Rome, Italy, Apr 21, 2015 / 02:44 am (CNA/EWTN News).- A Nigerian bishop says that he has seen Christ in a vision and now knows that the rosary is the key to ridding the country of the Islamist terrorist organization Boko Haram.

Bishop Oliver Dashe Doeme says he is being driven by a God-given mandate to lead others in praying the rosary until the extremist group disappears.

“Towards the end of last year I was in my chapel before the Blessed Sacrament… praying the rosary, and then suddenly the Lord appeared,” Bishop Dashe told CNA April 18.

In the vision, the prelate said, Jesus didn’t say anything at first, but extended a sword toward him, and he in turn reached out for it.

“As soon as I received the sword, it turned into a rosary,” the bishop said, adding that Jesus then told him three times: “Boko Haram is gone.”

“I didn’t need any prophet to give me the explanation,” he said. “It was clear that with the rosary we would be able to expel Boko Haram.”

The bishop said he didn’t want to tell anyone, but “felt that the Holy Spirit was pushing him to do so.”

He started with the priests of his diocese, and then told participants in the April 17-19 #WeAreN2015 congress in Madrid, Spain. The event is being sponsored by the Spanish Catholic sister groups hazteoir.org and CitizenGo to gather ideas on how to preserve the Christian presence in nations where they are most persecuted.

Bishop Dashe leads the Diocese of Maiduguri, in northeastern Nigeria’s Borno State. In 2009, there were around 125,000 Catholics under his guidance. After a surge in violence from the Islamist extremist group called Boko Haram, today “there are only 50 to 60 thousand left,” he said.

Most of those who fled sought safer areas in other parts of Nigeria, he said. Some of the same families are now returning home as armed forces from Nigeria, Chad and Cameroon liberate their homes.

In 2014, Boko Haram became known worldwide when members kidnapped nearly 300 girls from a school in Borno State. On March 7, 2015, five suicide bombers killed 54 and wounded nearly three times as many in the capital city of Maidaguri, where the bishop lives and works.

The group has killed 1,000 people across Nigeria in the first three months of 2015, according to Human Rights Watch, which reports that more than 6,000 have died in Boko Haram-led violence since 2009.

Just last month, the group pledged its allegiance to ISIS – also known as the Islamic State – which launched a bloody campaign in Iraq and Syria last summer.

Meanwhile, Bishop Dashe has just completed a “consolation tour” to communities in his diocese, promoting forgiveness and continued faith. He believes he was asked by Jesus to spread devotion to the rosary in order to aid them as they do so.

“Maybe that’s why he did it,” said the bishop, referring to Jesus in his vision.

Bishop Dashe said he has a strong devotion to Christ’s mother, and that “I never joke with ‘Mamma Mary.’ I know she is here with us.”

And he is not the only Nigerian bishop putting the future of the country in the hands of Mary. The nation’s bishops’ conference has consecrated the country to her twice in recent years.

Bishop Dashe believes that one day his diocese will completely recover and grow thanks to her intercession.

“These terrorists… think that by burning our churches, burning our structures, they will destroy Christanity. Never,” Bishop Dashe told several hundred people from the dais of the #WeAreN2015 congress.

“It may take a few months or a few years … but ‘Boko Haram is gone.’”

He later told CNA that “prayer, particularly the prayer of the rosary, is (what) will deliver us from the claws of this demon, the demon of terrorism. And of course, it is working.”

There is great power in the Holy Rosary. Makes me think of the Battle of Lepanto, when Pope Pius V called all Christians to pray the Rosary, and the Islamic Ottoman Navy was destroyed, thus preventing an invasion of Southern Europe.

I personally believe there is a special place in Hell prepared for those who kidnap (and Heaven knows what else) 300 schoolgirls, though I do pray that God may have mercy on their souls.

I pray he is right and I hope he will continue to have a strong faith.

I also pray that God has mercy on them, but I highly doubt people who would kidnap young girls for the purpose of sexual slavery would be willing to accept that mercy, or kneel before the Christian God.

(Note, this isn’t saying that we worship different Gods, I acknowledge that we worship the same God. I just think their understanding of Him is so flawed that, once confronted with the REAL God, they would reject Him. I hope not, because I want salvation for everyone, but people who think God commands them to rape and murder innocent women and children might not be able to worship a God who condemns such things.)

No, but the Rosary can still defeat them.

I hate to sound like a pessimist here, but has the Rosary alone, ever brought down any real world powers before? For example, it seems like all the years of people consistently praying outside of abortion clinics, privately within their homes, and in church, has never had any real world impact in abolishing the practice of abortion, and in fact abortion numbers have grown and continue to grow.

As mentioned before, the Battle of Lepanto, where the Ottoman Turks were stopped at the gates of Europe, after having steamrolled everything in their path (including the last remnants of the Roman Empire). The success of the Holy League is directly attributed to the Rosary by Catholics.
and in fact abortion numbers have grown and continue to grow.
I am exceedingly glad to report this is not true at all. Abortion rates have actually been in a shallow but steady decline since their peak in the '80s. There are some states where few to no abortion clinics exist any more due to lack of business as well as common-sense legislation (such as making sure abortion doctors are, well real doctors with hospital admitting privileges) that Planned Parenthood cant or won’t abide by. A number of states are outlawing the most brutal forms of abortion outright. Even the pro-abort Guttmacher Institute admits that abortions are at their lowest point since 1973, the year of Roe v. Wade. Whether this is attributable to the Rosary can be debated ad infinitum, but it certainly could not have hurt 🙂

Not sure that is objective reasoning. Some pagans attribute thunder to Thor, but thunder can be explained with natural reasons that are objective. Is there a way to know that the success was directly attributed to the Rosary in an objective way?

Guttmacher may be making a political move and playing with the numbers there, since as we’ve seen, Catholic Spain amongst other once-Catholic nations, have skyrocketed abortion rates. And New York alone pumps out thousands of abortions daily, I recall. Not to mention all of the BCPs that act as abortifacents which are most prevalent today. Those are abortions too. The number is way up there in the billions and prayer hasn’t had any effect on this evil nor any of the other grave social evils of this world.

As grim as things look in the states visa vie abortion, from the eyes of a Canadian the success of the pro-life movement in the US is nothing short of amazing. In Canada, 2 of the 3 major political parties won’t allow their MPs to vote for pro-life legislation. A strong majority of Canadians (70% +) consistently favor abortion. Canadian University’s regularly censor their pro-life student groups (if they let them form at all). We don’t even have a law regulating abortion and even attempts at banning procedures opposed by the majority of Canadians (for example sex-selective abortions) gets shut down.

Contrast that with the situation in the States and you might begin to appreciate your own circumstances more. Is the difference due to the rosary? Well I know there are a lot of contributing factors but the fact remains that what you’ve achieved is nothing short of a miracle.

Prayer has a great good effect on a world otherwise in the hands of the evil one. The fact that you are here on CAF supports the power of prayer. You may be unsure, but you are here with us and we are all praying every single day for world peace, for the conversion of sinners and for mercy for all those who do not yet know, love and adore Jesus Christ. We pray a rosary a day for these intentions here in my community prayer group. The bishop is letting the world know what Jesus gave him as a weapon to defeat the evil of Boko Haram. Please join in the effort. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain my friend.

The problem isn’t in whether or not the rosary is an effective weapon, but whether there are enough praying people who are exercising their faith. God doesn’t want to spoon feed us but rather to encourage us to stand up and exercise our faith on our own.

It would probably not work for you because of your lack of faith. That is not a defect in the weapon used but a defect in the person attempting to use the weapon.

Remember Austria, thousands of them prayed the Rosary when they were occupied by the Soviet Union, then one day they left voluntarily, when did the Soviet Union ever leave a country peacefully?

I missed that. When was Austria occupied by the Soviet Union?

Remember the peaceful EDSA Revolution where sisters where praying Rosary in the streets

Our Lady has told us of the power of the rosary in some of her earthly manifestations to humanity. Since such events are both celestial and infrequent, I tend to place great confidence in each and every word that the Mother of God Chooses to utter. I personally perceive words transmitted by Our Lady to mankind through her apparitions as being extensions of the gospels. She is speaking for Christ.

The power of the Rosary is certainly an under-used, and very effective weapon in our earthly battles against Satan. So, using against these murderous, delusional heretics seems a wise and prudent tactic.

Remember, the mighty Soviet Empire was no match for Holy Mary Mother of God, so perhaps we should all heed the Nigerian Bishop’s call to action. I, for one, am going to hit the beads…and hit them hard.

Rosary is the most powerful prayer because Mother Mary is the most powerful intercessor.
And we can include as many intentions in a Rosary because Mother Mary can accommondate all the needs. So pray the Rosary and send up all intentions and praise the Lord.

If by objective you mean absolute proof, then no, I would say that’s not the case, in regards to the Battle of Lepanto. But the Papal fleet and it’s Catholic crew, along with Pope St. Pius V, believed that their victory against the Muslim fleet was due to our Lady’s intercession. The Catholics were far outnumbered by the Muslims.

Here’s a Catholic website with an article on the subject:

roman-catholic-saints.com/our-lady-of-the-rosary.html

Pope Pius V sent a Papal fleet to meet the large Muslim fleet which was poised in the Mediterranean sea bordering the Christian counties. The article states that…“Before and during the decisive battle, the Christian world led by Pope St. Pius V, invoked the Blessed Virgin in a special way for her assistance, and they were convinced that the victory at Lepanto was a result of Mary’s help. The Pope proclaimed a special feast in honor of Our Lady of Victory, to be celebrated on the first Sunday of October.”

St Padre Pio also believed that the greatest weapon against evil is the Rosary. When he was ill in his last years, and needed help to dress in the morning, he would say to the his brother Franciscans…“hand me my weapon.” What he meant of course, was his Rosary. He carried it everywhere.
