SuscipeMeDomine:

A simple correction may be in order, but do you have to be so harsh? Could you re-read your post and imagine someone saying this to you?..

… I’m sorry, but I think I detect a note of this :tsktsk: in this post. You might what to remember that printed text carries no tone, and repetition has a tone all its own, esp. when others are saying the same thing to someone, and that person already feels he’s been lectured on that.

We don’t know if his pastor had chosen this publisher, or if some parish liturgical committee (becoming all too common I’m afraid) had chosen it. You’re making an assumption, that, while perfectly valid for your parish, may not be valid for Malkin’s parish. Remember, per the Vatican guidelines, we may not refer to the Celebration Holy Eucharist as either a “Communion Meal” or a “Communal Gathering” or the Altar as a “Table”. In this case, it doesn’t matter what’s written down, the terms are forbidden by the Vatican, and we really should obey the Pope if we know about the instruction…

This is something Malkin clearly needed and still needs to take up with his pastor, because there are “Catholic Presses” which are putting out materials we really shouldn’t be using in any of our Liturgies or in any Teaching of the Faith. In this case, the problem is that Malkin hasn’t consulted his pastor and given him a chance to deal with the problem I object to the fact that Malkin didn’t take this issue up with his pastor and allow him a chance to remedy it…

…If someone came to me and pointed out that the books the Parish Liturgical Committee had bought had those problems, I would mark the corrections in the Sanctuary Copies (per the GIRM & Liturgium Anthenticum) and have him read the corrected text - Then buy new books from a different source. There are plenty of Catholic Presses (such as Ignatius and Adoremus) putting out orthodox materials so one shouldn’t need to use materials which refer to the Holy Eucharist as a “Communal Meal”.

As I said, in this case, it doesn’t matter that the words were written down, they’re not the proper or allowed words for referring to the most Sacred thing we as Catholics do. I don’t think Malkin could have read aloud what he said he saw on the “prayers for the People” on Easter Sunday in good conscience - He knows that it’s wrong to refer to the Divine Liturgy or the Holy Eucharist as some sort of “Communal Gathering”. and, I think it’s wrong to chide someone for refusing to go against his conscience, esp. when his conscience is in conformity with the Law of the Church.

I think we finally have something we can agree on. The attitudes of both don’t sound so good. Problem is that we have only one, and bagging him over the head with a frying pan when he needs a gentle tap on the shoulder just might be an overdo…

I think the cavalier treatment of our Lord’s Body and Blood and the willful changing of the words to the Agnus Dei Malkin described seems to come from a rather lax attitude towards our Lord’s Body and Blood that’s been allowed in his parish, and the bit about calling the Holy Eucharist a “Communal Gathering”, the Sacrifice of the Mass a “Communion Meal” and the Altar a “Table” are all symptomatic of that.

Malkin’s parish may have some serious issues, and they shouldn’t be downplayed because some here think Malkin has an attitude problem.

Your Brother and Servant in Christ, Michael
I did ask our Pastor about why the Choir adds words to the “Agnus Dei” and it is not being sung or said properly, he said “Talk to the choir director.”. Are you getting the point?

The problem with the Agnus Dei is that a non-Catholic composer did a Mass setting in which he changed some words of the Ordinary of Mass and everyone swallowed it hook, line and sinker. His setting has become one of the most popular ones today. You’ll find it in the CBW III, the Canadian national hymnal. Once it’s in a hymnal that is promoted by a national conference, what hope do we have of being listened to when we say “But Fr., the words of the Ordinary of Mass are not supposed to be changed!”

I hope I have correctly attributed the text
Yes. So I see that even in the two forms of the Latin Rite, in which “Pro Multis” has two different meanings “for many” in the “E.F.” and “for all” in the “O.F.” you are saying “in your own opinion” the correct translations of “Pro Multis” is “for all”.
Re-read what I wrote, because that is not what it said.
I even *told *you I evaded the question…
(The (unasked) question I answered was: *Has anyone ever produced a (liturgically) authoritative translation of *“pro multis” as “for all”? )
They do because they can get away with it. …
Some criminals break the law and get away with it – It does not follow that they have the authority to do so.

Does a priest have the authority to alter the set text of the Mass?

Perhaps I am being over-Socratic in repeatedly asking the question. It is not meant to be a trick. Fine, I’ll start – My answer to this question is:
No, a priest does not have the authority to alter the set text of the Mass.
Do you agree? Say so.
Do you disagree? Fair enough, what is your answer then?

tee

A priest when celebrating mass need to follow the canon. He has no right to change the words of the canon. He can in some precise moments of the liturgy use his own words but should be very careful not to use different words espercially during the concecration.

I agree.

And FTR:

I would not ordinarily translate *pro multis *as “for all”.

But the ICEL, the English speaking conferences of bishops, and the Apostolic See did not consult with me on the matter. “For all” being the currently offered, approved, and promulgated text, unless and until that changes, that is what an English speaking priest should say.

Something happened to me after Mass this morning. I am a Lector at my Parish. I was confronted by two of our choir members about the way I lector. Let me tell you about myself. The reason why I became a lector was I was tired of seing lectors dress and perform sloppy. Some lectors you can not even hear them at all. Some do not dress properly. Being trained as an Altar boy I thought I could do a good job and bring respect back.
My brother, i too am a lector. I don’t read to show others how to do it. I read to God, for God, and for His word. I don’t genuflect for the sake of others, to show them how to give honor and respect. I genuflect because i fear the Lord, and I must show Him due honor.

The day i do it to show other people “how good i can do it” is the day i will stop.

The mass is not about us; it is about God. I applaud your efforts, truly, but you must reconsider your approach. It is hostile to the authority of the priest, and therefore hostile to the mass. Sometimes i make a gaffe with grammar or wording on the intentions, but i never change them.

I seriously ask you to consider your intentions, and prayerfully reflect on them.

May the spirit of God be with you,

-revelations

Great!

Now: Do you, Malkin71, have the authority to alter the set text of the Mass?

tee
I am not altering the text of Mass. I am standing up to moderinsts, liberals and feminists who believe the Mass and Church should change and be up with the times.

You are right! Odd isn’t how the the translation is different. The more reason why it should never have been changed.

The omission of words from the Lectionary text is an alteration.

SuscipeMeDomine:

Perhaps Malkin.'s parish doesn’t have a sound system - I’ve read a few times in a parish without a sound system, and it takes some work to get one’s voice to the back in such a way that everyone understands the lesson…

… and, Even with a sound system, many people don’t speak loudly & clearly enough, or distinctly enough to be understood. In fact, at my local Roman Catholic parish, I’d say that 1/3 of the readers have that problem. and that’s a problem, as we’re supposed to listen to the Lector and not read the Reading from the Missalettes.

And, In this case, Malkin made it a point to say that people who had complained that they couldn’t understand most of the Readings were able to understand him when he read the Lessons.

SuscopeMeDomine, the instruction to Reverence the Tabernacle ONLY at the beginning at end of Mass is wrong. I don’t know who told you and the rest of your parish’s Alter Servers and EXTRAORDINARY Ministers of the Holy Eucharist that, but, according to the instructions in the GIRM, it’s simply incorrect…

… Please bear with me for a moment - Who’s present in that Tabernacle? Just a few pieces of unleavened bread? or, The King of Kings and the Lord of Lords? Just a representation of our Lord? or, The Creator of the Universe and the One who redeemed us by His blood? If it’s just a few pieces of unleavened bread and a representation of our Lord, there’s no need to reverence the Tabernacle at all! but, If We’re walking by His seat every time you pass by the Tabernacle, then shouldn’t we kneel in homage at the King of Kings and Lord of Lords who brought us into being and then redeemed us by His blood? When you watch the Masses on EWTN, Do you them bow? or, Do you see them Genuflect before our Lord?

I think you might want to talk to whoever it is that gave you that faulty instruction…

Regarding the Petitions - We aren’t allowed to refer to the Alter as a “Table” or the Holy Eucharist as a “Communion Meal” or “Communal Gathering”. Not only is this dogmatically and theologically incorrect, this is prohibited by the GIRM and other Vatican documents. The Holy Eucharist is the Holy Eucharist, and the Sacrifice of the Mass is the Sacrifice of the Mass is the Sacrifice of the Mass. It’s not a “Communion Meal” or a “Communal Gathering”. I don’t know whose writing the petitions in Malkin’s Parish, but it’s not an accepted source. In those conditions, I’d probably allow him to change the wording…

%between%

… What bothers me is, why is his pastor not taking the responsibility to make sure that the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament is appropriately reverenced (that includes not allowing anyone to access the Tabernacle without first genuflecting) or that changes are not made to the Agnus Dei or other Liturgical Readings (Prohibited under the GIRM)" Why isn’t Malkin’s pastor not making sure that prayers come from accepted sources and that they only use accepted language when referring to the Holy Eucharist or the Sacrifice of the Mass? Why isn’t he making sure that this Mass is done reverently and according to the rules and norms established by the GIRM?

Here are some sets of Accepted prayers from the USCCB
usccb.org/prolife/liturgy/intercessionsforlife.shtml
usccb.org/liturgy/katrinaprayers.shtml
usccb.org/vocations/prayereng.shtml

SuscipeMeDomine, it’s not our job to judge someone’s intent or whether or not someone is being “prideful”, and it’s not the “Liberals” job not to judge whether their brother in Christ is being “Prideful”. That’s up to Malkin’s Spiritual Director. The two things I see to correct is that Malkin isn’t saying “And Sisters” (That’s in the LITURGICAL TEXT as an introduction to the Epistle and may not be changed, per the GIRM), and that he hasn’t consulted his pastor about the problems I listed with the “Prayers of the People” and instead has acted unilaterally.

I do think Malkin needs to talk to his pastor about his concerns, particularly about the casual manner in which some are treating our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, and before he makes any more changes to the “Prayers of the People”. Right or wrong, the pastor has to have control over his parish as he has responsibility before God for the people of that parish. If he’s wrong, Malkin’s job is to figure out a way to tell him the truth in love and to let him know that he’ll support him in making whatever changes need to be made…

That’s harder than unilaterally changing the “Prayers of the People”.

Your Brother and Servant in Christ, Michael
Our Parish has a newer sound system. The problem is when people speak they do not adjust the microphone nor do they know how far from the microphone from which to speak. Also, a lot of the lectors male and female speak in a lower tone. When I took Public Speaking classes in college The teachers went over posture, voice tone, etc. during the course. I am not bragging about my classes. I am just saying from the background I got from the class and the former Pastor of my Parish whom you could hear loud and clearly throughout the whole building. I was using those guides to help me when I am speaking at Mass.

It is true the majority of the people at Mass do not Genuflect at Mass. I make sure I do. If people think I am flaunting my “Badge of Traditionalism” So be it!

The petitions come from a book. When you read them they sound very Protestant like.
No offense. Like what is stated above. The Tabernacle contains the “PHYSICAL PRESENCE OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST”! If we can not pay respect to him by correctly correcting the “Communial Meal” or “Gathering” to “The HOLY SACRAFICE OF MASS” then we fail to be called Catholics!

Exactly. So what is the average person supposed to do? Are you disobedient if you report Cardinal Mahoney’s liturgical abuses?
Ockham:

NO ONE is ever disobedient for reporting liturgical or other abuses to the appropriate authorities. Just remember to report REAL ABUSES and not the “Ticky-Tack Fouls” & “Matters of Taste” I often see posted on Catholic Answers…

Part of the deal is knowing when the cry, “Foul!” so those who have to read your reports know they can take you seriously.

Your Brother and Servant in Christ, Michael

Exactly! It is ok to reinvent and change the Words, I.E Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us. Prince Of Peace you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us. Savior of the world Grant us your peace. This is all fine and the majority takes it in and has no problem with it. But, the few who question it are told to “get over it”. If you try to be reverent you get attacked.

This is why I am taking a stand! I am tired of all the experimenting with the Mass. The Holy Father should make it manditory that all prayers in the Mass be change and said in Latin and that when the prayers are fixed their fixed!

When the words refer to Mass incorrectly It should be done! Also, when the petitions say “brother and sister” I say “brothers and sisters”. In the actual readings I.E. the actual text, if it says “brothers and sisters”; I say; “brothers and sisters”

Malkin:

Christ is Risen!

30 years ago, when I was at a LARGE Parish, I actually overwhelmed the sound system singing the “Alleluia” - Man, did I wake people up! This NERVOUS Sri Lankan priest had asked me to do it, in order to distract people for a few minutes, and did it ever work! 😛

This is an important question - How much of what you’ve posted here have you discussed with you NEW Pastor? and, Have you tired to teach some of your fellow Lectors how to annunciate and how to deal with the microphone?..
Another Question - Are you genuflecting, etc. in order to “flaunt your badge of Traditionalism” at Mass? or, Are you doing it “as unto the Lord” and “in order to instruct the brothren”?

I think I made it clear that the Vatican doesn’t allow the Holy Eucharist to be referred to as a “Communal Gathering” - That’s in the GIRM. The GIRM also prohibits us from referring to the Lord’s Body and Blood as a “Communion Meal”. If someone (or a committee) in you parish has elected to purchase or print books that refer to the Holy Eucharist or to the Lord’s Body and Blood in those terms, you really do need to talk to your Pastor. Consistently referring to the Holy Eucharist and to the Lord’s Body and Blood in those terms would cause the lack of reverence and have the effects you’ve reported, and there’s nothing you can do to reverse it short of concerted action by your Pastor.

The one-time substitution with the correct terms isn’t going to even begin to do the job, esp. as you don’t have the authority, and aren’t perceived as having the authority, to do what you’re doing.

I realize you will have some difficult decisions to make if your Pastor decides to do nothing about the lack of reverence towards the Lord’s Body and Blood or about these cockeyed books. But, if you go to him and he either decides not to hear you out or he decides to do nothing, at least you’ll know you that this is a losing cause.

When the seriously popular Pastor of my parish got involved in serious misconduct and was refusing to do most of the duties of a priest while involving himself in a cult, I corresponded with my Bishop and searched for allies (and found 2). As this Pastor had set Brother against Brother and Sister against Sister, I had to try to comfort several members who were really hurting, while reporting details to our Bishop no one should have to report about his Pastor (& hearing details back I can’t repeat here).

Finally, after almost 5 months, he was defrocked and left the Church, but the damage was done, and the congregation hasn’t recovered in since, and, because real reconciliation was always put off, the injuries are still there, just below the surface, and those who needed to learn that no church can allow itself to become factionalized ("see 1 Cor 1:10-15), and that those who disagree with them are still their brothers and sisters in Christ, didn’t learn the lesson.

As I’ve heard of other situations, it was, and still is, a mess.

Your Brother and Servant in Christ, Michael

When I am lectoring ,I try to speak loud and clear so the the people in the last row can hear. I do get comments from people that I am the only one that they can hear in the last row. I always wear a suit and tie. If we would have Surplus and Casocks I would wear them. I make a point to strike my chest during the Confetitor and bow during the words of “By the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary…” I genuflect when Approaching the Altar towards the Tabernacle. Now during the petitions I make changes when they refer to the Altar as a “Table”, and when they say a “Comunion Meal, or Communial Gathering” I change it to the Holy Sacrafice of Mass. I DO NOT CHANGE ANY of the WORDS of SCRIPTURE! I read it VERBATIUM. I do say This is the Word of the Word and forget to say Sisters before the second reading. This is what some liberals have a problem with me.

Two members of the choir apprached me and questioned me about it. One of them always walks up to the Altar opens the Tabernacle and stands by the Priest during the 'Lamb of God" while everyone else is kneeling.

I explained to them I am a Conservative Traditionailst who does not like the Liberal influences of Feminisim and Modernism. They said the Blessed Mother said it was ok and that I should talk to people who are more Different minded and I would see. I also mentioned that they should not change the words of the Agnus Dei and add words to it. I know this got under their skin.

I mentioned last week Our Priest skipped the Homily on Palm Sunday. They just ignored it. All I am trying to do is have a proper O.F. and stop all the nonsense that goes on. Not to brag, I like to mention I am always saying a couple of Rosary’s at the Fatima grotto in front of our Church and before Mass. I am also a member of the Pittsburgh Latin Mass Community. When I do go there I am at peace and feel at home.

Who is wrong? Am I doing something wrong? I do get compliments too.
I believe Jesus had a word for you HYPOCRITE. You can’t say you are more “holier” then others at this mass because you still use some of the old traditions from days gone by. no one not one of us i don’t care if he was visited last night by Jesus himself is holy. We are all flawed Humans. You are bragging God doesn’t care how many times your at the fatima shrine. Clearly you are one of those snobs who thinks there holier then thou because there butts are so far shoved up their faces they don’t know right from left.

Could you give citations? I am unaware and would be happy to know them, thanks.

Malkin:

It’s not OK to reinvent the words and change the words, and Canada has problems of its own, partly because the Canadian National Council of Bishops was simply disobedient for several years. They even went so far as to refuse to publish and teach Humanae Vitae when it Pope Paul VI Promulgated it in 1967.

I’m sure that Council is still getting over that problem and needs all the help and encouragement for obedience and submission we can give them. that’s one reason several of us joined in the Letter Writing Campaign on behalf of Bishop Henry of Alberta a couple of years ago when he was being harrased by the “Human Rights Commission”…
Exactly! It is ok to reinvent and change the Words, I.E Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us. Prince Of Peace you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us. No one should be told to “Get over it” on either side, and that includes the “Progressives” when they’re wrong and trying to distort the Teaching of the Church. At the same time, we need to work on our timing and our approach so that those we approach will listen to us and will be in more of a mood to accept what we have to say. As St. Paul said, We’re to “Speak the truth in love”. That doesn’t mean collaring some poor soul as he’s hurrying from one place to another - It might mean volunteering to give him a ride or buying him lunch or asking if we can make an appointment to talk later…

Ask yourself if those who are “attacking you” are attacking you for “Being reverent” or if there is something else such as Sinful Pharisaical Pride - Please make sure you do a good examination of conscience to make sure the problem isn’t “On your side of the street”. If that’s not the case, PRAY and ask QUIETLY if there isn’t something that’s bothering them when you do what you do. PRAY FIRST!

Remember, It’s not our job to “make a stand”. If your pastor refuses to do the Liturgy in conformity with the Norms as set forth within the GIRM and in a manner consistent with the guidelines set by the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments, and your Bishop Ordinary refuses to enforce those, go to your Latin Masses (where you’ve said you feel at home) and/or find a parish where they are worshiping the Lord in a more reverent manner.

Unless you have reason to believe your Pastor will back you on this, leave - It’s just not worth the hassle and heartache.

Your Brother and Servant in Christ, Michael
