Knighthorse: When you say that hell could not be a certain way or probably is not a certain way, no one can say that authoritatively. Be assured that it is thousands of times worse than we can even imagine. That alone should be enough to cause concern, regardless of what specific punishments are meted out there. As I said before, if one specific punishment is absent, be assured that there are a hundred others to take its place, each one suitably bad.
To base one’s belief in God just on what punishment a person would receive in hell, is not what God had in mind when He created you. He wants you to come to Him, to come to His Son, and believe, and be a child of His. He does not want you to believe in him conditionally or not at all or depending upon what He would do to you in hell. None of those things are the marks of a true believer. A true believer has doubts but does not base his or her faith in God in what might happen to him after death, at least not solely.
