79 Year Old Nun convicted of sexual abuse

The following article was printed in the New York Times on November 13, 2007. This is an especially troubling and sad story since Sister Gianini has pleaded no contest to two charges of sexual abuse and now faces 20 years in prison. I certainly hope and pray that there will not be a “perp walk” for the media when Sister Gianini is sentenced in February.

I do not understand how bringing up something that happened 40+ years ago (which is still just as wrong now as it was then) will solve anything. Pray for the nun, pray for the men, pray for all who are sexually abused- especially by those sexually abused by clergy and religious- and especially for the clergy and religious who abuse.
 
This seems to have taken place in the 1960’s. This was when the sexual revolution. Going to street clothing ,so nuns were not as highly visible as they once were, was at it height then also.
 
In most of the cases the statute of limitations has prevented prosecution after ten years or so. They extended the statute for civilcases but were unable to do so for criminal cases. Is the statute different in this case?

If it’s my child…there are no limitations. I thought there was a statute of limitations though, legally??🤷 That’s a sad story, though…I just read it. 😦 I would be so horrified if this happened to my kids…by lay or religious–it’s got to be a horrible thing for these men to have grown up with, and they probably felt embarrassed to come forward, one might guess?

I also feel compassion for the nun too. To go to jail at 79? That’s a pretty miserable place to spend your dying days. It’s a tragic story anyway you slice it.

And the NY TIMES gets another jab at the Catholic faith…oh joy.:rolleyes:

I don’t get your point. Are you saying that the sixties culture somehow caused this horrible incident? I don’t buy it. It is too reductionist. The cause of the sister’s behavior is for God, her confessor and perhaps a psychologist or other expert to determine. Such abuse, as I hope the Church now understands, is deep seated and complex in its origins. The sixties produced much that was regretable but I don’t see it in this case.
 
my husband says the only good thing that came out of the 60’s was me 😃

In Wisconsin the statute of limitations for indecent behavior with a child is six years. But state law requires that the offender live within the state as those six years pass, and apparently Sr. Gianni moved. chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-nun-abuse_webnov13,0,2375617.story?coll=

Somewhere in the story it mentioned that she was wearing a habit.

IMHO the mind set of the “sexual revolution” 60’s set the stage of this and many other sexual abuse situations. We reap what we sow and what we sows was not a very good crop.

People were “up tight” I believe the term was in the period prior to the “revolution” and thus they repressed their desires for fear of being caught and the condemnation of others. (a few did not care of this I will agree).

But the sex abuse epidemic (I consider it an epidemic) came into vogue when sex became recreational and not sacramental. Society has made it “clear” that sexual behaviors are not something “we” can control. So why would anyone be surprised when someone acts on these “uncontrollable” instincts?

Bunk!!! we are all able to control what it is that we find important (even if you don’t believe in GOD).

I never siad she did not wear one. I said that nuns changed into street clothing. Some did some did not change, but the mind set was changing.
 
Doesn’t this prove once again that woman are equal to men? Have the feminists won another skirmish? Have they proven that women are of worth because women, even religious women, can be just as vile as any man?

A rather pyrrhic victory if you ask me.:whistle:

All you have to do is read the secular news and the turn on the TV and we can see how EQUAL women have become.🤷 Sadly this is sometimes even harder to explain to our children the the violence going on in the cities.

It’s called a penitentiary for a reason. In more ancient times, if a religious or priest did something like this (and they did), they were sent to a monastery where they were kept in a cell and treated like a prisoner so they could do penance for their crime the rest of their life. That’s what prison should be treated as–a place to do penance.
 
A horrific story on all accounts. How could a nun do this? I know women are abusers sometimes, but it’s supposed to be rare. I mean, we were told to teach our kids if they get lost to approach a woman or a mom with kids for help, because the chances are better that a woman won’t be a predator. A nun?! Gosh I’m so thankful for the wonderful nuns who taught my friends & I…

It did use to be rare. But notice the number of news items lately about women teachers using younger male students for sex.

That’s really true, JimG, good point. This is an evil that is becoming all to common & infiltrating every walk of life, from public school teachers, to rabbis & ER doctors…

The cover is: “We are worthwhile because we can act like men in all things.” I’d read Pope John Paul’s “The Theology of the Body” who develops the Biblical and Traditional, i.e., Catholic (True), reality about God’s intentions for men and women. Women nuns in the BC Church have limited themselves to damaging our liturgy. But many nuns have made the option repulsive to orthodox women because of their insistence upon the sanctification of secular feminism. “Sanctify” and “Feminism” do not go together of course, but there you have it.
