8 dead in Texas high school shooting

We need to seriously consider the fact that even sane people can get angry and want to carry out what they see as justice. As in all these cases, the shooter had some reason in his mind for doing what he did, but he did not forgive.

To the degree we as members of society do not promote forgiveness, we are all responsible for these shootings. Elements of media and society have created a state of vitriol, or at the very least a state where resentment is not addressed in the ways of the Gospel, which is to forgive.

If we are going to start doing something in schools, let’s start by promoting forgiveness in the curriculum. No need to hire anyone or buy guns. We simply need to turn society around by teaching people how to forgive. We need to recognize when people are resentful, and talk about forgiveness.
 
This kind of reminds me of the “Likes don’t Help!” campaign that Publicis Singapore did.

One or two guards in each school, with benefits would costs, say 100k/yr, per school; there are also 100k public schools in the US. That is not a minimal cost.

Should be three well trained and armed guards at every school. The cost is not minimal, but it is a whole lot less than the one trillion dollars spent on supposedly providing safety to people in Iraq and Afghanistan. Why are they more important than American school children?
 
I doubt most conservatives or progressives would disagree, but that isn’t to say the solutions they promote in a vacuum would help either. Is proposing something that is ineffectual or illegal better at helping than a “like?”

Until we know the details (and share if it has been reported) of this case, talking about mental health, gun laws, etc is just noise. We know Nikolas Cruz had been flagged numerous times and nothing was done. He was even ordered to report to the “Promise” program and didn’t show. Does that mean we need the legislation was lacking in this case, or the enforcement of the legislation?

 
How sad that that so many take such glee in using bodies of dead children as a platform to stand on to point fingers at the NRA.

The anti-gun lobby is hardly alone in that, and the NRA’s behavior of late has been so insensitive that it’s almost like it wants force Congress to begin work on the kind of solution the NRA is so opposed to. Frankly, the best thing the NRA could do right now is just shut up. Too many more of these, and you may very well see the 2nd Amendment’s days numbered. There’s a point when defense of a principle becomes so hamfisted and awkward, and well just plain incompetent that it begins to be an argument against that principle.

When people call you terrorists, when you aren’t, letting that stand creates it’s own public relations problems. Considering the big increase in NRA membership is experiencing, they seem to be playing the PR game fairly well.

No I don’t. I only know about the budgets in my part of the country. And while this is not a particularly wealthy part of the country, the schools are exceedingly well funded. I have seen a number of their budgets.
 
This kid also had explosives, or so I read in one article. It’s a shame he had access to a gun, but it might have been more deadly if he didn’t.

Nope, and it won’t happen any time soon. But as even you note, the NRA is becoming a bogeyman (deserved or not) and at some point, if it can’t find messaging that isn’t basically designed for its own membership (the echo chamber effect), it’s going to find itself in some trouble. Even now, you can see some politicians starting to get a bit nervous about the traditionally safe close relationship they once had. Big Tobacco once wielded pretty substantial influence, so even deeply entrenched organizations can find themselves steadily being pushed to the back of the room, and even out the door.

Israel can have its laws and the US can have ours. The US was truly a unique country at one time with a different outlook on government. Regardless of whether one trusts the state or not it shouldn’t be trusted as has been proven time and time again.
 
You do understand that these latest perps brought homemade bombs to school also? Just as in Columbine they were wearing trench coats in Dallas of all places.Why didn’t that raise a red flag?
Point is where there’s a will there’s a way.They had a shotgun and a revolver,no semi automatics.
 
How do you account for the fact that that wasn’t the outcome in any other country that took a stand against gun massacres by imposing restrictions? That argument is dead by 20 odd years of world wide empirical evidence.
