See, here is a great illustration of what is wrong with this kind of thinking: The people crying the loudest about the loss of religion in public life see it in places where it most likely never was. So even the loss, or the fact of the loss (whether there ever really was this time when we were “more Christian” that we have been slowly or quickly sliding away from since 19XX or 18XX or 17XX) is a matter of the personal feelings of the person least likely to trust objective sources. So it is that Maryland is named after the Virgin (even though its not), the Founding Fathers were Christians (even though many or most weren’t), Bibles are illegal in schools (even though they’re not), etc. The sky is falling, and we need our Mommy, the state, to hurry up and protect our religion before it withers and blows away like a dried up leaf under the pressure of all the nasty secularists and atheists and non-Christians who just live to kill us and are waiting for the proper legal sanction (sure to be granted any day now, since we are now apparently living in an anti-religious society) to do so.

It’s a scary world out there, in some people’s heads. 🤷

According to this website –
msa.md.gov/msa/mdmanual/0…html/name.html
Maryland’s name has nothing to do with the Blessed Virgin.

Quote:
Maryland’s name honors Queen Henrietta Maria (1609-1669), wife of Charles I (1600-1649), King of Great Britain and Ireland, who signed the 1632 charter establishing the Maryland colony.
Yes, and, uhhh, for whom do you suppose the Queen was named in honor of?

Her refusal to give up her Catholic faith alienated her from many of the people and certain powerful courtiers such as William Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury and Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford. Charles, on the other hand, had definite leanings towards Catholicism…”

(( .and sorry for the dangling participle up there. ))

:shamrock2:

No it wasn’t. It is true just like St. Paul, Minnesota, along with the hundreds of St. cities. Maryland was named after the Virgin Mary no matter what you say.
Well, OTCA, you are now officially “caught” in your stretching the truth to suit your way of thinking. This is from the OFFICIAL State of Maryland website (for link click here). The state website is here.
Maryland’s name honors Queen Henrietta Maria (1609-1669), wife of Charles I (1600-1649), King of Great Britain and Ireland, who signed the 1632 charter establishing the Maryland colony.
Queen Henrietta Maria was the daughter of Henry IV of France (1553-1610) and his second wife, Marie de Medici (1573-1642). She also was the sister of Louis XIII (1601-1643) of France. Married to Charles I at sixteen, she had nine children, of whom three died in infancy. In 1644, in danger because of civil unrest, Henrietta Maria left England for France. Her husband was beheaded at Whitehall in London in 1649. Henrietta Maria died in 1669 at Colombes, near Paris.
After restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Henrietta Maria’s son, Charles II ruled Great Britain and Ireland from 1660 to 1685. Her son, James II ruled from 1685 to 1688.

This picture hangs in the Maryland state capital, OTCA. Sorry.

I just wonder what would happen if all christians stop buying during christmas? since christmas time is the biggest time to buy and fill the packets of those who want to deny it.

:signofcross: :signofcross:
If all Christians stopped purchasing gifts during Christmas, then maybe we’d see Christmas be re-transformed into the holiday it’s supposed to be: THE BIRTH OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST. I think this would be a wonderful idea, though I know you mentioned this tongue-in-cheek.

You seem to think that acknowledging other holidays in some way denies Christmas. How is wishing patrons “Happy Holidays” denying Christmas?

I didnt say they are denying Christmas. it just seems to me that Christmas is a celebration about our Lord Jesus. why hide it?

it seems to me because of others religion, we cannot say christmas anymore. which is sad.

did you see about the movie coming up on christmas day? something about killing of the spirit. it seems pretty scary to me.

well. corrrect me if i am wrong.

Love and Peace of our Lord be with you.

I was in the mall the other day and the employees said “Happy Holidays”. I responded “You mean Merry Christmas, right”? One employee said “We are told to be politically correct”. I simply said, “Well, you can learn to be politically incorrect too.”.

I get very upset when these things happen…😦 **
holiday is a contraction of holy day, which of course is from the catholic term holy day of obligation. christmas(s) is a holy day of obligation.

so…happy holidays to you and yours!

** How come in a democratic and Christian United States, Nativity scenes and public prayers are banned?
How come seventh grader Amber Mangum was forbidden to read a bible in the school cafeteria during her lunch period at the Dwight D. Eisenhower middle school in Prince George’s County, MD?
How come British Airways worker Nadia Eweida was fired for wearing a cross?
What led people into such “Christianophobia” and “religionphobia”?

Hi

With the advent of Second Coming 1835-1908, all religions stand revised, so there won’t be any religion free (i.e., without religion) society. In fact religion would be stregthened as he has not only given the claims but also the reasons from the scriptures of the world. Of course everybody is free to have a religion or not to have a religion.

All religious scriptures of the world form one universal scripture of every religion as in origin they were truthful Message revealed by God Allah YHWH Parmesher for the guidance of humanity. The message would be the same; no different logically.

Thanks

There is a nativity scene in our courthouse square. And there will be a prayer at the basketball game I attend tonight.

Already dealt with. School policy is clear, as found in the Prince George’s County Public Schools handbook: “Students may read their Bibles or other scriptures, say grace before meals, and pray before tests to the same extent they may engage in comparable, non-disruptive activities.”

I thought you were asking questions about a democratic and Christian United States, not Britian?

Maybe you need to lighten up and realize that
  • the United States was not created as a Christian nation, and is a Republic, not a Democracy
  • the Church ministers and witnesses AGAINST common culture and not for it
O+

It ought so to witness - in practice, it tends almost always to re-inforce the USA’s real religion, which is the USA. This is state-worship, new-style - & pagan to the core 😦

Faith in Christ **destroys **earthly securities - it does not re-inforce them. It does not fit into society, because Jesus did not: it’s utterly wrong to make Him into a ultra-con capitalist - He was opposed to these things. As for being a family man - forget it ! If He were born in the USA today, you can bet your life that what happened to Him first time round would happen again: the religious types would hate Him like poison, forget their quarrels, gang up against Him, & make very sure that He was gassed or electrocuted.

The same sort of thing would happen anywhere - it happens each time someone who does His Will is stepped on by the official religious types, who ossify His message with their orthodoxies that make Him safe for society. He was not.

So who is Maryland named for? Is the state of Maryland wrong?
I see you are still on this Maryland thing. Truth is it was named after the Virgin Mary. Like it or not. Anyone can tell you anything. No one will admit this but in a book I have which I need to find it and I will get back to ya…after I show you ,do you promise to move on and start a problem somewhere else?

That is just in your area with the Nativity scene. you need to wake up here and smell the secularism. The little girl was FORBIDDEN to read the bible. Why would you come up with these rules of the school when it isn’t so?
Furthermore THIS COUNTRY WAS FOUNDED ON CHRISTIANITY, read your history books. Even Christopher Columbus WAS A CATHOLIC who gave communion to his men before he set sail, and named his ship after the Blessed Mother the Santa Maria, (Saint Mary).
In my court house square there is a very large Nativity Scene. Prayers are said before every governmental activity and before every sporting activity. The local members of both political parties start their meetings with a prayer.

Prayer lead by teachers during school time is not done but that is nothing new. Children can say grace before meals and any other time they wish as long as it is not aloud in the class room.

You need to check out your sources and name the school and state where the child was forbidden to read the bible during recess or at lunch.

I also lived in Southern California and there was a display of various religious symbols in front of our civic center. There was a five pointed star, a menorah and a crescent moon. Perhaps it would be appropriate for you to ask your city leaders why there are no religious symbols in front of the civic center.

Quite frankly, I don’t think these symbols mean a darn thing. It is more important how you observe this holiest of times rather than get so upset about how others observe it or not.

This is **Christmas. **The birth of Jesus Christ. A federal holiday. There should be no other “religions” putting up symbols at this time, especially a crescent moon…give me a break…🤷

Since holiday decorations are put up long before December 25, it is quite reasonable to see symbols of other religions who have holy days during the period.

There are no other “Holy” days…what don’t you understand? Hanukkah, everyone still works don’t they, nothing Federal about that, Crescent moon? Won’t even go there…CHRISTMAS IS THE ONLY FEDERAL HOLIDAY IN SIGHT. Get it? Birth of Christ. People had better accept this because they are in total denial.

So whether or not a day is Holy is determined by whether or not the federal government recognizes it by giving everyone a day off? Sorry, but that is ridiculous.
