Yes that is a good question. And they are wearing much more self-protective masks while the general public including those who shame others are only wearing flimsy cloth ones when the N95s are now available on home depot and similar masks are available on Amazon to the general public. Yet I do not see those people switching to a more self-protective mask. That leads me to believe this is about compliance, uniformity of belief, and virtue signalling. Not actually solving the problem for people who do not want to get COVID.

You do not need insurance to get healthcare-especially preventative. Tens of thousands of free clinics are across the country. 94% of the people without insurance might not even be that poor-$48,000 income for a single, $97,000 for a family of four. If those people live in the South(where Medicaid has not been expanded) those incomes are more than sufficient to also pay for health insurance. Illegal immigrants should not receive free medical care on the U.S. taxpayer dime. That would be unethical and lead to further illegal immigration for subsidies our citizens should be receiving. This is not their country and they would not be turned away from care at an ER at any rate. Some people choose to not spend their money on health insurance because there are other options for the healthcare they need and they are young and don’t want to spend their money on it. 🤷

Does this handle serious conditions and surgery?

Certainly I don’t understand how the US handles illegal immigrants. On the one hand, they seem to be welcomed and provided with sanctuary cities and such.

I guess it’s arguable they should not have that choice, given as a community we agree to not abandon them when they are in need. But of course that becomes a debate about individual rights (to be stupid). An option of course is to have publicly provided “insurance” via the tax system - which can’t be escaped, at least for citizens.

I suppose if they need surgery they best get health insurance on the public option and/or find a more affordable living situation. There are payment plans available and if they cannot afford to pay the deductible even through a payment plan, I’m sure a company could wave some debt for them.

Anybody else notice that now in the waning days of the forum,

Some people’s claws are showing?
I’m actually really enjoying it.

It’s been reminding me of C.S. Lewis’s ‘The Great Divorce’.

Seeing how people respond to the final moments, to saying goodbye, to the sun coming up.

In particular I’m enjoying waving goodbye to those posters who thought they could hold heaven hostage to hell forever, or bring hell into heaven, and they’re about to lose an audience to their anti-Catholic efforts, that they had fancied might one day succeed.

I’m more disappointed than anything.

When the forum closing announcement first happened, there was shock and sadness, and even some people saying they’d miss the spirited debates.

Now some people’s facade is cracking

I haven’t really read up in this thread so I’m not quite sure what you’re referring to, specifically.

I’m still on cheerful, myself.

But then, I like facades cracking. I don’t like façades. So people showing their true faces is always satisfying to me, since I’d rather have been seeing their true face the whole time, and consider it a waste (including of their time) for a facade to have been put up in the first place. Especially when the facades seemed transparent but they wouldn’t admit them until a time limitation induced them to.

Actually, not this thread in particular, but in other threads

I hope I’m not one of the ones disappointing you, haha. (Apologies if I am.) Is it political stuff?

I normally hang out in the world news forum.
The claws are out every election cycle.
But I have noticed a few claws in odd places recently.

Earlier today, in a joke thread of all places, someone brought in politics and the trolling.

It was surreal given the nature the joke thread has kept for the past couple of years.

why do we need universal healthcare as opposed to the programs we have now for the elderly and infirm?
Not everyone who doesn’t have insurance is elderly or infirm.

Charitable organizations (free clinics, etc.) sometimes are means-tested and sometimes simply don’t have the resources to serve all of the actual impoverished, let alone those who have a job but cannot afford health insurance.

Government programs such as Medicaid have ridiculously low maximum income limits. Being at he Federal “poverty line” is often too high to qualify.

Sort answer is that the programs we (federal, state, local, and charitable combined) don’t cover all who need the help. Note that I am talking about need, I am not counting those who could afford health coverage but choose not to buy it.

My question was why do so many medical professionals get covid despite wearing masks. I thought about it later. Of course, the patients must not be wearing masks. The medical professionals aren’t washing their hands, or they’re touching their eyes. Not likely. Or maybe they’re breathing it from the air and the masks aren’t doing much since the air molecules are too small. But, even asking the question provokes flagging. If you don’t agree with mask wearing (as I’ve said my lungs are suffering greatly from wearing masks at work), you do not fit in with the Catholic teaching on this site. Even linking articles about masks not being helpful, or less helpful than believed here, would get you flagged.

The moderation has been very poor on this site. You can’t really have a good conversation on this forum because somebody with hurt feelings always trumps somebody with logic.
I just spent the night in the hospital. I noticed lots of men who were medical professionals that had beards and wore mask. There is no way a beard allows the proper use of a mask.

Yet what’s the point of shaving if you’re going to wear a mask? 🙂

Sorry you had to spend the night in the hospital. Every minute outside of a hospital is precious.

Never trust a man that runs a sharp blade across his throat every morning before coffee . . .

 🤣

more seriously (well, somewhat; i take my beard seriously . . ) . . . the mask isn’t about being airtight; it’s about stopping direct spray outward of watery particles, and minimizing the amount that come in. While I would be surprised if it is so, it is conceivable that the crushed beard below the mask is a better filter than the mask anyway. 🤔

I thought this thread was about where to go next now the forum is closing lol.

Another direction to take the Catholic Answers forums would have been to scale them up rather than scale them down.

If the people from other parts of CA (radio personalities, etc.) had participated visibly in the CA forums, then participation in the CA forums and related financial giving would have been significantly different.
