i agree…

and if all else fails maybe people should go to the words of Jesus… who said that the way is narrow and there are FEW who find it… the saints also speak of not many making it… but i can’t recall which saints said waht…

Also, i heard this same thing about 5 in 33,000 but i heard it was St Leonard who… related this story…
Since no one can figure out who actually said it, I am going to chalk it up as just a story. At any rate it would fall under “private revelation.” So I will discard this as just a story to scare people. Not to downplay sin, because all sin is serious.

A wise decision. There are too many “special” people telling us that we’re all going to hell.

I Just heard the following story:

An arch Deacon known to Saint Vincent Ferrer died at the same hour as saint Bernard. The Deacon appeared to Ferrer after dying, saying the following: at the hour I died, 33,000 others also died. Those that went straight to heaven were 2: Myself and saint Bernard. Those that went to purgatory numbered 3, and the rest went to hell. So 5 out of 33,000 were saved. Just imagine if this is the ratio of people saved to people damned. Damn!!!

· Hail Mary full of grace the Lord is with thee…….

Here’s a link to a website where you can download some excellent, thought provoking free talks on the faith. The talks are by a priest and apologist. Very inspiring, and interesting talks by a man who is very knowledgable on the faith. . Downlaod them, and give em to your friends. The talk that contains the above story is season 6 episode 13: “total war”

Hope this helps
Wow! That means between you and me only three others have a chance

I think it is important that we are never too self assured that we we are definitely going to heaven because this is dangerous. It says in the Bible to “Work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” We can all get to heaven, but it requires us to die in a state of grace, having repented of all mortal sin. Many Catholics today never go to Confession and do not even believe in the need for Confession to a priest. Also, many people have lost the sense of sin and think that all “good people” will go to heaven, and many people do not even believe that hell exists, so it is a safe bet that people who don’t believe that hell exists will not be too worried about going there, and will probably not do the things they need to do to avoid going there. That said, we should have faith and confidence in God’s love and mercy if we are sorry for our sins and confess them. I have a booklet which you might be interested in reading called The Father Speaks to His Children which contains the only private revelation made personally by God the Father and recognized as authentic by the Church after ten years of investigation. In this booklet, God talks about his incredible love for us.

I quote from the book: “Men believe Me to be a terrifying God Who is going to cast all mankind into hell. What a great surprise it will be when, at the end of time, they see so many souls they believed lost, enjoying eternal bliss among the elect!”

The book also contains this story (remember this is God the Father speaking): "I will give you an example of a soul who is facing sudden death; this soul has always been for me like the Prodigal Son. I lavished benefits on this soul, but he wasted all these benefits, all these gifts that his most loving Father provided for him. More than this, he offended me gravely. I waited for him, I followed him everywhere, I gave him more favours: health and wealth, that I caused to result from his work, to the point of superfluity. At times My providence granted him further gifts. He therefore had plenty of everything but he saw it all in the sad light of his vices, and his whole life was a fabric of errors because of habitual mortal sin. But My love never tired. I followed him all the same. I loved him and, most of all, in spite of his rebuffs, I was happy to live patiently close to him, in the hope that maybe one day he would respond to My love and return to Me, His Father and Savior. At last his final day is approaching: I have sent him an illness in order to make him come to his senses and return to Me, his Father. Time passes and My poor son - he is 74 - is at his last hour. I am still there, as always: I talk to him with even more kindness than usual. I persevere, I call My chosen ones and ask them to pray for him, so that he may ask for the forgiveness I am offering him…And now, before breathing his last, he opens his eyes, admits his errors and understands how far he has strayed from the true path that leads to Me. He recovers his senses and in a weak voice, which none of those around him can hear, he says: “My God, I can now see how great Your love for me has been and I have offended You continually with such a bad life. I never thought about You, my Father and Saviour. Now You see everything and I beg forgiveness for all this evil which You see in me and which I now discern in my confusion. I love you, my Father and my Saviour! He died at that very moment and now here he is, before Me. I judge him with a paternal love: He called me Father and he is saved. He will spend a period of time in the place of expiation, and after this he will be happy for all eternity.”

I ordered a bunch of these booklets from Mary’s Call (their website is www.maryscall.com ) and you can order them for a donation. The person I spoke to who works there said they are not allowed to sell them but are supposed to give them away for donations (I think he said this was by order of the Vatican, because this is a revelation that is approved by the Church and this way the message can be spread to as many people as possible.)

Howdy my friend! 🙂

There is something wrong with the link.
Yes, I see. Sorry about that. To get the information try Googling “The Little Number of Those Who Are Saved” homily by St. Leonard of Port Maurice. Hopefully you can get access to the homily that talks about the 5 out of 33,000 who were saved. Peace!

Dear cathdoki,

I just noticed that sombody has provided the link you are interested in in one of the above posts. God bless!🙂

Thanks to those who responded to my question.🙂

I worry about my family’s souls (and of course, mine!) I found the St. Bridget prayer over a year ago and have been faithfully reciting it everyday. It has several promises but 2 of them really jumped out at me:
  1. The soul who prays them can chose 3 others whom Jesus will then keep in a state of grace sufficient to become holy.
  2. No-one in the four successive generations of the soul who prays them will be lost.
This is the first prayer that I have come across that actually has promises regarding someone other than the one praying them.

I have read this before. No disrespect intended to the original post-er, but it is precisely stuff like this that has caused me sleepless nights. I lost my faith in God for several years, and before anyone can tell me I was silly to lose my faith for such stories as these, it happened over a period of time. I could not fathom having a dear relationship with Someone Who was so difficult to please that most people went to hell.

My Dad died and I worried about his soul, (and prayed of course) because well he was just downright ornery and difficult to live with for my years a s a kid. I prayed to God that he might be with Him, because i KNOW my dad was ill with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and he managed his illness by being a jerk with my brother and me. But that is life, and I believe our forgiveness is a prayer…but i digress.
Forgive me if i seem a little upset. I get upset with religion sometimes. Fearing God is all fine and dandy, but some of us don’t get PAST the fear, because we have bad relationships with our OWN natural fathers. to be TRUTHFUL, I would definitely be one the people going to hell, because unlike most of the saints who said they were sinners, I am really not as good as they were. sometimes I just want to give up on God and religion because it seems so much easier to just be bad, since i am never good–or will never be good enough to be one of the “5 of the 33,000 saved” To put it bluntly—the odds are stacked against me, huh? I am a problem drinker and ornery as heck myself about various problems, i manage with a sense of humor—and do smile. but God seems very very unsympathetic when stories like this circulate.

edit I do want to add: I practice my religion: go to confession and go to mass. But I do it without feeling very close to God—and not because I don’t want to. I actually feel guilty for being so untrusting of God, but AT LEAST ( and that doesn’t mean i don’t believe I have to work for a better relationship with God) but AT LEAST i have my faith back. I had NOTHING in my heart but dispelief jus two years ago. Faith is a gift, and the fact that I even WORRY about God is a blessing, because i know He is there.

Since no one can figure out who actually said it, I am going to chalk it up as just a story. At any rate it would fall under “private revelation.” So I will discard this as just a story to scare people. Not to downplay sin, because all sin is serious.
As some have mentioned, it was St Leonard of Port Maurice who related the story of St Vincent Ferrer in a sermon. It was Ferrer who had the apparition of the dead guy , the dead guy saying that all people who die in the same hour, are judged at the same time. (the dead gut was a holy Arch Deacon.)

Yes it is a story that scares people. But hopefully with a holy fear that leads to repentence, not to excessive anxiety, depression or dispair.

that would be a mistake… because it was SAINTS who relayed the story. If non-saints got it all mixed up, got the name of the saint wrong… that is not the fault of the saint…

and i think that, even if were somehow proven to be just a “story”… we should keep these sobering figures in mind to keep us on our toes… sometimes Christians get very complacent… thinking they are already holy enough for Heaven or darn near to it… whne in fact… Who knows… they could have one step already in Hell… or at least the lowest depths of Purg… and let’s not forget that Purg is basically HELL… (“excurciating”) that comes to an end eventually… and that the avg stay there is 40 years!!! That’s the avg… some stay LONGER… I can’ even endure “excrutiating” for one freaking minute…

some saint said that waiting til Purg to do your… purgation… is like paying a million dollars for something you coul have gotten for a penny…

so offer up your sufferings in atonement for past sins… and pray lots of rosaries… and give $$ to the poor…

We are not bound to hold any private revelation as an article of faith. The saints are not infallible. Also your understanding of Purgatory is not consistent with Church teaching. Purgatory is defined as a process more than a place. It is a place pf purification, not punishment. Also, being outside of time, it is impossible to speculate “how long” the process takes.

You guys think maybe these statistics say less about how hard it is to get into heaven then they point more towards how few people listen to God’s mission and stray from the gospel? It may have been 5 out of 33,000 that time, not 5 out of 33,000 all the time. As if only 5 people are allowed to get into heaven a time. This is private revelation and needs not be listened to if it causes us to become anxious and makes us view God as anything but loving. Of course, that will depend on the person.

Not saying it’s a piece of cake to get into heaven, but it certainly isn’t impossible. We have to learn most of all to trust in God’s Mercy. That way, even if only 5 out of 33,000 get into heaven at a time (like the line from an exclusive club or something:rolleyes:) we can hope that we are one of the 5.

Here’s my favorite St. Brigid prayer:

I would like the angels of Heaven to be among us.
I would like an abundance of peace.
I would like full vessels of charity.
I would like rich treasures of mercy.
I would like cheerfulness to preside over all.
I would like Jesus to be present.
I would like the three Marys of illustrious renown to be with us.
I would like the friends of Heaven to be gathered around us from all parts.
I would like myself to be a rent payer to the Lord; that I should suffer distress, that he would bestow a good blessing upon me.
I** would like a great lake of beer for the King of Kings**.
**I would like to be watching Heaven’s family drinking it through all eternity.
**

I think this prayer shows a better attitude than looking at God as a “cosmic cop” which was the theology I grew up with. If we don’t make it to heaven or at least purgatory that was really OUR choice by our response to HIM. Yes we should always want to do more for God’s honor and glory but, even recieve more and give more of God’s grace and love in our lives.Only 5 out of 33,000 really sounds like some protestant churches odds of getting to heaven. Sinners in the hand of an angry God and all that.
There’s a quote I used to use in RCIA to show the difference between the Catholic view of the world and the Protestant one
]
The Catholic world is a heathier clime
Filled with food and fellowship
And good red winw
At least I’ve always found it so

If so many try, and so few are saved, what’s the point? This is all silly. Private revelation is just that! PRIVATE! And often WRONG.

I’ve finally come to the conclusion it’s time to leave this silly forum.

Please don’t. 😦
