**There were way too many posts to go through them all. For those I did read I have this to say:

Many people seem to get caught up into the “way” the Liturgy is celebrated. The very bottom line…as long as matter and form are honored…

It is still JESUS…is that not what the Liturgy is all about? Receiving Jesus - the rest is a call to prayer.**

Ok, I guess people still would consider the wacky funeral of a beloved family member fine because it is valid. How about this…everyone seems to agree that we are present for the sacrifice. Now, transport yourself back in time when Mary watched her son being tortured, and most likely could barely stand from all the anxiety; Jesus was feeling every single lashing and the air ripping through every wound and scratch; those that loved him witnessed unimaginable horrors; those that did not know him were converted; those that knew of his crimes encouraged the beatings. Now, there is a group of people there playing Jimi Hendrix type songs in a Protestant flavor, and they are all clapping and dancing around. Some are dressed like clowns, others in mini skirts and heels, and others in gorilla costumes. Hmmm…that sounds very reverent and non-offensive to God, doesn’t it? I mean, its valid so its okay.

Are you suggesting that we should not be like Mary, staying and watching and following Jesus to the very end?

Did you really just ask me this? Do you not understand the point of my post? What I said was that masses can surely offend God, valid or not. How could we possibly take part in a carnival calvary when the sacrifice is such a big deal and deserves nothing less than sacred tradition? Liturgical abuse and seeing the mass as a meal really cheapens our Lord’s death.

I’m afraid that you are deviating from the original post when the OP said that what he experienced was not on the scale of a “clown Mass” etc. I can understand his frustration, particularly since he was grieving, but like Mary, he stayed, until the Mass had ended. I’m just asking, should we not be like Mary, and abandon Jesus because we do not like the way the Liturgy is done?

Perhaps the mass is abandoning Jesus with all the hand claps, focus on the meal over the sacrifice, up lifting pop tunes etc… Again, the mass is not for us to use as penance. We are not supposed to suffer during this time, as Christ is carrying all of our sins.

There were way too many posts to go through them all. For those I did read I have this to say:
You should really read the past few pages. Please! Especially the article I posted by the FSSP Priest.
Many people seem to get caught up into the “way” the Liturgy is celebrated. The very bottom line…as long as matter and form are honored…
A lot of people get caught up in the “way” we have to drive. As long as you can change gears properly it’s all good - do whatever you like. Drive on the other side of the road, go 200miles an hour, drive on sidewalks, never use indicators, drive while sleeping.
It is still JESUS…is that not what the Liturgy is all about? Receiving Jesus - the rest is a call to prayer.
Please read the FSSP article - skip the first half but the second half directly addresses this point.

An ex-Priest could say a Satanic Black Mass and it could still be Jesus. If what matters is only form and matter, then you could attend a Black Mass according to this line of thought. Right? Or perhaps we don’t even need a Mass! If it’s only about receiving Jesus and the correct Matter and Form of the Sacrament, we should just have a service where the consecration is done and we receive and then go home. You are reducing the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass down to the Sacrament of th Eucharist.

Read the article please 😃

OFF TOPIC
The bizarre leap some have taken into equating the OP’s liturgy with black Satanic masses, priests dressing as angels or demons during a funeral liturgy and playing circus music … and the like … is straight out of disneyland.

If you want to have a rational discussion with members who see through this agenda, please get back into reality.

Um. Who equated Satanic Black Masses with OP’s liturgy?

I made it perfectly clear - after, I believe, you asked me - that I was speaking generally.

If people say that all that matters is validity, they need to understand why that is wildly incorrect. Using a kind of reductio ad absurdum argument we show that surely validity is not all that matters. Not once have I - or the others - said that a Black Mass or Clown Mass is exactly the same thing as what the OP has described. In fact, I myself said a few posts ago that what the OP described was pretty minor.

Please stop misrepresenting my discussion here.

NewsTheMan NEVER did that. You are mis-representing what he said.

So now we argue about the argument?

It is still a broad leap into cynicism which devalues the opinions of some posters who pleaded for charity and tolerance in respect of these minor complaints that border on personal preference. You would have us swallow the camel, when the gnat is the only problem. 😉

Looking back, you are not the only one who veered off topic. We find posts that talk about robing in gorilla costumes and making the same giant leap to rationalizations that are not pertinent whatsoever. Morgan’s very first post as a new member at CAF was to make sweeping complaints about the NO. Not much has changed. 😦

He is critisizing that way of thinking! What he is saying is that if people don’t care about sacreligious happenings (And no, he is not referring to the OP’s Mass, but abuses in general), and only care about validity, then with that line of thinking it doesn’t matter how blasphemous a Mass is, that we should never complain because it is still a ‘Valid Mass’, and we should always ‘Offer it up as suffering’.

That is what he is saying. He is in no way comparing the OP’s Mass to a Black Mass because that would be outright sacreligious and sinful in itself.

So now we argue about the argument?
What is wrong with that? Your rolling eyes make it seem as if arguing about that is wrong. Again, if what matters is only the validity of the sacrament, then we have come a far way from authentic Catholicism and my reductio argument makes it clear why.

Huh? I am making general observations and a general discussion. So you admit that your post was a strawman and a misrepresentation of my posts? Can you not see the bigger picture here?

The bigger picture is that suffering minor abuses is not ideal or acceptable. Yes, in the short run while at Mass sometimes it is better to offer it up. But that cannot continue. Posters who say “well it is okay because it was valid” are doing people and the Church a disservice. Precisely because it is a valid Mass- that is what makes abuses (minor or major) not acceptable. Going on about validity is not the issue - the reductio argument shows that. The issue is what makes an authentic, proper Catholic Mass. There are objective standards and we must adhere to them. People act as if wanting a properly celebrated liturgy is an offense, or just one preferences amongst others. God deserves the best. Wanting that is not one preferences among others nor is it offensive.

Again, you must understand the context and point of those posts. Here it is:

Some say it is okay to play folk music, to dance around, to not follow the rubrics or the texts, to have a “light-hearted”, “youth oriented” liturgy. They say that it matters not what the Priest wears, or what the people wear, and that in some massively general sense “it is for God” so that makes it all okay. That kind of thing is directly opposed to Catholicism - and for a good, academic explanation of the extrinsic merits of the Mass read the article I posted. If one understands the Mass - that is, if one knows and confirms it to be a re-presentation of Christ on the Cross - then we can safely say that there are certain things which are appropriate and certain things which are not appropriate.

The objection then comes that what is appropriate is only a matter of opinion. So the response comes in two forms: firstly, Rome has spoken about what is and what is not appropriate. In her official documents and in sacred Tradition where through the ages we have never seen the likes of what we see today in many Masses. Secondly (and this is where the gorilla stuff comes in) if that were true just apply the principle in another context, namely, a funeral. Is it only a matter of personal opinion that a funeral is solemn and respectful? Or at funerals do we dress in whatever manner pleases us and play folk music and dance around? If not, why not? We see that it is a solemn moment. So how much more in the presence of God Almighty should we be reserved in such a manner? How much more when we recognize that the Mass is not about us or for us - it is about God and for God.

In fact, I find it rather scandalous to say “well it is okay as long as the Eucharist was valid”. I think that is a cop-out answer that betrays some kind of luke-warmness towards the faith.

Imagine it was your Birthday and I had a gift for you. It was a beautiful watch. In order to have this gift, I threw you a party. A bad party. One where you were invited but we put you in the corner, we played all the music you don’t like and we displayed the foods you hated. Right at the end I gave you the gift and dared to say “hey, this was all for you what is with that long face!” If you come out and said that the party was horrid would it be any excuse for me to say “Well, at least the present was nice!”. You would feel offended and sad.

An imperfect analogy - and no I am not comparing the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass to a party - but in my mind that illustrates the kind of point I am making here.

Thank you - you get it. Perhaps I am not explaining myself well enough here 😦

Still off topic, regardless. NOBODY has downplayed sacriligeous happenings. It was said time and again that the OP’s liturgy contained no abuses. To take it to this extreme and discuss flagrant gravissima abuses is material for another thread. Those coming in late, as jmjconder did, without reading the intervening posts, would easily assume that the OP’s post suggested “sacrilegious happenings” if they read only the last several posts.

Problem is, News… that nobody has said ANY of that, nor even IMPLIED it.
You are seriously misinterpreting others’ comments. I see that we are not able to have a rational discussion here, since you color others’ statements with sweeping judgments that were never spoken.

If I have misquoted anybody, I apologize. If you read over my posts I don’t believe I have done that. I was speaking - as I have said ad nauseam - very generally. Perhaps this was a topic for a different thread, and I apologize for taking it off track. However, threads develop sometimes and I thought it was getting into a good, nitty gritty kind of discussion. These are frank issues, and important ones. I take them seriously. I think a lot about them. I don’t believe I have been irrational. Nor have I taken anybodies posts and coloured them. If I have done that, that was not my intention, and I apologize. I thought this would be a great place to start discussing these kinds of things. Maybe nobody in this thread even thinks in the way that I have been refuting [though it seems obvious to me that some do]. That is fine, because I am tackling a certain issue or idea or sentiment that does in fact exist [on and off this forum].

It has gone slightly off topic, but it was thread development. To me it seemed to flow, but I have posted a lot and am probably letting myself off. Mea Culpa. If the Mods feel it necessary they can delete my posts or split the thread as they sometimes do.

Thank you for being patient Sirach, I enjoy your posts and you remain cordial and intelligent when getting your points across while which is more than I can sometimes say for myself.

NewsTheMan NEVER did that. You are mis-representing what he said.
Agreed. Perhaps you are the one with an agenda Sirach2, because you insist in claiming that more or less everything is ok as long as it in not explicitly forbidden. Our examples and logicial conclusion of where such reasong can take us (clown funerals, satanic mass, etc.) shows your argument is weak. I guess you don’t like that.

Well, a lot of threads here started about liturgical abuses (and no, not the OP’s Mass) seem to get replies telling the OP to be quiet, stop complaining, stop being concerned about the actions of others, and to offer it up as suffering, with only some responses telling the OP how to fix the problem. That is the position NewsTheMan is trying to critisize.

This is the problem with the way liturgy is understood today, that we choose what suits us best. Celebrating mass the way it was done for centuries has become completely irrelevant and many people don’t understand why tradition and continuity are important in themselves. When we cease to preserve our heritage and don’t understand its value, both spiritually and aesthetically, then anything goes and we get priests who entertain the congregation, dancing, bad music, improvisation. Most people who complain here about the way mass is celebrated do not discuss a clown mass, but this mediocrity and relativism.
