Abortion Automatically a Mortal Sin?

ADDENDUM TO POST #73:

You stated the following:

Again, “full knowledge” DOES NOT mean “knowledge that an act is sinful.” Knowledge of, or at least the capacity to know, right from wrong is universally available except where reason itself is discerned; so where the truth of it is not immediately apprehended it can only be because one failed to exercise reason. Rather, “full knowledge” means “knowledge of one’s participation in a sinful act.”

1859 Mortal sin requires full knowledge and complete consent.** It presupposes knowledge of the sinful character of the act**, of its opposition to God’s law. It also implies a consent sufficiently deliberate to be a personal choice. Feigned ignorance and hardness of heart133 do not diminish, but rather increase, the voluntary character of a sin.

[CCC 1859, bolding and underlining added by this poster for emphasis]

The Church does NOT agree with you. I recommend the CCC; although I have now run across an ambiguous statement and the index is absolutely awful, it is a good guide. What it states above is true. It is God’s Truth as taught by the Magisterium - the teaching authority of the Church. In it Rome speaks and it really is a slam-dunk. I hope you are not trying to place yourself above the Magisterium!

Yes I know you know the needed aspects for committing grave sin (it was a general post to the thread for all)…
Then perhaps it would be a good idea to post it to all instead of just to me.
Peace be with you! (and again sorry for anything amiss -such as miscommunication)
I appreciate the apology but I have the feeling that you have no idea what you did that insulted me so much. And although I pray for charity I must admit that the thoughts going through my head right now are not charitable in the least. I feel like my posts have been ignored and that you have hit me with a filibuster and would continue like that old character Columbo until I threw up my hands and conceded just to get it over with - even though my concession would be a lie.
Have a great rest of the week and a most blessed Lords Day!
No comment. Sorry; I said my thoughts are not charitable right now. It is difficult sometimes for me to forgive. And I will not lie to you even if it makes you happy.

And where reason is functional and not impaired, lack of knowledge is NOT an excuse.

Reason is capable of discerning moral goods. It exists for that reason. Aristotle did it centuries before Christ came along.

Failure or refusal to do one’s due diligence in discerning the moral character of a certain course of action is culpable.

You are correct that I did think I was insulting you or anyone in this thread. I have stated such. I have sought to bring light to the matters at hand…not insult 🙂

But again I am sorry for anything amiss…

Why would you insult me? Why even admit it? And why do you admit that I’m correct that you thought you were insulting me and then flip-flop in the second sentence? Please don’t try to insult me and admit it and then say you have not sought to insult.

Your post makes absolutely no sense!

You’re correct. It was not directed to me. I’m sorry. Please accept my apology. 😦

Nice side-step. What you’ve written has nothing to do with what I posted from the CCC as it conflicts with your statement in the post to which I responded.

I will be happy to check your link when I have time. In his blog Jimmy answered a question I had and I appreciated the time he took to do so (it was about worshipping Mary and archaic language used in New Advent - I believe I’ve mentioned that site before in this thread).

But I have to point out that Jimmy is not the Magisterium or part of the Magisterium and as far as I know did not contribute to the CCC. He’s not even a bishop.

OK - I’ll let you get away with it…this time. But I’ve written your user name down in my little book and there’s a black check mark next to it. You only get three and then…well, I wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise. 😃

I want to apologize. I’m not usually like this. I’m trying very, very hard to be charitable. But two of my neighbors have been belting out obscenities, using the worst words possible and the name of Jesus and it has hurt and angered me and I don’t know what to do. I can’t get away from it unless I’m inside my house and I’m trying to build a shrine to Mary in my backyard. I pray and it doesn’t stop. I don’t want to take it out on you. I want to be a saint and to help others be saints. I have a predicament that is only going to get worse when the weather warms. The things that are said are worse than anything I have heard before. And after Mass, if I go to where the faithful meet, one of the people who says those awful things is there (he’s not a practicing Catholic but his Mom is so he goes along, missing Mass but helping afterwards).

I didn’t know it was affecting me this badly. I guess it’s because evil is so pervasive.

Accepted 🙂

Very unhappy situation…

I too am very sensitive the abuse of the Holy Name of Jesus.

Well keep praying for them --“Praised be the name of Jesus -Lord have mercy”

This is true. I also doubt it’s very common, at least outside the Third World. Even so, at that point the mortal sin is on the parents. So it’s still always a mortal sin, in that the burden must always be placed on someone – but it’s not always on the woman who gets the abortion.
Actually, there is a thriving human trafficking business here in the US, and the girls/women are forced to become prostitutes, and are forced to have abortions if they become pregnant. PP is complicit in these crimes - they will not report such things to the authorities.

I loathe PP. A few years ago I was at a gas station and looked up and there it was in a fairly new strip mall - a PP “clinic” here in my very little town; right on the main street (which happens to be US 101, which traverses most of the west coast of the U.S.), while the Pregnancy Counseling Center is forced to hide because of threats.

I wish Abby Johnson luck with the lawsuit but it’s difficult when the president seems to have the success of PP as his most important goal.

And my representative sends me silly letters saying he agrees with me when I say that no federal dollars should be given to organizations like PP. I think he knows that PP is actually federally funded.

Ooops, sorry - I went off on a tangent there.
