Almost walked out of Mass

Well, consideriing that you are only 21, which is light years behind me (LOL!) I am edified very much with your zeal for the liturgy. How I long for my grandchildren to catch the fire - even a small spark! I really think a separate thread would be in order here, because there is a distinct blur between offenses gravissima delicta which you began to discuss, and those which are not considered an abuse because they are lawful in the liturgy, but sometimes grate on certain peoplesā€™ sensibilities.

I appreciate the serenity prayer to, ā€œAccept the things we cannot change, change those we can,ā€ and wisely learn to recognize when grumbling is not effective.

I understand your frustrations with this particular Mass. I can see from the examples how the noises and distractions make it difficult for you to concentrate in prayer to God. Sometimes writing about things that bother us as you did in this post can help us get the frustrations out of our system. It has helped me before when I experienced the same frustrations.

Remember, that Jesus is the Head of our Church. In the end Jesus wins. So whenever you are in this situation in the future offer up all your frustrations to Jesus after you receive Holy Communion.

Sometimes things are not what we would prefer them to be. You stated you do not regularly attend this church but attend somewhere else where I will assume you have an experience that supports your unity with Jesus during the Mass.

We have one such liturgy on the 4th Saturday of the month, and I usually avoid it. OTOH, our choir is top-notch and sang for the Pope recently in Rome. When they are not scheduled, we just have an organist with a cantor for the other three weeksā€™ vigil masses.

Please donā€™t judge the Church or that parish by one isolated experience, for you do not know the details. It would be a good idea to call the rectory in advance when you do not have a bulletin and ask if the vigil mass is a youth mass.

@Sirach, I was wondering the same thing. Our parish also holds a youth Mass on the 1rst Saturday of each Month. I have not attended, but have heard the band and singer sound good. To others who are not familiar with the band, I can see how this could potentially be a distraction. Just my thoughts.

Tolerance and charity has been ludicrously elevated , in some circumstances, to the point where people are not told what is expected of them.

Iā€™m glad that you didnā€™t walk out of the mass. Iā€™m an Eastern Catholic who sometimes attends the local latin rite parish when itā€™s not feasible to get to my Byzantine liturgy. I know going in that the music will be iffy, the homilies might be so-so, the congregation might be irreverent. However, I know that so long as the priest is validly ordained and the consecration is valid, Christ is present on the altar and that I can receive him in the most blessed sacrament. At that moment in time, all the rest is window dressing. If this was your normal parish, it might be wise to look around for something that fits your spiritual needs. But given you were visiting, just remember that Jesus was present in the eucharist.

The Church has a beautiful tradition that can be found in many parishes ordinary form or extraordinary form. And you can take time to visit one of the many Eastern rite parishes that make up the Eastern Catholic Churches to see the majesty & beauty of our Divine Liturgy. Just remember that:

Christ is with us!
He is and always will be!

I, too, am glad you didnā€™t walk out of the Mass even though it was disappointing to you. A few months ago I quit my parish of 5 years, along with my choir participation of 4-1/2 years. I had been back to the church for 5 years and I remembered it as being more reverent. So after visiting another parish more and more, I switched.
I attend my new parish gregorian chant mass every time I can and even during a daily mass the homilies are really good, sometimes great. My new parish is the seat of the archbishop, so I guess they have to be consistently as top notch as they can. Now when I have a question I can be connected with a canon lawyer, no less! šŸ˜ƒ (although that only happened onceā€¦the pastor is perfectly capable, I just didnā€™t want to bother him when he was sick and busy.)
In any event it sounds to me like you were pretty much blindsided. These things can happen. Hold fast to what strengthens your faith, hope and love and donā€™t be discouraged.
