It is said that when St. Francis of Assisi visited the Sultan of Egypt he admired the 5 times daily call to prayer.

Muslims are very religious people. What can we learn from them?

They have good posturing for fostering respect and obedience I guess. Face to the ground and all.

A similar call to prayer exists in the religious life, but 7 times a day or so I believe.

Fasting yes. Catholics need to fast more in my opinion. I need to work on it myself. 🙁

This is my opinion.

For example, for a bit of pocket change, I work once or twice a week at the grocers. We have Muslim families who come in - some wear a hijab, and some just a pretty scarf. They say God Bless you, thank you, and they often offer the pray for us when one of the employees is having a particularly bad time.

When the butcher has to go an extra mile to get halal meat for them, they pay extra and are more than happy. When they’re fasting, they’re never down-and-out, never sad, and always appear to smile and are extremely kind. The religion itself is filled with heresy and false teaching, but at least we can learn this from them. Filial love, respect, and simple kindness and humility.

A chap I know, his family is originally from Turkmenistan. They’re a family of progressive Muslims, but he had to move out at 16 years of age to live with his sister. Their family always supported them as they were quite successful, but wanted their children to learn independence on their own as efficiently as possible. They still ate together for family meals, went to mosque, etc… all as a family. But, private affairs remained just that - private affairs. They placed an emphasis on individual freedom, and when my friend told them that he was Christian they did not make a fuss. They still invite him to mosque, which he goes to occasionally to see old friends and family.

On the other hand, I know a family who disowned their son because he married a white girl, a Christian, even when she agreed to raise their child as a Muslim. He left his family and is raising their child at a non-denominational mega church type thing.

yes we can learn more prayer and fasting from them. Also to dress more modestly especially when going to church and even outside of church. I don’t mean for women to cover there whole face and body but to be more mindful

I once heard a Muslim say: I don’t believe in the real presence of the Eucharist because if God is truly there I would be worshipping so reverently (I think meaning lying down on face etc) but I don’t see anyone at church treating it with that much respect.

Politeness. The Muslim girls in the school where I teach are all very polite and seem to have much less issues with authority than some of the Irish kids. The others could learn a thing or two and make my job a lot easier.

We don’t need to learn anything from them. Catholics need to follow the tenets of the Catholic faith.

Oh and about the 5 times a day prayer thing, we Catholics have 7. Just a little better 😉

I think we can learn a little about self-sufficiency from the muslims. They have been out in East Liberty for many decades selling incense and their “Final Call” newspaper on the corner where Target is at- since before Target was built. That takes a lot of dedication and commitment to the idea of making your own way.

Nothing. Catholicism possesses the fullness of Truth, so any truth they hold, we hold, and anything else is falsehood.

Anything you can learn from Muslims you can learn from the Church. None of their examples need to be followed, even the good ones, because what they possess that we can emulate, we already have in the example of Christ and the saints.

And as for the five-time call to prayer, we already possess seven. So we beat them by two.

And I can tell all of you, for a fact, that not all Muslims roll out prayer rugs five times a day, so the idea of Muslims praying five times a day compared to us does not hold water. Just like us, they live their prayer lives according to what is possible in their state of life.

Nothing. Everyone saying how they pray is awesome but it was said to “close your door” while you pray. Not show it off and chant like an idiot.

No I don’t like them. They think a child molester is the messiah. It’s disgusting

One of the practices that I like is how they fast during Ramadan. (I think that’s what they call the month) Apparently they would fast from sunrise to sundown. I think it is good spiritual practice especially since it is Lent.

Not the messiah but a prophet. Still, I do agree that it is disgusting.

Can’t really say bad thing about another religion but they believe my God is not a God. They think that we worship three gods.

As for themselves, for every good ones, there are bad ones. Just look at Europe and countries where they came from. Lots of undesirable things happen there and they happened because of people who hold the same religion. So there is really nothing very special about them that we do not have.

They are people just like us. There’s is nothing in their religion that is an improvement from us. If they seem to be good neighbors and so are we. If we are bad people ourselves perhaps it is because we do not live out our faith enough, not that our religion is inferior or does not teach us to be good people.

God bless.

No they don’t. They think Jesus is the Messiah. And Aisha was married in absentia to seal an alliance, and the marriage wasn’t consummated until puberty. This was a common practice all over the ancient world. Even for Christians.

Absolutely. Some Muslims will blow themselves up for God, and Catholics won’t even fast for an hour.
