Are the spiritualities of the “Catholic Charismatic Movement” and EWTN compatible? (Occasional references of the CCM by EWTN don’t count.)

Could there ever be dedicated CCM programming on EWTN?

Are they mutually exclusive?

Hmmm…I see the bigger question being: can we say that “Catholic” and “Charismatic” are compatible?

It could be one of their smartest moves yet.

EWTN has big problems because they simply don’t know how to do diplomacy. You could want the Inquisition to burn every heritic non-stop till the face of the Earth is free of them, but before you get there, you have to play some games.

Some are too stupid and quickly accuse a seemingly conservative group of traitors, but sometimes, it is an inspiration from God. God wants saints and saints are not fools. They know how to set traps and when hide their colors when neccesary and keep the mission going, till they reach their goal and complete their mission, doing the good to those who they were called to give it to and destroy those who get in their way.

Labling yourself either right or left is the silliest thing to do.
You close doors. Keeping the enemy (and by this I mean the ones inside) of balance is the hardest, yet only way to do good in these times. Awaiting till God intervenes in these times and then show your colors in all their splendour. Then we can build a saintly society.

For now, patience and many smiles.

Of course we can. It’s a recognized and approved charism within the Church.
Yes, but, there are problems with the movement, especially in the manner in which some of the groups have treated the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Unfortunately, I have witnessed this, not only here, but in Austin. They have introduced some “innovations” to the Mass that are based more on idiosyncracy than anything else. Furthermore, some have made statements that are most troubling. One woman told me that a prelate friend of mine did not have the Holy Spirit because he did not want the movement in his parish. I told her that this was not an appropriate statement to make and that he had his reasons. In fact, the woman’s statements confirmed my friend’s suspicions. The deacon in charge of the movement has had Holy Hours where he has had the faithful touch the Luna or kiss it.

Some of the adherents to the movement also believe that they can heal. I tried the movement for a while shortly after my mother died. But, there were things about it that didn’t set well with me. They are good people and they mean well, but some of the adherents tend to distort Church teaching, and, like the members of other movements, they tend to make the movement more important than the Church and that is always a bad thing.

That is why I doubt that EWTN would ever broadcast a liturgy of the Charismatic Movement, let alone a LifeTeen Mass or a Neocatechumenal Way Mass.

Benedictgal, I love reading your answers as well as those of Fr.David96…always knowledgeable and informative …always rational…never unkind…and always supportive of the Church.

Well there’s diplomacy and then there’s just more political correctness run amok.

I like the current format they have although I would like some more Latin based masses though

I know. But there is also stupid trado mentality that does not know how to do things right and hinder in the end the restoration of the Church.

I pray it never happens.
Then I shall pray you’re never in charge of programming for EWTN. 🙂

Just because a part of a movement does things that are not in keeping with correct liturgical and theological procedures doesn’t mean that the whole movement should be condemned out of hand. I’m not saying that you specifically are doing this, but it does seem that a lot of folks on this forum (and others I’ve been on) do this. It’s a bit like – as the old saying goes – throwing the baby out with the bath water.

There are good things in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and LifeTeen movements. Both movements have drawn people into the Catholic Church and more importantly, have drawn people closer to Our Lord Jesus (which should be the goal of ALL Catholics). I cannot comment on the Neocatechuemnal Way as a movement as I know very little about it. I do not require anyone here to educate me on it. I have a friend called Google and he is very good at helping me find unbiased information on a wide variety of topics. 👍

I’m not trying to start a debate here. I just wanted to point out that you shouldn’t judge a movement by the few people who do something wrong. To judge a movement like CCR and LT (which are both supported by the Holy See as valid ministries) just because a few people take things too far or commit liturgical abuse is no different than the myriad of people who have judged the entirety of the Catholic priesthood based on the few priests who have committed sexual sins and crimes (I’m of course referring to the priest sex scandal).

That’s just my :twocents:

I believe that at some point EWTN management will feel adventurous enough that it will have a one-off broadcast of a charismatic mass. Depending on the feedback, they may or may not choose to do so more regularly. I would certainly watch, as I’m very curious what exactly such a mass entails. But I’m not so curious that I have a desire to attend one myself.

On the other hand, EWTN has its own agenda/purpose, as most cable channels do. But unlike say Bravo, which completely changed its agenda when it discovered it could get better ratings showing say Queer Eye than showing high brow movies, I don’t think EWTN is all that sensitive to ratings. Not driven by advertising, and lacking any real competition, EWTN may be most worried about alienating its current contributors. A charismatic mass may be politically incorrect enough for that group that EWTN would fear a ruckus, which could affect the bottom line.

**And much the same thing can be said about Traditionalists, but nobody wants to suppress them.

My only problem with the idea of a “charismatic mass” is this: how do you have closer contact with the Holy Spirit than through the Body and Blood of Christ?

EVERY Eucharistic Sacrifice is by its nature charismatic.**

I would not have know how to answer you in 1965. Please! Let us old fogies have EWTN! I don’t know how many times I’ve brought this up - we submitted to the magesterium of HMC in 1965 and, in hindsight, were presented a “bill of goods”

Please let us have a Catholic channel devoid of protestant overtones. As far as the East is from the West…

I grew up in HMC before Vatican II. I saw my parents and me marginalized in the 70s. I am a product of 13 years of Catholic education from 1956 to 1969 and I live across the street from a pastor of a 'hand waving", “slain in the spirit” pentecostal fundamentalist pastor and HE AIN’T US.

I deeply resent how my heritage has been taken from me. I can’t say word one against the CCM or Life Teen Movements. It’s not what I grew up with. And if fair is fair, y’all have no business criticizing me with your patronizing and condescending opinions.

I’m not dead. I’m 57. I would much prefer that I be living in Catholic New Orleans but I live in Baton Rouge where Brother Jimmy and his Protestant mega-church cohorts live.

I am content to be a Roman Catholic. Credo - I believe. The Holy Ghost may move where he pleases but none of the CCM esistted before V II. So, with respect, prove it to me.

I frequenty watch Daily Mass on EWTN. Truly a gift from God:thumbsup:

Is the CM movement compatible with EWTN?

Spiritually, yes, both strive to aid us in our personal relationshop with Christ.

One might see a program or a CM speaker, but I do not think the typical CM Mass, is what Mother has in mind. Not that it’s wrong,
rather that EWTN is an international Broadcast, and should reflect
the decorum and Sacred Tradition that they do. It offends noone.

CM can and does. But for those who enjoy this public display of love, devotion and Worship, it’s awesome:D If it works for you GREAT, if not, don’t prevent others from growing closer to Christ.

God bless you,

PJM m.c.

BVM please lead us to your Son!

I have my suspicions about the movement, suspicions which are born just as much out of close contact with adherents as out of things I’ve read second-hand. But when I say I don’t think EWTN will ever air a “charismatic Mass” it is not because of the movement per se but because the idea of a charismatic Mass is foreign to the mind of the Church, whereas EWTN seems to strive towards the Church’s ideal (which they seem to believe lies in a compromise in the NO between Latin and vernacular).

The mind of the Church is that you take the Roman Rite, say the black, and do the red. The music of the Roman Rite, also, is prescribed for each and every Mass, and if that prescribed music is not used any subsitutions are to be considered less worthy the more they depart from the official ideal of Gregorian chant. How would a “charismatic Mass” (not a form of Mass, mind, found in the Roman Sacramentary) rate against that ecclesiastical standard? Any extras dealing with tongues, healing, etc. wouldn’t belong, and praise and worship music certainly doesn’t come close in form to chant. EWTN knows this, and thus isn’t going to put their name behind it.

Now, this does not exclude the possibility of their covering non-Mass charismatic services or offering other types of charismatic programming, all of which would depend on how much they liked the movement and wanted to give it a platform.
