To all,

I haven’t been that out of touch with what is going on in the SDA church, mostly because they still send me letters from time to time.

I received one in July from Pastor Hal Mayer of “Keep The Faith” minstiries, with the beginning salutation “Dear Fellow Seventh-day Adventists”, and it went on to talk about Pope Benedict XVI and his visit to America and how it is Bible prophecy being fulfilled. Here is the link to the same topic on their website:

ktfministry.org/ . Read the first article “Benedict Visits America and the World”

If you want a very clear well documented SDA view of Catholicism and the Pope, this article is a “MUST READ”.

You may find it interesting to know what is thought about Catholicism and Catholics.
Nice try Patrick; but I would also agree that people should check out the link you provided, with the thought in mind that the person in charge there is an independent ministry who does not speak officially for the Church; nor is his ministry approved by the Church.

Forum Members: you can compare official Adventist Church teachings here, with the article Patrick mentioned above. It is also worth noting, once agin that Patrick has ‘forgotten’ to add what your Catholic Church teaches about Protestants.

I would suggest too that “letters from time to time” does not put anyone in touch with a church to the point where they actually can be considered an “authority” of same.

Protestant,
You still didnt answer… again.
Haha… Protestant101, you crack me up.

I left the SDA Church in 2004… if the Church has changed sooo much in the last 4 years… that in and of its self would prove it wrong.

No… I keep up with Adventist literature, teachings, friends, pastors, etc… the doctrines of the Church have not changed. Since you have accused us of making things up. Let me ask you point blank. (or other Adventists)

Protestant101
A simple Yes or No.

Does the Adventist Church teach that:
  1. The pope will be the anti-Christ/beast of Revelation?
  2. The Pope will lead a union of Protestants, CAtholics and Governments to persecute those who keep the Saturday Sabbath?
  3. Sunday keeping is the “Mark of the Beast”?
This is what we have claimed the Adventist Church teaches… you claimed we were making it up and out of touch with the Church… Does the Adventist Church teach these things?

I suspect you were just as out of touch when you were a member; as you are now.
Then tell me what I am out of touch about… I asked you flat out questions about what the SDA Church believes…and you refused to answer… again.

Its easy to sit and tell someone they dont know what they are talking about… but you still havent told me what we are wrong about.

Protestant,
You still didnt answer… again.
What you mean my ‘friend’ is that I did answer; but you don’t like my answer, and that’s OK.

There are many holes in your tenuous claims about Adventist teachings - you really are out of touch with the reality of it all. I have decided not to even worry about your strident ‘theology’ regarding Adventists.

LOL, thats easy - you are wrong about everything!! But to be fair; I am under no obligation to answer any or all of your ‘questions’ because it’s not like you studiously answer all of mine either, is it?

Your anti-Adventist rhetoric makes you & Patrick look good to some I am sure; but not to all.

P-101, from where I sit, you’re on the ropes and reeling!

“Keep your hands up and protect yourself at all times!”

"Run, son. Keep moving until the bell! **

Protestant101,
I cant think of any questions that you have asked that either I, or another on the forum has not honestly and forthrightly answered. However, it appears that your either ashamed or embarrassed of your faith, you will not even confirm what your church teaches with a simple yes or no.

You claimed that we are out of touch with what your denomination believes… so I simply tried to clarify what you believe… now you refuse to even answer the simplest of questions. You accuse… but dont provide anything to support your accusations.

Hey, NOTE to the former SDA’s posting to this guy, I’ve figured it out!

My SDA relative’s church is SOOOO desperate for members, they’ve taken to dunking pretty much anyone who will agree that saturday is the right day to go to church and pony up some $$ for the collection plate on Saturdays. Agree to teach the kiddies or cut the lawn, and you’re golden. So maybe its possible Protestant101 really believes we are making all this stuff up, the new people at my mom’s SDA church would probably say the same thing.

After attending a potluck with my mom one day, one person twisted my arm about getting re-baptized (horrors! they understand so little about what baptism is and what it does) and rejoining the SDA church. I told them it was impossible, I simply did not believe adventist teachings and was happy at my own Church. So… they made the last ditch effort, and I quote : “it doesn’t matter what you believe, make your mom happy, get rebaptized and believe what you want.” I must have looked at her like she was some alien that crawled out of the bushes, because she backed off and gave it up.

This still blows me away. I remember the good old days of Adventism, when you had to sell your wedding rings (donate the $$ to missions of course), successfully quit smoking, give up bacon and other yummy (but unclean) animal foods, then MAYBE you’d be accepted for baptism. Of course understanding who exactly Ellen White was, or the Investigative Judement, or that the pope was the anti-christ, that could wait until after you were baptized. After all, don’t want to scare away the new marks (er… converts). Forget really knowing Jesus, that was secondary to having the right head knowledge about the right day to “keep” and not wearing jewelry or eating pork.

This may not represent a high mark in charity here… but consider this the frustration of some one that was fooled into becoming SDA - ONCE. They have to be absolutely totally nuts to think I will ever darken their door again.

Hey, NOTE to the former SDA’s posting to this guy, I’ve figured it out!
You haven’t really figured out much at all; you have been crying about this kind of stuff for over a year now that I have been on this forum. While it is understandable that you are telling what you think is “truth” because of your own personal family situation; it is untenable to consider the view point that your personal experience would characterize official Adventist teachings or practice.

One of the strongest points I can think of as far as why I attend an Adventist Church is that there are a precious few who really have the Spirit of Christ, and have been such an immense blessing to my spiritual walk, and my understanding of the Word.

I might add, that inspite of the insults; I have learned much, and been immensely blessed by my studies here at Catholic Answers Forums. I feel that I have learned much about the Word, and about your Church that I would not have learned otherwise. All of your challenges have only made me study more. 🙂

Oh yes, some of us have labels for each other, we believe you are very wrong on some points, and you likewise see us as just as wrong on other points. As an ex-member of mine or any other Church it can be hard to be sensitive to Christ and His Spirit within the group you have left, but I think there has to come a time when we mature enough spiritually to see that maybe we have not been very fair to some. (and yes, that goes both ways) 😉

Thankyou. I will add that word to the list; LOL when I have been here two years (a few months from now) I will publish the entire list for the enjoyment of everyone. I have to think of the right name for that thread…

101,

Once again, and this was posted by someone else, somewhere earlier in this thread or the thread “why is sunday instead of saturday the sabboth”, since they are the two I have followed and posted in predominatly. You ignored it before and you will probably ignore it now…but here we go again.

From the link you posted above, under the section titled “Fundamental Beliefs”, we find:

18. The Gift of Prophecy:
One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is prophecy. This gift is an identifying mark of the remnant church and was manifested in the ministry of Ellen. G. White . As the Lord’s messenger, her writings are a continuing and authoritative source of truth which provide for the church comfort, guidance, instruction, and correction. They also make clear that the Bible is the standard by which all teaching and experience must be tested. (Joel 2:28, 29; Acts 2:14-21; Heb. 1:1-3; Rev. 12:17; 19:10.)

I compared the article I posted with the site you posted. In the article I posted, the author quoted Ellen Gould White, “whose writings are a continuing and authoritative source of truth”. He quoted her quite a bit about the evils of the Catholic Church and it taking control of the political entities throughout the world, by first taking control of American politics; and then forcing everyone to worship on Sunday.

Those quotes were taken primarily from Ellen G. White’s book, “The Great Controversy”.

Are you saying that the content of the message from that independent ministry is in conflict with SDA church teachings?

or,

Are you saying that item number 18 The Gift of Prophecy, under Fundamental Beliefs, in the web site you posted might be wrong?

or,

Could it possibly be that what that independent ministry is teaching is in direct agreement with what Ellen G. White taught in “The Great Controversy” and other of her writings?

Have you ever read “The Great Controvery”? Do you believe what Mrs. White says in that book?

Of course these are rhetoric questions, becase I have no expectation that you will answer them. You will accuse me of somehow being mean to you and add that to your list for someone to see.

And now for a thread related question.

Amazing Facts is an independent ministry of the SDA church. Do they teach contrary to the SDA church teachings? Again these are rhetoric questions because you won’t answer them, but they are important for all who are reading this thread, because now I’m going to put some quotes and links to articles from the Amazing Facts website…for all to look at and judge for themselves. The articles and teachings of the SDA church and independent ministries speak for themselves. I have no dog in this race as to who believes what. I don’t care if people believe SDA teaching or Catholic teachings…but I do think it is important, at least, for Catholics reading this thread, to understand what the SDA church teaches about them via the prophetess Ellen Gould White.

Perhaps those interested would like to see an official statement of belief regarding what we teach about The Remnant Church, I think the article will explain a lot of questions. Our teaching is in line with the Bible re “antichrist” which is plural in the Bible. We teach (officially) that “the man of sin” is not an individual, but a system of religious belief.

Our belief re the prophetic ministry of Ellen G White is no worse than how you view your Pope. It remains to be proven that we are wrong. While I cannot speak officially for the Church, I have tried to represent what I understand.

“When Satan failed to destroy the church by violence, he resorted to a new strategy – he would join the church himself, and corrupt it from within.”

"The world staggered under the oppression of the Roman Church during the dark ages that followed. In her thirst for ever greater power and domination, she absorbed all other religions into herself and adulterated the pure doctrine of Christ with an amalgam of superstitions and heresies. This characteristic itself was typical of all the pagan nations, which by conquest perpetually added to their list of deities. Says Durant in The Story of Civilization: “There were gods who presided over every moment of a man’s life, gods of the house and garden, of food and drink, of health and sickness.” The Roman Church gathered these gods into her bosom and gave them saints’ names. Prayers for the dead, instead of ascending to Cybele were now offered up to the Virgin Mary. The use of idols and amulets was preserved, as were offerings of appeasement (penance and indulgences). The pagan kings were believed to be incarnations of the sun-god, and the Roman Church had its counterpart in the pope as the vicar of Christ.”

"The earliest Christians had denied all compromise with false doctrine and had gladly suffered horrible martyrdoms for refusing even to place a pinch of incense at the feet of pagan altars. Yet in just a few generations of time, a curtain of moral blackness shrouded the church. Ever anxious to assimilate and conquer, she integrated virtually every feature of sun worship into her own rites. To spite the Jews whom they hated and to accommodate the legions of sun worshipers that were entering the “faith” through conquest, church leaders very early presumed to transfer the sanctity of the Sabbath to the first day of the week. Sunday was proclaimed a holiday in honor of Jesus’ resurrection, a cunning perversion that eventually brought scorn upon God’s great moral law, the Ten Commandments. In time this master stroke also effectively obliterated the worship of God as the literal Creator of the universe, which in turn prepared a wide path for the emergence of evolutionary philosophy, centuries later.”

“At this point it should be evident that Heaven places no religious significance on Christmas or Easter. The selection of these days was based solely on pagan considerations; men later contrived the means by which to incorporate them into the Christian religion. It is impossible simply to ignore the holidays that have become such a staple in our own culture, yet we should not invest them with a sacredness that they do not deserve. At least we may be thankful that these days to not seek to displace or nullify any part of God’s holy law.
But now how about Sunday keeping – isn’t that a legitimate commemoration of Christ’s resurrection Ah – here is where Satan’s plot has been leading all along, Sunday observance is the fox that slipped into the chicken coop along with the pigeons. The pigeons may not be real chickens, but it’s the fox who will destroy the whole brood if he stays.”

Title: “The Scarlet Woman” amazingfacts.org/FreeStuff/OnlineLibrary/tabid/106/ctl/ViewMedia/mid/447/IID/36/LNG/en/7/The-Scarlet-Woman/SC/R/Default.aspx

And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration." Revelation 17:1-6.
It is no exaggeration to observe that our eternal salvation could well depend upon a proper identification of this corrupt church system. The Revelator declared that “all the world wondered after the beast.” Revelation 13:3

"Let us keep the points in clear, logical perspective as we look at the revealed facts. First, the woman has been shown to represent a religious system, howbeit a false one. Secondly, she is being supported by a dragon-like beast with seven heads and ten horns. Who is this beast holding up the woman Again, we cannot exhaust the evidence for lack of time, but verse 9 gives us a very strong clue. “The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.”
These words strike a very familiar chord. What city is built on seven hills The old pagan Roman Empire had its center in the city of Rome, which was sprawled across seven hills by the river Tiber. Even though this mystery beast involves much more than pagan Rome, we have sufficient evidence that Rome was definitely a part of that which gave support to the harlot church system. This leads us to the question, what church received support from the pagan Roman Empire Only one, of course, and that was the Catholic Church, whose papal head also assumed the title Pontifex Maximus, as the direct successor of the Roman caesars.
The second line of evidence which points to the papacy is found in verse 6. “And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.” History reveals only one church which waged such a frenzied warfare against faithful Christians. Over 50 million martyrs fell victim to the terrible inquisitions of the Church of Rome, according to the most conservative estimates. It was indeed a persecuting church. Multiple evidence, including admissions of the church itself, could be presented to support this particular mark of identification.
Another interesting clue is found in verse 4: “And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour.” Anyone who has visited the Vatican can confirm that these are the predominant colors which are in evidence around St. Peter’s Square. Scarlet-robed cardinals are among the most frequent visitors to the papal head of state and church.
John observes further that the woman was “decked with gold and precious stones and pearls.” What a contrast to the simplicity of the pure woman of Revelation 12 who has no artificial adornment at all - only the glory of her raiment of light. Throughout the Bible, jewelry and articles of adornment are used symbolically as indications of apostasy and unfaithfulness. (With such negative spiritual connotations, the true Christian should avoid the vanities of such fleshly display and pride.)"

“Having established that women symbolize churches in these prophetic writings, we now inquire as to the identity of these daughters. Since they are guilty of infidelity also, we must conclude that they are churches which share some of the same false doctrines which constitute spiritual fornication. In other words, they would be drinking out of the same golden cup with its unscriptural potion of pseudo-Christian teachings. Whatchurches could be represented by these daughters Since the mother has been identified as the Catholic Church, we must look for other religious bodies that came forth from the mother church of Rome and carried with them some of the same confused doctrines of that church.
None can escape the conclusion that those daughters are Protestant churches who have inherited many of the empty traditions of their Catholic forebears”.

amazingfacts.org/FreeStuff/OnlineLibrary/tabid/106/ctl/ViewMedia/mid/447/IID/8/LNG/en/7/The-Beast-The-Dragon-and-The-Woman/SC/R/Default.aspx

We have before us now a list of nine specific characteristics, which have been lifted out of the seventh chapter of Daniel in description of the little-horn power. There is only one power in all history that meets the description given here. In other words, God closes every other option, and forces us to the only possible conclusion: the Catholic Church alone fulfills all the points of identity established in Daniel 7.”

“Concerning the beast, we read further, “And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them.” Verse 7. This beast is also a persecut- ing power. In other words, the beast of Revelation 13 is the very same power as the little horn. Both are symbolic of the papacy. This is God’s graphic illustration of the papal power, as it came up to exercise arbitrary authority over the earth for 1,260 years.”

“We are now prepared to consider the climax of counterfeits as far as the beast power is concerned. We have already learned that this power was to counterfeit many of the great truths of God. It was a combination of pagan ideas with Christian doctrine which formed a conglomeration of confusion, well designated as “Babylon” in the Scripture.
A few of the counterfeits might be listed as follows: instead of the word of God, tradition; instead of the Holy Spirit, the pope; instead of baptism, sprinkling; instead of communion, transubstantiation; instead of the eternal law of God, the changed law; instead of tithe, taxes and indulgences; instead of death, purgatory; instead of the seal of God, the mark of the beast.”

“Let us see what the relation is between the seal of God and the mark of the beast.”

“The seal is the Sabbath; therefore, the Sabbath is opposed to the mark. Then what is the mark”

“The pagans had a system of religion based on sun worship. Their sacred day was the first day of the week, which they named Sun-Day in honor of the sun god. Sunday was observed by the pagans in contrast to the Sabbath observance of Christians. But in the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine, a significant thing happened. Constantine professed conversion to Christianity and opened the doors of the church to all his heathen followers.
In order to gain power, prestige, and greater numbers to the church, he accepted many of the customs of sun worship from the pagans. Many of these compromises, such as Christmas and Easter, have already been described. Another of those customs was the observance of Sunday. It appeared more convenient to let the pagans keep their own day of worship on Sunday and ask the Christians to join them in it. So Constantine actually made the first law about keeping Sunday instead of the Sabbath. Papal church councils strengthened that law until it became firmly entrenched in Christianity and the world.”

Everyone,

Please feel free to take a look at the links I’ve posted from Post # 372 to this one.

Protestant101,
Do you believe Ellen G. White is a prophet?

Do you believe she has the message for the world before the second coming of Jesus?

Do you believe her visions and teachings are from God?

Do you believe what she says in “The Great Controversy” regarding the Catholic Church, the Papacy, the beast of Revelation, the seal of God and the mark of the beast?

And I now see from your statement above about it remaining to be proven that you are wrong that you don’t understand the dialog that has been attempted. I don’t know that anyone was trying to prove you wrong. In fact, you never said anything that needed to be proven wrong…you merely pointed out where we were wrong, and then when we asked you why, you accused us of attacking you. Let the record of the threads speak for themselves.

You asked what the Catholic Church teaches about protestants. Well, I have not yet come across any teachings by the Catholic Church about protestants. It has been my observation and experience that they pretty much are not concerned about protestants one way or the other. The priest I met with, I had to call. We met, he told me that I should pray about what to do and that he would be there if I needed him. I never heard from him again for about six months, and that is when I called him again. Had I met with a SDA or other fundamentalist, my phone would have been ringing each day with follow up.

So I don’t know what the Catholic Church teaches about protestants because I have not come across that. There may be some “teaching”, but I’m not aware of it, unless it has to do with ecumenism.

All I know is what I think about protestants, and that is only because I was one and am now going to be Catholic.

It was my observation as a SDA that there was always a lot of “proving” invloved with “Bible study”…thus the phrase proof texts. I can share with you why I now believe what I believe from the Bible, from the early Church fathers and doctors, and from the deposit of faith which has built up over 2000 years. I have been convinced, I believe, and in the end I only have myself to answer for. It does not bother me that other people believe different ways, because they must answer for themselves.

What does bother me is when a major point of one church is to put down another church in their evangelism, conversion, and membership building process.

And now I have answered another one of your questions about what Catholics believe about protestants. Will you go back and answer some of mine now?

Take care and God bless you 101!

Protestant101,

It appears after looking at the site you post above, that it is an “independent ministry” site…is that correct? Or is it an official SDA site? The first site you posted, in Post # 361, was the official SDA web site…but this looks like an “independent ministry” website.

Just curious for the clarification, because I got the impression that you didn’t put much credance in the independent ministry sites as opposed to the official SDA web site.

To all,

I found the answer to one of my questions on the site Protestant101 cited above, The Remnant Church protestantfellowship.com/forum/index.php?page=83 …but shouldn’t he be answering my questions to him instead of me answering them? At least I appreciate him providing the material.

I asked Protestant101 if he believed that the Catholic Church is the beast of Revelation. Based on his authoritative web site cited above, here is his answer:

From his website cited above under the section titled: The Suffering Church

“*Finally, in 1798, 1260 years after A.D. 538, the Roman Catholic Church received a deadly blow (cf. Rev. 13:3).(9)

and here is the reference (*9) under the section titled: References

"9. This blow severely damaged the prestige of the papacy but did not end its influence. Revelation 13:3 speaks of a healing of the “deadly wound,” indicating a revival of the papal influence. In the last days it becomes the most powerful religious influence in the world."

and what is the scripture reference in the quote above referring to?

Revelation 13:1And the dragon stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. He had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on his horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. 2The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority. 3One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was astonished and followed the beast. 4Men worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like the beast? Who can make war against him?”

And how does this differ from any of the thoughts and views presented in the links that I cited on this and the previous page?

Tell your friends…these are the facts…whether they are amazing will be up to each person to decide for themselves.

God bless all!!
