So I have to answer your challenges inorder for you to help me with the Koine Greek word of Adephos, not Adelphos. That makes me believe that you don’t have the Koine Greek meaning. What kind of man would put a stipulation on helping someone to learn. Do you always put stipulations on things? You can’t be a gentleman and help with the meaning without stipulations? You say we don’t know things and we need to educate ourselves so we won’t be ignorante of Scripture, then when asked for help you put stipulations on it. Sorry but that is pretty sad.
Kevin - I AM looking for the website. However - I’m also at work.
**I asked you to answer my challenges first because I asked them several pages ago. **It’s only fair for you to answer my questions that were asked FIRST - don’t you think?
How does that make me less of a gentleman?

I would think that makes YOU less of a gentleman to ignore my questions, then demand that I answer yours.

Wow**, Doki.**
All I can say is . . . WOW.

**This is the *****best *****you can do? Showing verses that illustrate the ****other **usage of "until"?? Nody said that it only had one single usage. That is **PRECISELY **my point - that is DOES have other uses.

**You *****haven’t *proven that Mary had other children. It simply doesn’t say this in Scripture - ANYWHERE. **While you’re at it - chew on tis one:
Deut. 34:6 tells us that nobody knew the location of Moses’ grave “until this present day”. Did they find it AFTER? Not according to the Scriptures . . .

We’re getting close to 1000 posts and not one, single Protestant (except for you, but that was hardly an answer) has been able to answer EITHER** of the 2 challenges I’ve made on this thread:**
1. Can you please give me a clear and comprehensive response to what the Fathers taught about infant Baptism and how they not only supported it but practiced it?

*2. ***PLEASE show me where it says that she was the mother of anybody else other than Jesus and I will leave the Catholic Church today - I PROMISE.
Nice try but no cigar. 🙂

So now the Didache is the Word of God and carries the same authority of the Bible? Someone decided to advise to say it 3 times a day and that proves oral traditions passed on by the writers of Scripture? Another huge leap for the Elvis-Man.
The Word of God was delivered to the Church, and it is visible in many threads through the early writings. The Word of God can be found in the Didache, and in other places.

The Bible does not have “authority”. Authority is an actvitiy that can only be exercised by persons, so no, writings do not exercise any authority. Jesus gave authority to the Church. When the Church uses the Scriptures as they are intended, they are authoritative.
Code:
Which Apostles; Paul and Peter; especially Paul was continually warning and addressing FALSE teachings that infiltrated the church of Jesus.
Yes, he did. they were able to distinguish truth from falsehood by clinging to the Teachings of the Apostles (sacred Tradition). this was especially true prior to the creation of the NT. There were many spurious writings about that were also claiming to be inspired.
The perpetual virginity of Mary is an invention; how can we know this? It contradicts directly the Word of God and the very voice of Jesus. I choose to believe the God of the Christian Bible as opposed to men who wrote heresies as I see it.
I can understand how it seems this way to you.

It seems like there is a contradiction to you because you are not understanding what is written in the Scripture. However, the Apostles taught that Jesus was the only child of His mother, and when we read the NT with that knowledge, we understand it differently.
Code:
Notice the threads always come down to those defending the Word of God and those defending the writing of men. Have you not seen the pattern? It exists in every apologetic and non-Catholic religions.
Yes, I see the pattern. The heresy of Sola Scriptura is probably the most damaging heresy of all time. It continually creates more division and discord.
I would like to know how the teachings of the magesterium and the Scripture became equal in the site of Catholics - that intrigues me more than anything,
I am glad you are at least open to learning this. The answer is quite simple. Jesus commmitted everything to His Apostles, and they to their successors. The Teaching of the Apostles was the standard before a word of the NT was every written. After the letters and gospels began to be written, the contents were understood in the light of what was already held by the church as the Word of God. That is why, for Catholics, there is no contradiction between the two strands of the Word, written, and oral.
because to be equal to any authority of God’s word; He would have to share that authority and give up some of His sovereignty and then the magesterium in effect would become “god”;]/quote]

This is just a simple misunderstanding about authority and sovereignty. God’s appointment of earthly authority is not an abdication of His own. He does not become less sovereign because he allows men to carry authority.

Humans cannot become “God” by nature, but we do partake of godliness by grace. Remember what Jesus said about those to whom the Word of God came?
Masters Servant;6520428:
not just a representative because to be equal with His word, which is an extension of God Himself; like a finger is to a human.
I think this is true. I think that is why He said “he who hears you, hears me”.
Code:
Then one would have to show that God gave that sovereignty and equality to the magisterium.
This is a false conclusion, based upon a false premise. The authority of God given to men does not make them “equal” to God.
Since Hebrews in effect removed the formal priesthood, and the Bible say God alone can forgive sins; yet that is the claim.
None of the Law was “removed”. It was all fulfilled. Jesus fulfilled the type of the High Priest by becoming our eternal High Priest. The ministerial priesthood is the fulfillment of the OT type of the ministers, and they are effective because they are grafted into the ONE priesthood that Jesus embodies.
“The priest is, indeed, another Christ, or in some way, he is himself a continuation of Christ.” (Pope Pius XI, Encylical on the Priesthood) How is this reconciled to Matt 24?
the priest acts in the person of Christ, but he is not “another”. He reflects the priesthood of Christ to the flock. He holds the ministry of reconciliation.

It seems like a lot of issues, and it may be better if we took them one at a time?

Elvisman
In post 837 I asked you if you could give me a site/link of the Koine Greek meaning of the word, Adephos. Be a gentle man and provide me with them.
Also since Adelphos has more then one meaning and one being blood brothers it is very plausible,if not very likely, that Jesus had infant brothers and sisters from the same mother since there are many meanings of the word.
No. there are no amount of meanings of words that can change the facts. Mary had only one Child, who she named Jesus.

We must understand the writings in the light of this Truth.

In these 4 verses we see the following: turn from your sins and turn to God save yourselves those who believe…were baptized. then in verse 42 it says, They joined with the other believers… can a infant do any of these things?
The Church has never prevented infants from joining with the assembly. It is true, they are a nuisance at times, but they are part of the family of God.

You have demonstrated the biggest problem with trying to extrapolate doctrine by looking at a verse.

Sound Doctrine is to be received by those to whom it was committed. When this is done, it is easy to see that there are no contradictions with the Scirptures.
Acts 26:6 "Now I am on trial because I am looking forward to the fulfillment of God’s promise made to our ancestors. The promise hadn’t happened yet.
The promise applies to those who have not yeat been born. It is also applied to those who are born in this generation.
When God promised Abraham that he would become the father of many nations, did it happen right away? NO.
Yes. It was a done deal when the promise was made. It took some time for it to manifest itself.
Then we have this in Hebrews 7, "you will follow the example of those who are going to inherit God’s promises because of their faith and patience. Are they going to get this promise right away, NO
This is one of the reasons we reject the doctrine of OSAS. We understand that some of the promises are not found in this life.

I agree… It is sad that you have not answered the challenge on infant baptism and keep tap dancing around this. Please stick to what this thread is about. How about rev… answer the challenge or move on to another thread.

Matthew
So when does asking for help become a question? When does asking for help come with stipulations? If you read his first part he said he would then on his last part he put a stipulation on it. Why don’t you answer the challange? Do you know the answer? If yes then what is it? Oh ya you don’t have to because the challenge is not for your denomination. I tried but he would not accept the answer. And who are you to tell me to move on to another thread? Since when are you incharge of threads?
I did not start this brother thing, I made a statement in one of my answers then someone eles started the questioning about one answer so I’m not tap dancing around. To be honest I don’t really care what the fathers believed of practiced it. I don’t care if you baptize infants or not. My denomination don’t and that is what I will go by. If you don’t like it then don’t like it. I’m not here to please you or your denomination.

Nice try but no cigar. 🙂
You are rigth there, Doki. It is impossible to show that the mother of Jesus gave birth to any other children. However it is easy to show that all the children named as his brothers and sisters are children of another Mary. 😃

No, Sacred Tradition is the oral transmission what came down from the original Apostles, the some of same ones whom wrote Sacred Scripture.
Mane one and prove it was authorized by God. You can’t because if you read what Paul said "So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word {of mouth} or by letter from us." All he is saying is be faithful to what you are taught weather in person or by the form of a letter; the message is the same; it is the delivery method that is the issue-obvious, which is why no one can come up with these “extra traditions” and show it came from God.
Another red-herring. Catholics believe in the same God as you. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Since you bring up "Catholic intervention"claim, please see this link. You’re better off hearing what Catholics believe from us than Lorraine Boettner.
A red herring is code word that I cannot address your point w/o contradiction of God’s Word…LOL
Have you not noticed that the Catholics are defending their beliefs with the Bible and witness of those whom lived at the same as the Apostles? You’re creating a false dichotomy.
No I have not yet to see that; I’m still waiting for some correct contextual use of the Bible.
More red-herrings. God has made us “partakers of the divine nature” (2nd Peter 1:4) and in the image of Himself (see Genesis). God has already shared of Himself with us. Catholics are confessing their sins to God via a priest whom a representative of the Church and acting persona Christi. Please pick a subject and stick to it: there’s no need to bring up Confession while we are speaking about baptism.
more I can’t refute what you said w/out contradicting the Word of God AKA “Red Herring”
As required by forum rules, please cite all quotes. Since there’s an insinuation that the priests are trying to replace Christ, here’s the whole quote from Ad Catholici Sacerdotii:
I’d for one would like a response to this post. As per forum rules the citation is there unless you are blind; oh never mind…what am I thinking.

I felt you were coming around and thought okay to talk to you; but you have digressed and when you start bringing up “rules”, as you are guilty of breaking; two words pop into my mind tattle-tale and hypocrite
You obviously are not interested in debating any issues; so fool me once shame on you ; fool me twice shame on me - hope you have a good life and the Wind blows your way.

God bless - MS

I’m not trying to say the meaning of the word has to do with Mary having other children. I’m trying to learn something.

If you don’t like it then don’t like it. I’m not here to please you or your denomination.
Ok, rev kev, take some deep breaths, and some meditative prayer! You have let yourself get frustrated.

The Catholic Church is not a “denomination”. To denominate is to take one’s name from. the Catholic Church is that from which all other ecclesial communities are denominated.

I don’t think anyone needs to be here to please the Catholic Church. But I am curious, why ARE you here?

Mane one and prove it was authorized by God.
One of the Sacred Traditions is that the Word of God that came to the Church is equal in value to the Word that came in written form.

1Th 2:13 And for this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when ye received from us the word of the message, even the word of God, ye accepted it not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also worketh in you that believe.

The Word of God is alive and well in the Church, and is preserved infallibly there by God.
We are in agreeement that the written word is the same in quaility to the oral word. Protestants became disconnected from the Sacred Tradtions when the Reformers separated from the Apsotolic Succession about 500 years ago. The traditions are not “extra”. What has happened is that you have received a limited gospel from your spiritual ancestors, who were cut off from part of what the Apstles believed and taught.
A red herring is code word that I cannot address your point w/o contradiction of God’s Word…LOL
No, it is an observation that you are throwing something into the mix that does not belong, with the apparent intent of taking the focus off the real subject.
Code:
No I have not yet to see that; I'm still waiting for some correct contextual use of the Bible.
The context of the Bible is the Catholic Church. The catholic church wrote and added 27 books to the Alexandrian Septuagint, and closed the canon in 382 AD. There is nothing in it that is inconsistent with catholic teaching, because they both came from the same source.

I’m not trying to say the meaning of the word has to do with Mary having other children. I’m trying to learn something.
Ok. What are you trying to learn?

Do you understand that some uses of the word “until” do not imply anything about subsequent action?

I realize you may never accept that this is the way it is used with regard to Mary and her virginity, but if you can see that it is possible, it is a start.

What the word Adephos meand in Kione Greek. I went on several sites of the Kione Greek and it puts me to the word Adelphos. I want to know the real meaning of the word. It may not be important to you but it is to me. See I was told that the meaning of the word Adephos does not mean a connective particle, and delphus (the womb) a brother. I was told that it means what the word Adelphos means. So I want to know the true meaning of the word.

I’m thankful that you are really searching for the meaning of words. It certainly does help to understand what was being said. However, proof texting is no way to prove anything. It can help to know scripture, but to use it out of context is just as wrong. If find it humorous now that I ever doubted infant baptism. I was also raised Protestant and know the arguments against, but realized as I learned more and more the problem with approaching scripture this way.

Good topic though.

If you don’t know what a word means then it makes it hard to understand Scripture correctly. Now I was raised Catholic but always doubted the infant baptism thing. Now I’m not saying its wrong nor am I saying its correct. I just have my doubts about it.

Kevin,
I want to tell you that I believe its great you’re even bothering to look at this website. The reason I say this is because I once too was a member of a group known as the “church of Christ”, bible only Christians. I even went to the seminary at one point in my life and it wasn’t until much later that I realized that what wasn’t taught me is what helped me run away later. I was preparing to become a preacher too but on my journey discovered the ACF, Didache and much more. I finally began to understand things in a different light. That light was Catholics that actually know the faith. I was exactly like you on the topic of baptism and never really got it until on my way home. It was not one single item that convinced me to come back home but rather many of them at the same time. The only group that made any sense to me were Catholic and Orthodox.

Word studies are good, don’t overly interpret what I mean. I do believe it is a good thing to do. Context is always important and after study the bible solo scriptura for 34 years now I’ve realized so much I kept missing. I found myself asking really difficult questions to the “bible degreed” people teaching bible class. I was very anti-Catholic at that time and kept running into thinks that finally began to make sense to me after all of those years of being a bible Christian. The answers I received were quite empty and more evasive because they brought into question what we really believed as a “church”. I found so many inconsistencies that I struggled for many more years before coming to a realization of what I perceive as “the truth”. I grew up attending a Southern Baptist church and attending mass as well. I didn’t start practicing anything that even resembled Catholicism until I was 14, the first year I began to really study the bible. I was a bible only Catholic thinking a lot of very misconceived notions about what’s what. I’ll elaborate later on somewhere else.

Thanks for asking though. When I get rested I’ll try to elaborate somewhere that makes sense. I hope I can save you much heartache that I went through. It was not fun and I am very happy to be Catholic again, only this time much more understanding compared to what I once was. Always seek truth. But from what I’ve seen you post so far it sounds like that is your intention. 👍

This Scripture passage is the same one we use to show Sacred Tradition. Don’t believe me? Read it here. Since we are to be faithful to what is taught by the Apostles in either letter or mouth, how are you being faithful to what they’ve said by mouth?
A red herring is code word that I cannot address your point w/o contradiction of God’s Word…LOL
No, a red herring is a “fallacy in which an irrelevant topic is presented in order to divert attention from the original issue. The basic idea is to ‘win’ an argument by leading attention away from the argument and to another topic.” See here. An example of a red herring would be to bring up auricular Confession while speaking about baptism.
No I have not yet to see that; I’m still waiting for some correct contextual use of the Bible.
At least we are in agreement now that both parties are using the Word of God.
more I can’t refute what you said w/out contradicting the Word of God AKA “Red Herring”
See above.
As per forum rules the citation is there unless you are blind; oh never mind…what am I thinking.
Yes, the citation was there but what was missing was the link so we all could read the Pope’s words in context. However, you might be unaware that all papal encyclicals and current catechism are available on the Vatican’s website.
I felt you were coming around and thought okay to talk to you; but you have digressed and when you start bringing up “rules”, as you are guilty of breaking; two words pop into my mind tattle-tale and hypocrite
There’s no tattle tale-ing involved: the only person I’ve warned about breaking the rules is you. If you feel I’ve broken any rules, then contact a Mod.
You obviously are not interested in debating any issues; so fool me once shame on you ; fool me twice shame on me - hope you have a good life and the Wind blows your way.
I am very interested in debating the issues, which is why I brought to you one of my posts to your attention. Instead, you’ve chosen to not to discuss it.
EDIT: Here’s the appropriate link for the post I was referring to. The last link was to a faith tract–oops!
God bless - MS
To you as well! 🙂

The Catholic Church is not a “denomination”. To denominate is to take one’s name from. the Catholic Church is that from which all other ecclesial communities are denominated.
While I am in agreement with you here, I’d say that the Church is a denomination is a sense that we are here in the name of Jesus! 😃

**I didn’t comment because it was - well, the nicest way I can pout it is, REALLY silly. All you did was talk about how "until" is also used in the normal way, meaning that something will happen ****after ****the fact. **
This in NO WAY negates the other usage regarding the verses I gave you **(****Acts 2:34-35, Psalm 110:1, 2 Samuel 6:23).
Correct, no negation on my part. I know I don’t have to remind you that it’s context, context, context.

If the sentence said, ‘June did not have sex with her husband until her first child was born’, what would you conclude after the baby was born?

**You *****haven’t *proven that Mary had other children. It simply doesn’t say this in Scripture - ANYWHERE. **While you’re at it - chew on tis one:

*2. ***PLEASE show me where it says that she was the mother of anybody else other than Jesus and I will leave the Catholic Church today - I PROMISE.
I commented that I wasn’t trying to prove Mary had more children, even though I think it’s quite possible. I’ve looked at the evidence from you and others that she did not have more children and while it makes one think a bit, I still think it’s more probable she did have those children mentioned and the Bible isn’t real clear on the issue.

As for you leaving the CC, that is not nor was it ever my goal. I would want each of us to be honest with ourselves and embrace Jesus only and to be thankful to Him that He lead us to the churches we are in, for His purposes, understanding they are NOT perfect. I do NOT want you to leave the CC if that’s the place you are drawn closer to Jesus and to fellow Christians.
