to understand the answers better. I’ve already been through an explanation of how I define such spiritual answers, so I’d rather not go through that discussion again. Read through the thread.

Let’s see. I suppose that’s enough for you to disect however you like right now. Of course, you can go through and say “this affected you in this way” but since you don’t know the whole story it’s hard to honestly do that. For example, the fact that I do not believe in the church makes a lot more sense to the bishop than the fact I don’t believe in the ordinances, and I agree. It is because I do not believe in the church that the ordinances bother me - not the other way around.

I would likely have accepted the temple experience if I really had faith in the church before going. I wasn’t truly dishonest in getting into the temple. When asked whether I believed in this or that, I really looked into my heart and said, “Well, I do want to believe in it and I don’t really not accept it [at the time], so I suppose it’s okay to say I believe because I’m trying,” and that may have been a real mistake on my part if indeed the church is true because the temple experience destroyed my acceptance of the church and I pity those who accept it because I feel they have been fooled, though most of those doing the fooling are honest and sincere fools. It doesn’t make them bad people. In fact, the majority of them are very good. That’s not enough for me to accept the doctrine though. I can be good and even righteous perhaps, without accepting something my heart and mind tell me is false even though it teaches true principles.

I hope that answers some questions, but more than likely it brings up a million others. Such is life. 😃
