A little too disheartening

As the number of deaths climb to over 5,000 in the US , 10 million filing for unemployment and probably more bad days to come. It’s all a little too much to take sometimes.

Add to that it does appear that Right leaning and Republican leaders are getting slammed (especially the president) for some questionable early decisions.

The deaths, loss of jobs, sickness, fear and the thought of the Democrats taking control of everything is all a little bit too much. Not to mention possible food shortages and rioting.
There is also reports of China having deliberately waged a biological war to bring the US down.

While this tragedy has exposed my attachments to the above(especially the political side) the future at this point does not look bright. I had hoped for things but now they seem to be all taken away.

Anyway this is mainly to vent and to ask for prayers.

So, they did this to their own people to get at the U.S.? Interesting, though extremely flawed thinking.

I would like to suggest that you stop scanning the news, be it tv or internet for everything you can get. For most people, it is too difficult to hear. And furthermore, we are all helpless to do anything anyway, so what is the point of overloading ourselves with daily updates of the numbers?

Politics should be left out of this. Neither side caused it, and neither side can end it or claim they fixed things.

Remove yourself from the news and just pray for everyone.

There are almost 156 million people employed/working in the United States

The prediction is worst case scenario, 47 million could be out of work. That is many people, however, there are generous programs to assist those who are out of work due to the COVID.

We are a people of hope, do not despair!!

I agree… for China to do that …seems a little too fanciful, but they do appear stronger now. I guess uncertain times gives rise to these theories for something to hold onto amidst chaos.

Thanks for the encouraging & wise words but it does seem like a lot of people i speak to o 1:1 seem very angry with the way things are and automatically start to blame

Perhaps you can be the calming one then. Steer the conversation elsewhere. Be the one that soothes their spirit.

So many questions arise. What do we believe? Guaranteed long life? Prosperity? Happiness? None of this. Rather, suffering - which is only the labor pains.

Have faith! Prevent the vent.

Easy to say? It takes work and it’s time to get to work.

What’s going on now is terrible, but the USA has been through much, much, much worse, and a lot of it was stuff my parents and their generation lived through. (Not to mention the bad stuff that happened in the 19th century like the Civil War, and the 18th century like various gory attacks on settlers generally and Catholics in particular.) They persevered and so will we persevere through this bad time that frankly is not so bad compared to some of the past bad times.

This is so true. I keep reminding myself and others that we have been through A LOT in this country, as has the whole world, and we always go on. I think especially for Americans, we have not had something like this in a really long time. I think this is why so many are freaking out, lashing out, falling into despair. This is something WE have not experienced but our ancestors have.

People in the USA have a really bad sense of history. I’m not sure why this is. People always complain that they weren’t properly taught history in school, but unless you happen to go to a school with top academics, which most people don’t, you’re not going to learn very much about anything in school. Most of what I learned in my life was not learned in school, put it that way. I read a lot. I also had old parents and so did my husband so we were way more in tune with stuff like the Depression and WWII than some of our peers (husband also liked history and read a lot), plus my parents were each the youngest children in big families so they could talk about stuff that happened decades before they were born because they knew about it from their older siblings.

The news media also exploits mass death events in an unhelpful and often unsavory way.

Chinese government killed 73 million of their own citizens in past century alone

They’ve aborted as many as 400 million babies in past century

That’s close to killing a half billion of their own people in past century

But they’re not willing to infect 80,000?

Interesting, though extremely flawed.

Why do you want to make this political? Why does anyone want to put on tin foil conspiracy hats regarding sabotage of our country?

First and foremost, we will get through this. Our country has been through a great deal in its short history. The problem today is that folks are a bunch of whiners.

The depression was terrible, and lasted for years. With people being smart and distancing from others, this will likely be over in a few months. Had our nation responded appropriately when this thing first started, we wouldn’t be in the shape we are now. This is the only political portion of my post, but the President is in charge of all the departments which are supposed to deal this sort of event. The response on his part was very lacking, he didn’t listen to the folks who know about this sort of thing.

The American people went out and purchased a years worth of toilet papers for a respiratory disease. Really? They went to the beaches on spring break, kept having parties, and other social gatherings.

No one should wonder why with 5% of the worlds population we have almost 1/4 of the reported cases. India and China are about 40% of the world population and have 8% of the cases. The same line of thinking that got us into this situation is why we as a country use so many more opiods than any other country or combination of countries in the world.

We are too self centered.

If this does really turn out bad and we end up in a depression like we had a century ago, you will find out the real character of the people in this country. Folks will be stealing anything they can get their hands on and killing folks to either get it or keep it.

I am in the last part of tax season now, and have been inundated with calls from folks who are supposed to be “conservative” wanting to know how to get this “free” money the gov. is handing out.

Which brings me to a final point. What has the gov. response been to this and the last crisis we had starting in 2008. Throw money that we don’t have at it and get nothing back for it. If this current crisis doesn’t “reset” the US line of thinking, we are simply kicking the can down the road, and one day, we will have to endure a depression probably worse than the one my parents lived through.

President Critics in January 2020: “Trump is a xenophobe! He closed our border with China!!!”

President Critics in April 2020: “Why didn’t Trump do more to protect us?”

I guess you and I would disagree on whether the glass is half empty or half full then. So be it.

LOL I have a container of bacon grease in my freezer. IDK what I’m going to do with it, but it’s there. Just one container, because I only make bacon at home about once a year (it’s way too messy as well as unhealthy). I mistook it for vanilla ice cream the other night.

Because we’re reporting the cases.
Other countries aren’t, or they aren’t testing enough to have good numbers to report.
Simple as that.

I’m pretty sure there are countries where a lot of people will die from COVID-19 but their deaths will be officially recorded as something else.

We’ll never even know how many people have this disease in our country or worldwide, because most people who are asymptomatic or have a mild case aren’t getting tested. I could have had it myself and not even know it. I don’t even think we know enough about possible symptoms - I had a minor earache for much of the last two weeks (gone now) and for all I know that could be a symptom and there just hasn’t been enough research to confirm it yet.

I get reminded sometimes of irrelevant things, so here goes. This post reminds me of a scene in Tom Wolfe’s “Man in Full”. This rich guy is having a Jewish financier and his wife to dinner. The financier’s wife remarks to the cook how marvelous the salad tastes. The cook replies “…anything tastes good with a little bacon grease on it…” Needless to say that dampened the dinner considerably.

But be careful, a teaspoon full of solidified bacon grease is not my idea of a good thing to eat.

But I’m not worried about the food supply. Among other things, I raise cattle. Prices are really little if any different from what they were before this virus. No shortage of cattle either. The numbers going to market are a little higher than last year at this time, but not by much, and it was expected anyway.

I don’t think food is going to be affected much, if at all.

We certainly have no shortage of fresh food at the stores I’ve been to. A lot of the canned stuff sold out because people all bought a month’s worth of cans when usually they don’t touch the stuff. As I do not peraonally have any reason to avoid the grocery store (I’m not immunocompromised, elderly, don’t have people at home in that category, haven’t been exposed to the disease myself) I’m just picking up some fresh meat, cheese, produce and milk every few days and mostly eating that. It is in plenteous supply, as opposed to the cereal, canned fruit and tuna fish that I had to scour the shelves to find.

Something one needs to consider is the fact that farmers and ranchers don’t live in crowded cities. They mostly live on the land with their families and their social contacts aren’t very broad. And if a rancher feels too sick to feed the cattle right now, he can either let it go because the new grass is coming on anyway, or he can get a neighbor or relative to do it for him for awhile. If a rancher feels achy as he drives his tractor plowing the ground, it’s not something he can’t manage.

For the really sick, it’s different, of course, but I have a feeling not enough farmers or ranchers are getting sick to affect the food supply noticeably.

Now, when it comes to processing, that’s different. And the more highly processed the food, the more labor it takes to do it, and the greater the chances of a plant shutdown. But those plants are generally out in the country, not in Manhattan.
