65 Girls At Area School Pregnant

School To Unveil Three-Prong Program

POSTED: 12:30 pm EDT August 23, 2005

**CANTON, Ohio – **There are 490 female students at Timken High School, and 65 are pregnant, according to a recent report in the Canton Repository.

The article reported that some would say that movies, TV, videogames, lazy parents and lax discipline may all be to blame.

School officials are not sure what has caused so many pregnancies, but in response to them, the school is launching a three-prong educational program to address pregnancy, prevention and parenting.

The newspaper also reported that students will face mounting tensions created by unplanned child-rearing responsibilities, causing students to quit school and plan for a GED. This will make it difficult for the Canton City School District to shake its academic watch designation by the state.

According to the Canton Health Department, statistics through July show that 104 of the 586 babies born to Canton residents in Aultman Hospital and Mercy Medical Center had mothers between 11 and 19.

The newspaper reports that the non-Canton rate was 7 percent. Canton was 15 percent.

I sure hope that part of that three pronged approach includes abstinance information. I hope they help them to understand the reasons behind waiting until a person is married to become involved in sexual activities. Unfortunately, too often this gets overlooked in our secular society.

I would venture a guess that I know what caused every single one of those pregnancies. Maybe there is money to be made as a consultant to this school district.

As people used to say to Catholics with large families, “Haven’t you figured out what causes that?”

Yeah, it is kinda obvious what is causing the pregnancies…
A better question might be if the powers that be at this school have figured out yet what is causing them to keep their jobs…cause they don’t seem to doing much, if this is the result…

:rotfl: Ya think!

Good point, this school is a show of the society.

Ah…if school officals don’t know what causes pregnancy no wonder they’re suprised so many girls are pregnant. Maybe these officals believe the stork delivers babies, perhaps?

What bother’s me even more is why do we care what school officials think about this? It’s not their job to raise our children and monitor their behavior outside of school hours. This is a parenting issue, IMO.

It isn’t a school’s job to keep teenage girls from getting pregnant.

It shouldn’t need to be a school’s job, but obviously the parents of Canton Ohio are not getting the job done.

I’m sure most of the conceptions happened off school property and not during school hours!!! Where are the parents? Why does everybody jump on schools for all of society’s ills.

I agree that the school should implement major sex ed. programs, but right now these are very controversial, and many parents don’t agree what should be taught. This puts the school between a rock and a hard place.

You know what’s interesting?

I really doubt that the district was into teaching absence. If the district was, you just know that it would have been right in the title of the news report saying how it is failing.

There had to be some sex ed teaching or the news would have said “see sex ed should be taught”.

:hmmm: Maybe since nothing was mentioned it was the other sex ed (condoms, masturbation, & homosexual) teaching that failed.

What! You mean Planned Parenthood “sex ed patrol” is not on the scene! Trying to figure out “what happened”…well, maybe try teaching absence.

Sounds like some parents need some britches fired up. I just wonder…how many abortions in Canton area, if there are this many pregnancies… Abortions just may be higher! Sad.

OK Catholic folks, we need to see the one good thing in all this. The girls aren’t aborting aparently. That is progress. One message is getting accross: a fetus is a real baby. I pray that many of the girls will consider adoption so that their babies have two parents.

Maybe all the attention to The Right to Life is coming accross in our sorry nation. I agree abstinance also needs to be taught.

Fitz,

You took the words right out of my mouth. I’d been thinking about this thread, in the back of my mind, over the past several days, and I couldn’t help but wonder:

Are more girls keeping their babies when they find that they’re pregnant? Could this be the result of some excellent progress regarding the sanctity of life? If so, well at least Hooray for that much! These are little souls, soon to be born. Let’s pray that each one is loved and cared for in the home in which they are raised.

The other concern of course is, what is the abortion rate in the area? If it has gone down and this is what we are seeing, good news and more simply needs to be done to teach these teens the sanctity of the marital act.

If the abortion rate has gone up even as the pregnancy rate continues to climb, than it would appear that this community is in dire need of some education regarding what the body is and how it needs to be respected. I hope the local Parish is working triple time to address this as an immediate concern for their community, regardless of how many of these girls, if any attend Mass there.

It really seems to me that this ties right into the whole Church scandal, in that we need to better catechise people as to the truths taught regarding human sexuality. If we helped to educate people, starting as children in an age appropriate manner, as to the beauty of our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit and all that entails, we could change a culture.

Even if that were true, rather than gross generalization: So what?

I am a school teacher. If a parent wants their child taught to not get pregnant, that parent needs to look someone else other than my classroom.

For my part, I’ll ensure my children receive the proper education in such matters.

I think more girls might be keeping their babies. On Right to Life Sunday they passed out holy cards with prayers. I pray every day for 4 babies, and I have named them Molly, Hope, Michael, and Matthew. I pray that those involved in making the desicions with the birth mom have their hearts changed from encouraging abortion to having the baby. All I could think about is that article might mean our prayers are working.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to learn that your prayers have indeed been answered! 🙂

It would be great if we could make equally vast inroads into the lie of teenage, young adult sexual activity outside of marriage. It will take a lot of prayer to turn around our culture.

Oh, I just had the most wonderful image of you meeting Molly, Hope, Michael and Matthew in heaven, where they thanked you for your prayers over the years.

The little prayer card says that we might meet in heaven. I really never prayed so specifically for abortion before. I am glad they gave me the card, and the prayers are more meaningful. I keep the card in the visor of my car. I drive every day somewhere and it reminds me.

I also thought when I read the article posted on this thread that if we begin the abstinence teaching then we will see improvement over time. It won’t happen overnight. Nothing does change that fast. However, we can keep up our prayers.
