My fiancee and I just ordered the four volumes of the LOTH. I think I just used all my spending money for the month.

My fiancee and I are going to beginning our prep for marriage!
(we’re cohabiting, long story with circumstances not in our control, our priest obv knows about it)
We have a dog and a rabbit, and as of last week a kitten that’s eating us out of house and home. Enough animals, I want to hurry up and get married so I can have some kids!

Catholic goal of 12 children

I have a question for this chat:

What is one thing you detest hearing about millennials?

I detest hearing that boomers complain about us job hopping and changing careers; they say it’s because we are lazy, we have commitment issues, we don’t value loyalty, we think the grass is always greener in the yard we can’t see.

Personally, as a millennial and a higher education professional I think the job-hopping/career changing culture is the result of an education system that has failed us. High school and middle school teachers are paid and evaluated based on “teaching to the test.” The model does not teach students to think for themselves or find their strengths. They simply memorize, regurgitate, repeat.

Not to mention the fact that schools teach Calculus and Spanish all day long instead of stuff we actually need for life. Students these days are graduating college without knowing how to balance a checkbook, change a tire, make a budget, or apply for a mortgage: the stuff that actually matters!

I’m a good example of a product of the system. Mind you, I went to private college-prep Catholic school K-12 (which is another topic I could debate all day long), so my experience was unique: surrounded by many upper-middle class high achievers with a lot of emphasis on getting into a good college. I still somehow managed to really start my career at age 27.

I started to write out the whole story of how I became an advisor after 10 years of career deliberation 🙂 Then I realized it is too long and convoluted. Feel free to DM me if you want to hear it!

one more thing on this topic: social media perpetuates the job-hopping culture. It promotes short attention spans and FOMO: fear of missing out. I suspect the FOMO could contribute to the “grass is greener” syndrome.

If the boomers think Millennials have short attention spans, just wait for Gen-Z 🤣 The I-Gen is the leader in short attention spans and are expected to have more career changes than the Gen-Xers had job titles.

Still though, it’s not like our generation is flawed because of social media; it’s part of the hand we’ve been dealt by our culture.

I detest hearing all millennials are socialist or communists. I have been “right leaning” since my first year of college and have gotten more conservative as I’ve gotten older.

I think anyone who argues against “job hopping”, whether they are a boomer or not, is just unaware of what private sector employment looks like today. In the private sector pensions have largely been replaced by 401k plans, and yearly raises and bonuses often lag behind what you could get by getting a better position at a new company.
Most companies recruit talent from outside the company for positions instead of promoting from within which encourages more frequent job changes.

With these conditions what benefit is it to the employee to stay loyal to one company for their entire career? Especially when said company would move to a lower tax state or move operations out of the country in a heartbeat if an upper management number cruncher tells the CEO it will make more money.

Millennial topic of the day…
My dog must stay on my property or be on a leash, if it harms someone or damages property, I would be liable. Cats should not be allowed to roam free to do whatever they want. Change my mind! 🤨

Can’t be part of this chat. I’m 32, so I haven’t lived a millennium.

Are there any millennials with kids? I don’t think anyone has mentioned they have kids.
Why you go to rub my loneliness and lack of children in? (I think that answers the question)!

I used to weigh a lot more. Umm, I am the tallest out of all my siblings.

@adamhovey1988 Hi Adam! Thank you for joining the chat thread!

I nominate you to ask an interesting question to get everyone chatting again. I don’t have two brain cells to rub together after this long week.

My buddy said he threw a stick five miles and his dog managed to find it and brought it back. Seems a little far fetched.

Since I hate to be called a millenial, can this be a thirty something chat?
