That’s an interesting bit of research.DavidFilmer,
re: “This eliminates the baggage of folks being frustrated by asking and not receiving responses to issues raised in early posts (because the new poster didn’t notice that the post he is quoting was made a year ago).”
There are 913 pages of topics going back to 2004. At least 850 of those pages have been inactive for the last 12 months.
I don’t know. CAF is based on a V-Bulletin system, which offers moderators the option to auto-expire (and lock) dormant threads after a specified interval of inactivity. I occasionally participate in other V-Bulletin systems in which this feature is enabled. If it is the desire of the moderator that those inactive topics on those pages not be responded to, why haven’t they been locked?
I suspect that our Moderator, Michael Francis, is an “old school” guy who remembers when usenet groups were typically first moderated by other posters. Offending members of the news list could be “BoZo’d” by list regulars, and would thus be ignored (and not even seen - news readers would ignore their posts). For almost three decades, this system worked fairly well. Maybe Michael Francis expects that this system could continue to work well on this Forum, and has not enabled some of the more strict rules of V-Bulletin.
Alas, usenet is rapidly fading into history, replaced by fancy vBulletin forums accessed through web browsers instead of newsreaders. While offering many advantages, such forums typically lack a Bozo filter. I daresay that, if modern forums offered a Bozo filter, some of our Forum participants would be routinely ignored. You would probably find yourself on several of these filters. You would certainly be on mine.
