I have not seen a pious-looking altar server in the NO, girl or boy for that matter, for many years.
Come to my Church and you’ll find 6 - 8 boys on the altar all looking very pious. I also remember attending a Mass one time in a neighboring diocese when the priest was very meticulously cleansing the vessels when the altar boy dared to look at someone in the congregation. The priest gave him a nice little rap on the shoulder without missing a beat. You can be sure that all of his altar boys are pious.👍

I’m happy to hear it. Would that it was like this everywhere, but my suspicion is that it is less likely than more. All I can say is that in my parish, the “servers” look just like the title suggests, that is they look like bored waiters/waitresses, which it seems their function has pretty much been reduced to.

As an altar boy, I would never have dared that since that would have freaked me out with standing-room and balcony-filled crowds we used to have at our pre-Vatican II Masses. Besides we were instructed never to turn our backs to God. Even our turns and movements were designed to avoid that from happening and were thoroughly rehearsed besides the many Latin responses we had.

For what it’s worth, I would vote for a return to male only altar servers.

Female servers may not lead to female priests. But, it can and does in some cases lead to feminist discontent and some people leaving the Church.
Agreed. However, the Church’s intent was not to lead women/girls into error. What leads all into error, discontent, and leaving is a selfishness that goes unchecked.
Take the Blessed Mother for example. She could have run around saying “Hey! Look at me, I’m the mother of the Savior of the world! Aren’t I wonderful.” However, she didn’t. The same with female altar servers, male altar servers, extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist, lectors, ushers, janitors, etc. As long as we are given an environment to form our conscience correctly and do not act upon selfishness, then we do not fall to error.
The Church did not make a mistake. However, I hold myself accountable to educate female and male altar servers so that neither of us fall into error.

I think that was a completely unintended effect of NO.
Children are much less likely than adults to succumb to self-importance. So all roles at Mass, except for that of the celebrant himself, should be given to children. The servers should do eveything the priest doesn’t, including handing out communion if there is an extraordinary need.

Goodness can easily be misrepresented as girly. So Mass must be a boys’ thing, for that reason alone. There are also deeper symbolic reasons why the Eucharist must be served by males. God like male sacrifices.

However we shouldn’t criticise the little girls themselves for acting as servers, obviously.

What is the training like for most altar servers. At my church we were told that because of the fact that military members come and go so frequently that female altar servers are allowed.

At our church the training was less then a few hours, maybe one and a half hours. Are servers supposed to get more training?

I’m a convert so the only altar servers I’ve seen are at my parish.

1 Corinthians 14:34
women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. 35If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. 😊

Just to clarify “I am not a man.”:o
yeah thanks for explainin that…sometimes i read things paul said or parts of the bible and think what rubbish… i always hope that secular people dont ever read parts like this as i sometimes am embarrassed when i cant explain them within the context.

I really wish that more people understood that the bible-like any book- was supposed to be read as a whole. So many mistakes are made when verses are taken in isolation to the rest of the bible.

No need for embarrassment. State the passage in Latin and it probably wouldn’t offend anyone. Just a thought. 🙂

“Rubbish”? Are you saying that you know better than St. Paul?

I think that she was talking honestly about her feelings and didn’t mean to negatively comment on St. Paul.

A lot of Paul’s teachings have been twisted to sound much more antifemale then he was.

Your funny, Even Mary spoke at the temple. She also spoke at a wedding. My wife can speak to me at church, home, or in bed. Why is it disgraceful for a women to speak? That’s silly:D

lol don’t get into that trap lol… when I read some passages in isaolation, or some statements etc etc, we all have our own opinions and feelings about them, as i’m sure you do…hence why i said ’think what rubbish’…

no apologies for that one PopeN 🙂

My wife can speak to me at church…
IMO, there’s already too much talking by everyone in the church. It is quieter at traffic jams in many cases. 🙂

I agree that it should be Altar Boys rather than Altar servers.
I used to be an altar server, and I was going to be the first female pope, by my reckoning. I knew all the words, the moves, etc. In my mind, since I already knew all that (and quite a bit more about Catholicism than my theology teacher), I was all set. It was just that darned “no women priests” rule.

I’ve changed since then (obviously), and I think all male programs are the way to go. Unfortunately, my generation is the product of the poorly catechized products of the inception of V2. sigh I have been arguing this very topic with people my age, and only 3-4 of us out of the 25 or so people in the convo support male-only programs. Those against them are women, and a man or two.

Our parish is like a catacomb before mass. Feels rather empty. The silence is not always golden. I can’t imagine the followers of the Lord never spoke around him. They talked and eat with him even after the Resurrection.
