Then…🙂

you believe…

wait for it…
wait for it…

in absolute truth.

🙂

We all knew you did, anyway. Anyone who comes here and asserts something as true, in an effort to persuade others that their assertion is true, believes in absolute truth.

Otherwise, what you are doing is as inutile as going to a forum and arguing, “Turnips are the best vegetable!” Clearly, there is no absolute truth regarding what the “best vegetable” is.

But when you come to a forum and assert: “We live in a world of contingent truths”, we all know it’s because you believe it for yourself, as well as think others should believe this too* (if they want to be consonant with reality).

*It is understood that, of course, all mentally mature people have the free will to choose to believe or not—but what I am asserting is that you believe something to be true, and you know that anyone who wants to conform beliefs to truth should believe what you assert as well. So please don’t come back with, “You can believe what you want to believe”. Of course we can. That’s a given in our world of free will.

What is an absolute language?
A language in which an absolute truth can be absolutely written. Since absolute truth does not depend on time – an absolute truth is true for all time – then the language cannot be one which changes with time. Since all human languages change with time, then it will have to be a non-human language.

I wish you luck in your search.

No. There is very little point in my posting here if you do not read what I post. Have a look at my post #125 in this thread:
No. I have been asserting some non-absolute truths here.

If you want absolute truths then please indicate an absolute source of absolute truths, together with an absolute proof that your claimed source is actually a true source of absolute truths.

In the absence of such a source then we will all have to make do with contingent truths that work here-and-now. For the moment I do not need to worry about whether those truths will still work in 1,000,000,000 years time. Here-and-now is good enough for the moment.

What, you’ve never heard of Latin?

🙂 heh. But seriously, I think such a language may exist. (In Lewis’ Space Trilogy there was “Old Solar”.)

In Christian belief, your definition of “absolute language” might be the Word of God since He has always been and will be and His truth does not change. 👍

Thank you for your best wishes in my search of God’s truth. As we Christians say, it’s a life long search and we believe we will find Him one day. God bless you.

This is absurd.

Friendships with religious discussions are entirely possible.
Wow! Why not say the same thing without the sarcasm.

It would look more like this:

“Friendships with religious discussions are entirely possible”. Otherwise, you are making my point for me.

Your friend makes a very valid point about the psychology of belief.
Is it as strong as this:

There have been 1,000,000 Non-Catholic Religions so far but only yours is correct. The others are silly made up nonsense, but yours, yours got it right.

(I know you could respond “Atheism (resp. Agnosticism) isn’t a religion”, but just allow me to define “religion” to include them – or, if you absolutely won’t do that, then simply take out the word “religions” and put in “religious belief systems”.

Also you might ask “1,000,000?” To that I answer that, since we’re writing numbers in base-ten it seemed fitting to use 10^n for some positive integer n. I don’t think 1,000,000 is a bad estimate, given that Protestant denominations alone account for 30,000 non-Catholic religions.)

If you study any of the many books on the psychology and history of religious belief (there’s a great book by Steven Pinker that comes to mind but I can’t recall the title)…you will grok more of what he is saying here, which IMO is:

People in the past were just as certain of and committed to their god then as people are with their gods today.
As our societies learned more about science, psychology, biology, the environment…we left most of those gods behind.

So what your friend is saying with his post is; there is a decent chance the same will happen with the gods of this era, as well.

And who knows…there may be new gods to come into play in the coming centuries. If so, people might look back on the Abrahamic religions today in the same way we look back and think about the various gods of 2000 years ago that we do not take seriously anymore.

.
If “gods” are just made up creations by man, yes, they will come and go with the whim of society. That’s why they’re gods (small g). Not the One God Who created the Universe, space and time (and us.) He is forever.

Ah yes, psychology. It has it’s points. But how many of them get you in then try to push some kind legal of mind altering drug on them? The most famous was Freud, I think, who did his share of drugs while probing the mind. I can argue some do need them. But I could argue the human race are guinea pigs for the next great mind altering drug that we know little about. Lobbyists prolly know best. I’m telling you all it is another part of Satan’s grand scheme and 99% of us think nothing of it. Don’t worry bout what’s going on, take a pill. Life is good. Really! Life is crapola compared to what we have in store. On the flip side, this is heaven if you don’t believe in heaven. Good luck with that cuz hell is coming to earth.

You certainly could say language is getting filthier.

There are only 3 gods.

1: the pagan “gods”. These are really just men/women that have been raised to divinity. Some pagan writers have even admitted that gods like Odin and Thor were really just old and very powerful men that later came to be revered as gods. From a theological perspective, these really aren’t worth considering.

2: The pantheist God of the Hindus, Brahmins, Gnostics.

3: The Creator God of the Christians, Muslims, Jews.

These are the only 3 really distinct conceptions of God, and the first 1 isn’t even worth considering, so properly there are only 2: pantheist or theist. The question between them is: is God identified with the world, or is he separate from it? Is the divine essence/substance mixed with other beings (pantheism), or is it separate (theism)?

Once you start to think seriously you eventually have to admit the existence of a supreme, uncaused, eternal, and perfect being in which to ground all being, truth, goodness, beauty, etc., i.e., if you think seriously, you eventually have to admit that there is an Almighty God. It’s just whether or not you are 2. or 3.

Vishnu sent Krishna to be Arjuna’s charioteer. Allah sent Mohammed to be His Prophet. Mithras sent himself to die and rise again. Durga slew the demon Mahishasura. Athene helped the Greeks conquer Troy.

There are stories about all the various gods.

Allah is a dead prophet, Did Mithras rise from the dead ? Durga ?
