again you refused to explain or give examples you are working on the because I was told so reasoning you cut me down say I am out in left field yet have no backing to anything you state, and
and yet you say I am out in left field, because you have no explanation my responses were directly aimed at your responses yet you chose to not post them, at least I had the courage to post your postings with my responses

oh and read a book written by a man and call that proof or law??? ohhhh boyyyy

John,

At this point, I have told you all my reasons and have given you valid reasons. There is no reason for me to retype everything that I have already posted. If you have a problem with the Church’s teachings on ABC, then the burden of proof lies with you to refute her claims.

My backing has been the Roman Catholic Church, the Theology of the Body and the Good News About Sex and Marriage based on John Paul II’s Theology of the Body.

Don’t sit there and tell me that I do not have the courage to post responses to you. I have done so and at this point I am finished trying to post replies to your erroneous claims that you have no basis for. Again, the burden of proof falls on your shoulders.

What is official teaching about oral and other non-vaginal forms of sex? Specifically, such types of sex when a couple is practicing NFP?
This is the original post for this thread. If you have anything enlightening that you would like to add to this, then please do so, if you want to debate NFP, the time has passed for that in this thread.

saying its incorrect is as incorrect you gave one example then went off on new lengthy ABC,why not cover several varieties? oh because i was dead on with at least 8 different pills…
one of the most popular contains 7 active pills and the rest have other ingredients that help your skin, and they use that as a selling advertisement as well, anyways off topic again
Name that pill please. Tricyclen comes to mind since it is marketed to improve acne. If you are thinking of Tricylen a woman takes 21 days of active pills.

Is this something you know 100% for sure or just something you are posting??because thats a pretty big statement to say all who use are that way…

I see divorces on both sides of the fence and i see 50 yr reunions on both sides of the fence as well.

and In case you think differently I am not an ABC fan but i am also not a NFP fan either I believe they are as bad as each other.
with few exceptions,
matter of fact I see NFP couples as far less open to life than ABC couples esspecially some of the ones on here whom always are saying its more effective than the pill,
I know priests whom say NFP is the hardest part of a catholic Marriage and is also one of the biggest causes of a divorce in a Catholic marriage, and they generally say those whom really try to push NFP on others are either extremely happy with the results or its the old misery loves company thing,
now the writers of the premarriage classes say that hanging the roll of TP on the roller wrong is the biggest cause of a divorce but who knows anymore, they come up with millions of reasons for divorce label each the “bigest cause” yet it all boils down to communication…

sorry got side tracked there…

anyways if you like abc and are happy with it so be it if you like NFP and are happy with it so be it, but each side has to quit this stretching out of how great each is, neither is reliable to 100%
calling NFP a sacrifice is one of the most bogus things I have ever heard in my life its pure selfishness, a selfishness that takes a lot of valuble time to make happen, and sorry but keeping charts everyday, making sure of discharge, taking temps etc and doing this dang near everyday of your short life is NOT being open to life, I know people whom spend less time eating weekly

My normally useless 2 cents
I’m sorry but I have finally lost a lot of respect for your point of view.

I have met many couples and many priests. I have never heard anyone say that NFP causes divorce. Your presentation of a priest’s perspective on this is highly suspect. Even though I have encountered priests who are pro-contraception none has ever said NFP is a factor in divorce. People who have trouble with abstinence in NFP also are angry at it post-partum and during difficult pregnancies or injury. They have a mentality that more sex is the answer to their problems.

You have basically presented me two options in your theory. Even considering my serious health concerns I can either have more pregnancies than my body can handle (no abstinence) or I can have no pregnancies (total abstinence.) You have condemned periodic abstinence.

These signs are written on my body! It is only through mankind’s selfish sinfulness that we almost lost our understanding of them. Sorry to inform you, once I knew what the signs meant they are very easy to interpret. I can wake up in the morning and know my temp has shifted even before I take my temp. I plan to teach my daughter everything about how the beautiful design of her body works. My son will also know the ins and outs of God’s beautiful design. My husband and I plan to teach them about the beauty and sacredness of the design of sexuality.

Which brings me full circle back to the reason for this thread. * Each and every* sexual act must be open to procreation. No action rendering it impossible is within God’s plan. That goes for the infertile, menopausal, and currently pregnant. “Recent” science has confirmed I can’t get pregnant while 30 weeks pregnant and has explained the scientific reasons for it. Man has known that since the dawn of time that it is impossible. It is only through understanding the design of fertility that we now know why.

Each and every act is a renewal of our marital vows. Even if I had gotten a hysterectomy before I married my wedding night was still open to life. Each and every act must be objectively procreative even if it is subjectively non-reproductive. Talk about the “fertility police.” Your theory has just informed my husband and I that every time we intentionally engage in the marital act while I am not fertile we are sinning. So the last six months of this pregnancy we have been in a state of sin. Good to know.

Sorry to all if I have been uncharitable here or gone off half cocked. I try very hard to stay on topic, but sometimes one topic is because of another.

Sorry to all if I have been uncharitable here or gone off half cocked. I try very hard to stay on topic, but sometimes one topic is because of another.
Actually Deb your response is not half cocked or uncharitable
and you know how I truely feel about the whole thing, Yes I have made it appear i am feeling differently but the difference is with how people are responding,
you have always answered questions I have posted with as much explanation as possible, what I was trying to bring out in my responses was that Just because some people use ABC it dont make them less open to life than someone using NFP for the same reasons, many here feel that because they use NFP they are exceptionally fine, NFP can and is abused by many you know it as well as I,
as far as the priests go they see ,hear and deal with things everyday, you know as well as I do I have difficulties expressing things in print as they should be,
after rereading my post I should have stated that they say many of the participants of NFP that get divorced claim that is the reason, if i could still edit that post to correct I would.
I see it as a cop out when you try to blame any one thing for a divorce,
I am divorced after 18 and a half years of marriage, I could easily blame my exs drug problem and lack of faithfulness and constant lieing on the divorce but it took much more than that, and although many divorced people wont admit to it I am as much at fault as my ex, I put that in the original divorce papers and also on the nullity papers as well, it was 50/50 just like everything else.
the real blame for the divorce and I say its the same thing with almost all divorces is communication breakdowns/failures.

Now back to the original things here I have used NFP, and ABC in my life as well as nothing at all, all with the same success rate.
I truely believe God will not ever give you more than you can handle, It was one of the first things I was taught when I started the RCIA program, and I think it was also once I grasped it the thing that made the biggest difference in my life,
Yes I get depressed have been so esspecially the past several months thats a whole other story in itself but I have handled it
hence that never being given more than you can handle thing!

I guess my biggest pet peeve about nfp right now is I know 2 couples that use NFP because they say its within “Church teaching” to use" neither couple wants kids they detest them,
then they come right back and talk about how great they are because they are open to life, then will add that if they get pregnant they would have an abortion, thats not open to life.
thats sidetracking, and it really struck a nerve with me.and got me seeing how the Church teaches use of NFP on a more daily basis, how others advertise its use, then when getting on here and I see people talking about it and using the same wordings yet cannot or will not explain how they get to that opinion, I know its only because its how they were told, they do not truely see what the term “open to life” really means, I know many people using NFP because of medical reasons, yet they would love to have a child, these people are truely open to life yet are being denied for reasons beyond our understanding,
thats why I state many of the things I do about NFP not being open to life, Many people are so particular about the accuracy of charting ,temps, discharge because they do NOT want in any way shape or form what they term as an unwanted pregnancy,

My belief is this in short, if you have relations with your wife ( i am a man) or if your a woman and you have relations willingly with your husband, then you should relize that each and every single time you do you are getting pregnant,( dont count obvioulsy if already pregnant) and you do so with that knowledge then you are open to life even if a pregnancy does not happen.
therefore there should be no such thing as an unwanted pregnancy or a “boo boo” or a “failure”

I hope that makes a lil more sense now!!

John

John,
It does help that you have clarified some yet I still disagree with your conclusion.

Those couples you have mentioned using NFP because they detest children are using a moral means with immoral intent. Their intent does not change the means. Just like the contracepting couple who has moral intent in wanting more children but cannot for my same reasons. They are using an immoral means with a moral intent. We as humans must judge a means as moral or immoral. We must judge an intent as moral or immoral. What we cannot judge is a person’s personal state of sinfulness.

Both situations described above are immoral, objectively. Whether or not any of these people are culpable in sin is not ours to know or judge. They probably are and confession is recommended.

When you lump NFP with contraception you have just put *me *into the above scenarios. You have said that I am a contracepting woman with moral intent. Do you really want to put this very happily pregnant woman who is struggling every single day to even function in the same category as those who detest children? The Church has stated that contraception is intrinsically evil. I agree with the Church 100%. Contraception, which means “against the beginning” or “against creation” is intrinsically evil.

Yes, people abuse NFP. That doesn’t make NFP immoral. I would have stood and applauded you had you called those NFP abusing folks on the carpet. Did you? I would have.

As I said in the point of this thread in the first place. Now that I am pregnant can I just indulge in any old sexual practice I want? Why or why not? Is there a design and sacredness to sex or not? Does our subjective infertility change the design of marital love? I am infertile for three weeks a month. Do I have to try to conceive to engage in the marital act with my husband? I have been infertile for 6, almost 7 months. I will probably be infertile for the next year from breast-feeding. Since I cannot conceive must I abstain? What if we intentionally abstain during perceived infertility? Am I closing the door to God?

The short answer is that there is a design and a purpose to the marriage act. Either that rule from God always applies or it never applies. The Church just speaks the Truth that God has given her. She is after all, the Bride of Christ. We know in marriage, “two become one.”

John,

I posted earlier but I think it got lost in some of the more heated arguments.

Have you read any of the books based on Theology of the Body?

Are you saying that many of the statements made by others based on TOB are not logically sound?

Are you saying that you believe that any act of sex can be an act of love?

Are you saying that some people that practice NFP to avoid pregnancy are just as guilty of selfishness as those using ABC?

No I have not I have my reasons for this which I wont go into.
Are you saying that you believe that any act of sex can be an act of love?
actually not even close.
Are you saying that some people that practice NFP to avoid pregnancy are just as guilty of selfishness as those using ABC?
exactly with emphasis on that word “SOME”

I also feel may people posting have no clue what Open to life entails, they merely use the term because they see, hear and read it so much that its an automatic for anyone using NFP

I relize everyone I have a very hard time expressing things in typed words, I forget to add words sometimes that are key to the point i am trying to make, for this I appologize.I definatly make a better speaker than a writer…

Many people think i have come to my opinions half baked or without researching, for the record I guarantee I have more research hours and time spent on this particular topic than most.
over the past 7 months alone I spend 8 and 3/4 hours at work, and about 9 hours or more a day on my computer, I know I should have better things to do but right now I dont for my own reasons, anyways most of my computer time is spent researching or posting on this forum.
everyone is entitled to thier own opinions right or wrong
something I need to work on as well as many others…

John

And P.S. John. Yes, the couple who is contracepting with an intent not open to life is worse off than the couple who is using NFP while closed to life.

The contracepting couple is guilty of immoral means AND immoral intent. The NFP couple is guilty only of immoral intent. One has two sins to repent of the other has only one. It is easier to soften the heart of a couple who is using moral means than the one using immoral means.

That has been one of the amazing blessings of NFP. I have often seen couples who had their hearts softened because of the abstinence in NFP. It is much harder to get free of contraception when one is closed to life too.

In order of ease to soften hearts it goes:
NFP couple closed to life.
Contracepting couple open to life when trying to conceive.
Contracepting couple closed to life.

The design of marital love is what is hurting in these situations. The NFP couple is more likely to believe that there IS a design that must be followed. The contracepting couple has more trouble grasping the design even if they do love children.

No I was not trying to label you with anyone else

as for "calling them to the carpet ohh did I ever. but you know what they constantly stated? that they were being open to life because they used NFP, that they did “their sacrifice” every month by abstaining, and that they were within Gods and the Churches will, I asked them to show me any scripture showing it was within Gods will, I asked a priest the same thing, every Church ruling is based on bits and pieces of scripture except NFP, I have spent at least 9 months trying to find any backing at all for or against NFP in scripture, asked Priests etc noone seems to know, the answer i get is always the same the Church allows it.or that the church has the authority to allow it if they choose, ok fine what else are they allowed to "allow if they so choose, trust me I havnt approached this half baked.

I see a lot of things posted to promote NFP such as the term “sacrifice” How is monthly abstinence a sacrifice? when the reason for the abstinence is and I hate this term with a passion successful
would it then be also considered a “sacrifice” to conceive and have a child? afterall raising a child is life changing.
and for more than a few days a month.

I see terms such as “giving to each other totally” and thats not entirely true either, I have seen posts on this forum where the couple actually sleep in separate bedrooms so they are not tempted during fertile times,

and then the one that really confuses me the most “within Gods will” How do we know this for sure, what if a particular month you were supposed to conceive and that baby was a potential prophet
that could have “saved the world” we would never know,
wouldnt Gods will be better achieved if you had gone ahead and had marital relations and if you didnt conceive then it truely was Gods will or am i looking at it too deep here, to me if it was truely Gods will thats how it would work out.

maybe I feel this way because of how things have happened in my own life who knows, I have been on the trying to conceive end
and after 2 yrs nothing then when least expect it poof.conception takes place. to me that was truely Gods will being done.

John,
I understand about difficulty with typing. I have disgraphia. I discoverd this because DS was diagnosed and surprise… he’s like his dad. It takes me forever to post something.

I guess I ask about TOB because it takes one through the logical progression of it all. Not all things Catholic are based on scripture. I too, struggle with “interpretations of interpretations of translations of interpretations.”

Are you sure you do not need to read TOB to get more information about this subject?

Good job on calling them on the carpet. I truly applaud you. Maybe you planted a seed that will take root, who knows?

Let’s talk about this sacrifice part. That is the part that is most relevant to this thread and I think is screaming to be addressed.

In my case we KNOW that abstinence is a big sacrifice. If I had the health for it I would have kids as often as I could. As it is I DO have have kids as often as I can. When my health is strong, BAM, you bet we want to conceive. When our current family is stable enough to welcome a new child, you bet!! So far that includes one step son, 13, one son almost 3, and one daughter in utero. We were not financially stable for DS age 3 in part because of child support payments for dear step son age 13. We took the hit and conceived anyway. God has provided.

So the people who are sleeping in different rooms are not protecting themselves from conceiving a child. They are protecting themselves from lusting for one another. God has called them NOT to conceive. So similarly to an unmarried couple they cannot have relations. Since they are already intimately acquainted with each other, they may struggle with lust. No child should be conceived in lust. God accepts the child as perfect regardless of conception circumstances. But do you really want to be the parents telling a child that they are a product of lust? I know many adults who are the products of lust. No one even needed to tell them. They have always known. It changes how they view themselves.

Personally, I was a surprise. Scientifically I was a “user error of the temperature rhythm method.” (1971 precursor to modern NFP.) I always knew I was a surprise, yet I was never termed an accident or failure. My parents went to Yosemite and the changes affected her cycle. They were open to God’s plan in having relations knowing it could result in a child. It did. ME!! Nature changed her cycle, God made the design, but they engaged in the marital relations.

So what if they had had oral sex during that time instead? (Not that they ever would have.) They were pretty sure they were infertile. I wouldn’t exist and yet they got the sexual pleasure at the expense of creating a new life, me or otherwise. So then you would ask, yes, but what if they abstained that night? A-ha! If they had abstained was I supposed to exist as me? Probably not. That kind of thinking of “could be the next prophet” is predestination thinking. I didn’t exist until the moment they conceived me. Someone cannot be destined for anything if they don’t exist in the first place. (Now the argument does work in reference to abortion. If the child exists then abortion takes away God’s plan for him or her.)

So where is the sacrifice in NFP? It is not in what some pro oral-sex people have claimed here. The sacrifice is, “we can’t have a baby now.” That is a HUGE sacrifice. That is why the Church condemns all sexual activity devoid of procreation. That is why oral-sex is forbidden even during infertile times. IF we are going to engage in sexual relations the chance is still there. God doesn’t break condoms. God doesn’t change cycles. That interferes with free will. God allows nature to take its course. He didn’t hand pick the egg or sperm either, but He sure as heck already knows which ones are uniting.

A really good book that helped me to understand the difference between God being all-knowing and predestination is called, “Trustful Surrender to Divine Providence.” He allows condoms to break. He doesn’t actively break them. He is present in everything except participating in our sin. It is our free will upon which we are judged. He allows bad things to happen for His greater plan. (The saint-author of the book gives an excellent example of God allowing us to stub our toe as a reminder to be more aware of our surroundings.) Nothing happens without Him knowing and serving a bigger purpose. We have until the moment of death to stub our toe and repent of our sins. I call that a very just and merciful God!

EDIT of previous post: “He didn’t hand-pick the egg or sperm” should be read more as “He doesn’t interfere with His design in uniting a particular egg and sperm.” They unite by His design with His full knowledge and consent.

I suggested Song of Songs because it is from the Word of God, not the mere teachings of men, such as John Paul II. Also, Song of Songs is the most sexually explicit book in the bible, yet does not give a list of “do’s and don’t’s” regarding marital sex. More specifically, it does not suggest that those who particpate in oral sex “miss out” on something in heaven as Little Deb suggests.
It doesn’t suggest those that participate in lots of things, will “miss out” on something in heaven, but the rest of the Bible sure does. It actually says, we might miss out on heaven all together. Of course that’s always a problem if or when we take the Bible and interpret its books, chapter or verses out of context or without full understanding of the rest of the Bible and how it all works together to define God’s plan for us.

Yes John Paul II was a man, and you my dear are just a woman. Why is your interpretation of Song of Songs, so much better than his? Why is your own personal interpretation or mine or anybody else’s so much better than his? To insinuate that John Paul is not as capable of deciphering, or understanding what the Bible teaches, so that he can share with others in the Church is well uncharitable to say the least.

If the Bible was so easy to understand and interpret, there wouldn’t be 30,000 plus denomination all teaching things just a little differently.

I wondered if anyone had any comments or guidance for me. I’m 26 and my wife is 27, we have 4 children. I’m sure you’ve guessed already but, we don’t use birth control.

I know we could abstain etc but I do think it’s all part of a healthy marriage. The thing is, I’m worried we’ll end up having lots of children!

My wife and I already have all the answers for our friends who use various forms of contraception… But, inside I kind of agree with them.

Hi Jon,

Welcome to CAF! 👋

I would recommend you start a new thread about this, as this one started four years ago and was only “brought to the surface” by a spammer.

I’ll just say this for now: natural family planning, which does involve periodic abstinence when your wife is fertile, fits into God’s plan for marriage quite well and does not involve making it somehow “unhealthy.” The problem is when we, as sinful people, try to distort sex into making it into something it is not to satisfy our own selfish desires.

You can also check out the following books: Holy Sex by Dr. Greg Popcak and Good News About Sex and Marriage by Christopher West . They discuss Catholic teaching about sexuality very well and helped me enormously to understand not just the “what” but also the “why” and a little bit of the “how.” For more information about NFP specifically, you could contact the Couple to Couple League.
