There are already more guns in America or close to it than people.
 
My point was,the hysteria over semi automatics,etc.Seems that type of firearm didn’t factor into this latest massacre.So,what’s next,restricting all firearms? Fine with me but only if I can be guaranteed that no one will possess a firearm of any type.Namely those with bad intentions. Think that can ever be accomplished? I don’t think so.

If there is gun control that can effectively prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands, I am all for it.

However aren’t there already laws in place that aim to do just that? If these laws aren’t effective or poorly enforced what makes people think more laws are in order?

Also countries in Western Europe and the more developed Asian countries such as Singapore, Japan and Korea don’t seem to have the gun violence like we do here. Why is that?

How dare you accuse anyone of “glee” over this. Mourning over children dead because of our gun culture is heart-rending, not an occasion of joy. And yes, I will see blood on the hands of all who continue to support putting guns in the hands of minors and the mentally ill. I will not be intimidated into silence by this sort of false claim that I am using “dead children.”

We are failing miserable to protect children. All solutions are shot down for no better reason that that no solution is absolute. So we do nothing. We do not invest in mental health. We do not enact any new legislation to limit availability of firearms to those who should not have them. We do not sufficiently secure the schools. Our system of lobbyist and partisan politics continue to run up the death toll. Hopefully one day Texas will tire of be the leader in death and guns, and the one last on mental health car.

Then why not fight to enforce the condition for owning a firearm be appropriate for what it is? It should be those wanting to protect gun rights who lead this goal. The Swiss with their high rate of gun ownership require every male over 18 to have military grade training which not only promotes respect for the gun and its horrible potential… but screens people unsuitable for gun ownership. I read a statistic today that 3 times more children have been killed in their schools this year to date than US military in any part of the globe. The only reason I can think of for not putting US schools under the protection of the US military is the attitude that children are acceptable collateral to protect gun culture. So many horrendous statistics there year after year concerning the deadly nature of US schools and yet an unbelievable resistance to addressing it with basic common sense?
 
That’s all good and well,yet in this scenario,the perp brought guns from home belonging to his Dad.
How can this be avoided? It can’t. Again,it’s not the guns that are the issue it the soul sickness of these individuals.
 
Singapore, Japan and South Korea have very restrictive gun ownership laws. They do not permit guns for self defense and have very strict rules for keeping guns locked up in the home. In Japan gun licenscing is conducted by the police. They are issued for 3 year periods and on re-application you must do a refresher course and pass a practical test. Having law enforcement at the forefront of this process ensures that any crimes committed since the last license can be factored into the preocess. South Korea have the lowest number of guns per capita that any developed country. Singapore imposes the death penalty for gun ownership abuse.

To date, there have been 14 school shootings since January 1, with 30 dead and 35 wounded. It’s all stats though until it hits home.

You didn’t mention Mexico, which is a lot closer to the U.S. in culture than is are those Asian nations. Mexico has much stricter gun laws than the U.S. and a much higher murder rate.
 
These crazy people don’t just come up with it out of nowhere. They see it on TV and they see the notoriety the perps get. The “moment of fame” for someone who otherwise is a nonentity. Consider what you think is important, but one thing we sure ought to be considering is for the media not to make a feeding frenzy out of it every time this kind of thing happens. They just wallow in it, and for days at a time.
 
In Japan for instance, the application for a gun license (which is valid for 3 years at a time) involves police visits to the home to inspect the gun security measures. Regulations stipulate that a gun locker “must be affixed to the wall and have three locks on the outside and a metal chain on the inside to run through the trigger guard” Ammunition to be “kept in a separate, locked safe, per regulations, and you will probably keep the bolt in yet another safe. This last step is just a recommended one, to make sure the gun is fully disabled, but almost all Japanese gun owners comply.”

Failure in these conditions results in fines and revoking of the license.
 
Western Europe and Canada are a lot closer culturally to the US than Mexico and they have strict gun control laws, yet unlike Mexico, do not have gun violence on our level.

Singapore has the death penalty for leaving trash on the sidewalk twice. First offense you only lose your hand. Japan is pioneering virtual girlfriends and sex robots. The US isn’t Singapore, Japan, or South Korea. The culture is different, the people are different. Using Asian nations who have always had a collectivist type culture is hardly informative or helpful to the US.
 
I was responding to Sarcelle’s post that named those countries and wondered why they gun violence rates were so low. From what I know of Mexico, it is in such a state of lawlessness that many people want to come to the US. The argument that “at least we are better than Mexico” is like trying to justify sin by citing the crimes of Hitler.
 
But that happens all over the world. Why are American people so vulnerable to going out and copycating and nowhere else?
 
Which countries would you say qualify as examples that could inform the US problem?
