In the book of revelations it says that if you work out the numbers 666 you will find out the identity of the man that bares the mark.

“Let the one with understanding reckon the meaning of the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. His number is 666.”

Has anyone worked it out yet?

"When you actually look at the original text, you’ll see that in this passage, the letters of 666 are actually written in Hebrew, which places a higher significance on numbers meaning words and words meaning numbers than ancient Greek. The writer was very clearly trying to tell us something.

And sure enough, if you translate the Hebrew spelling of 666, you actually spell out Neron Kesar - the Hebrew spelling of Nero Caesar."

Could it be that revelations was written as an attack on Caeser?

I am reading notes from a Dr. Brant Pitre talk called the Bible and the End Times. He also references Michael Barber’s book Coming Soon. The Greek form of ‘Nero Caeser’ translated into Hebrew is 666.

Thanks for the reply. i’m going too look into those books. So what is your take on what revelation is trying to achieve. Is it a prophecy of real world events yet to come? Has some of those events already come to pass since 666 refers to Nero?

The only book I read on Revelations was Scott Hahn’s The Lamb’s Supper. He goes into that stuff a little at the end of the book but mostly talks about how we find the Mass in Revelation. I think it might be both/and like much in Catholicism. Just as in Jesus’ Olivet Discourse in Matthew 24/25. Jesus is speaking of two distinct events…the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem but also the end of the world. This is why we need to read Scripture through the Catholic Church or else we get things like the left behind stuff.

It is really an abuse of Canon and Sacred Scripture to use any part of it as a code for fortune telling/ fortelling/predicting the future

I think it is Islam.

I saw sermon by an ex-muslim. He was shocked when he saw the 666 written in the original. He said it looked just like the shahada. The shahada is the Islamic statement of faith. It is what is written on Islamic flags. We also see Islamic fighters (not just ISIS, but also Hamas etc.) who wear it tied around their foreheads.

The more I read about it, the more it fits.

For me I like to think 666 being the mark of the beast that is the anti Christ is anyone who refuses to believe in Jesus the Christ, not some boogie man who is to come.

The evidence is overwhelming that the mark is Islamic for several reasons. One reason is the zebiba, the other is the number of verses there are in the Koran according to Islamic scholars.

The fact is that the book of Revelation was written in response to very specific events in history that occurred, the destruction of the temple and the exile of many Christians and Jews from the city of Jerusalem. But, also, as the saying goes, “there is nothing new under the sun”. Future generations have continually found both comfort and hope from the Apocalypse, but also have searched to attach meanings to symbolic things. I think it’s okay to look for general patterns in these books, but to attach specific characteristics to specific people or even groups of people (i.e. saying 666 represents a specific current or future person or religion) isn’t very productive.

I once thought I saw the person who had the 666 mark on him, but it turned out to be a 999 mark 🙂

I think there will be a specific man, the ‘man of sin’ who can be called the Antichrist. At the same time it’s in Scripture: “even now there are many antichrists”. 1 John 2: 18.
As happens many times in Scriptural prophecy, the same passage means more than one thing.

Sometimes we do get things upside down. 😃

Zaccheus, yes there might be a specific person, but I also think there are many anti Christs throughout history who come and do evil.

Mike fro NJ true sometimes we do get things upside down. When the anti christ comes he will go about it a way that it will be hard to know him as he will have that sweet tongue convincing those who fall for his lies that are seemingly sound like truth.
