If I recall correctly, this play, for one thing, glorifies a lesbian raping an teenage girl. Perhaps someone can find a link showing something about the contents of this play, since I have to go to a meeting now.
I’m in no way defending the play, which my friends tried to get our drama group to do. I came to this script with an open mind, because it had been highly recommended to me by friends. Then I saw the movie of the play and was appalled by the entire thing. Yes, it has the lesbian statutory rape, now a teenager but a 12 year old in the original script; a scene with repeated yells of the word c*** and a major attack on men in practically every monologue; I ended up wanting to slap the author upside the head.

While the intent of the play might be valid, the play itself is offensive.

Tongues were wagging today on KSFO the SanFrancisco “conservative” radio talk show station. People were calling in saying how ashamed they were to admit they were Catholic when they heard that a local Catholic University had invited a communist/socialist terrorist bomber to speak at the university. Bill Ayers, the neighbor(?acquaintance?) of our new President will be speaking about his views of education. One caller to the radio show said that she was told by some former communists that the plan of the communists was to infliltrate the Catholic Universities. She gave this example as proof it was happening.
I guess he had to speak SOMEWHERE as he was just REFUSED ENTRY into my country,Canada.Thank God for that immigration or customs officer.

Keep him,we don’t want him.

I would suggest that you read up on it, as it is a vile production which is gravely sinful in nature. However, I would think that the title alone constitutes a sin against decency. Does not the title of it concern you?
Steel, you are absolutely correct. The title itself is absurd and grossly offensive.

The Vagina Monologue … ??? As a Christian woman, I find this grossly demeaning. Is the whole purpose of this idiot production to reduce the worth of a woman down to her genetalia?

Nice. And this is what feminism has done to our country? No thanks. It’s time women took a stand against this trash and regained our dignity… and our class.

And if the CONTENT of the play were about married love, the joy of birth, and the sacramental unity of husband and wife, from a woman’s perspective, I bet any grownup, ordained or not, would be OK with the play. Because it’s the content you should object to, not the use of a correct term for a body part.
Correct terms used in vulgar ways result in assaulting the dignity of a person. That is what I, as a modest Christian woman, am offended at.

Are you upset because Cindy Sheehan is against the war in Iraq ?
It is more likely that people are upset by the fact that she referred to the terrorists and insurgents in Iraq as “freedom fighters”.

As to this Bill Ayers thing, what in the heck is that university thinking??? The man is a d*mn terrorist for crying out loud! And he is unrepentant! He dedicated one of his books to the man who killed Bobby Kennedy. This is sickening.

In Christ,
Rand

I supported Notre Dame on that one. The students are not cloistered and need to discuss relevant topics and hear alternative views.
What does this mean, that Catholic educators should provide opportunities for students to “hear alternative views”? Are you saying that we should not have any standards of decency in the education that we provide to our young people? Would you support a presentation of an alternative view of white supremacy? I should certainly hope not! And why not? BECAUSE IT’S WRONG!!! >.>

Come on folks… let’s get back to fighting for standards in our education system! If people want to send their kids to a university that has no moral standards, then fine, send them to a state school. But don’t let the moral backbone of our Catholic University system rot away with the rest of them.

Catholic institutions need to edify our young people in the faith! They have plenty of other sources of confusion… why are we going to tolerate confusion in our own institutions?

No way… enough is enough.

I haven’t seen the play but i don’t think that’s what it is about. Perhaps you should read several reviews and then make up your mind about your opinion of it.

Tell you what. I will happily read the reviews after you explain to me what the title means, and how it relates to the content of the play.

Does that sounds fair?

The title says it all. They’re monologues and they are mostly about vaginas – or rather what the author though a vagina was but isn’t.

Some of the monologues are mild, others are offensive to the Nth degree, and some are just absolutely stupid, again because the author got the terms wrong.

If you say that to a room full of feminist they just say you didn’t get it. And by feminists I mean men and women because it’s a man who advised me to see the movie and make sure that my daughter watched it too. He said it should be mandatory watching for all men, to help them understand the oppression women undergo. I told him the movie bored me and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

The title does NOT say it all. It sounds like a 14 year old giggly kid made it up after he learned the definition of vagina in bio class.

So, let’s see if you can give us a satisfying description of this play. Give us an example of a monologue that is supposedly about vagainas, but isn’t.

In fact, three examples would be great: mild, offensive, and stupid.

If this is such a great play, then tell us all about it.

When did I ever say that this was a great play???
I hate this play, as I’ve already said.

BTW, if that 14 year old had learned what the vagina was in school he probably wouldn’t have made the basic mistake this stupid author made and used the word vagina – a very specific part of a woman’s anatomy – when he should have used vulva.

What I have no problem with is the word vagina. To me it’s just a word, no different from cervix, uterus or fallopian tube – or liver and gallbladder or finger for that matter.

I have a serious problem with the play.
