Why do you suppose that Americans want to change the Church and make it more “democratic” in light of the fact that US Catholics make up maybe 5% of the world’s Catholics??? In order to be truly fair democratically speaking, Americans should only have about 5% of the total say. Any thoughts on undemocratic democracy (i.e. US Catholics wanted the Universal Church to bend to their wims)??? Thanks and God Bless.

As has been stated by several people on other threads, the Church is not a democracy. It is a monarchy, with Christ as King. The disgruntled ones will probably have to remain disgruntled.

Very true, the Church is not a democracy. My question asks why US Catholics try to push democracy in the Church when if the idea were put into effect, the US Catholics would have even less say than they already do. Either way, they lose so they try to change the Church so that they don’t have to out of Pride. And you are right, I can’t figure out why people refuse to see the Church as a consitutional monarchy how the heirarchy works. The Deposit of Faith guides the Pope in service of Christ. The Pope’s and the whole Episcopate’s job is to be Faithful to God and teach the Truth through Mercy and Justice. Thanks and God Bless.

I don’t know why. But I wish they wouldn’t and I *am *a U.S. Catholic. I think the extreme infulence of the protestant way of thinking bleeds into the Catholic faith in the U.S. and in many ways hurts the Church here. Heck, I’ve always been Catholic and protestant thinking even leaks into my faith without me knowing it. I’m sure there are many other reasons, we also don’t have the best morals over here. Many U.S. citizens like abortion, euthanasia, gay marriage…etc etc etc. So, when your morals don’t line up with the faith you like, you “vote” to change the faith.

Americans, as a whole, have a superiority complex. Our form of goverment is the best form of government; our lifestyle is the best lifestyle; our views and opinions are the most important views and opinions; our grievances are the most important grievances and should be addressed first and without regard to the concerns of others, after all, we’re Americans!

Wile I believe that this country is the greatest in the world - we lose sight that there is a world outside of our borders, and that goes for American Catholics, too.

Instead of being Catholic or learning what it means to be Catholic, the typical American Catholic seems to want to drag into the Church facets of American life. Since it is now accepted that women can be doctors, lawyers, accoutnants, politicians, etc., many think women should be priests. Since Protestants use ABC, they think Catholics should be able to use it. Since Protestant ministers have wives, Catholic priests should have them, too.

Most of the whining comes from those who would rather have a church that bends to popular opinion. There is also an intellectual laziness that is apparent in those who refuse to learn more about their faith or the Church.

Yeah, we go to see the fights hoping that a hockey game might break out.

Back on topic, I think that a large percentage of Americans (and Europeans) have so distanced themselves from Christ’s teachings and become so hard of heart that they don’t really realize what they’re trying to do. It seems to be that “me first” mentality of materialism taking over.

Large doses of humility and obedience are needed all over the world right now.

Ireland has already concluded and announced (1 day into the new Papcy, I hasten to add) that the new Pope is already out of touch with the Irish in the Ireland of today. Only through arrogant eyes this would be the case.

For those who love the Church and all it stands for we say that Ireland and most of the Irish have lost touch with the truth and are out of touch with their Church.

All a matter of perception. Insular peceptions and intellects laced with pride see the Church as having faults and being out of touch with them. Of course liberal minds can never err. Liberation assumes infallibility.

This is very sad for me to hear, Fergal. For so many centuries the Irish preserved the faith. What is going on over there?

There is a democratic church in America–it’s known as the Episcopal church. Seeing what democracy in a church brought about was one of the reasons that I began looking much harder at the Catholic Church.

Well we have new gods… Money and success. The Irish now that they have an artificial, seconf rate understanding of freedom look back with venom upon anything they think held them back this includes in a very strong way the Catholic Church.

For 800 years we were under British rule and look at how venomous our reactions to britian have been.

You know the Holy Father Pope John Paul II gave a sermon in 1979 here warning us about where Ireland would be tempted to go. He invited us to choose.

We have an we have gone the way of the world.

Keep Ireland in your prayers.

Yes the influx of EU funds has virtually transformed Dublin, I hear.

I gather that the Irish are loathe to dredge up old quarrels and this is quite sensible, I think. But to forget one’s history is not the road to travel. Benedict has written on the ‘healing of history.’ This, I think, is the road to travel.

Yes, I will keep Ireland in my prayers.

I don’t see this clamor for democracy in the church.

Could someone explain this to me?

Nice example and nicely put. 👍

The Church is America needs a stern talking to from our new Holy Father and if that doen’t work a good spankning is in order.

In Spain we aren´t better, well, we need more example, more praying, and more good pastors.

I know that it does not sound nice 🙂 but thanks God that there are so few Americans in the Catholic Church. Otherwise then we could have so great inventions as women priests, accptance of homosexuality etc.

But I believe that there are faithful catolics also there ( as I see in this forum there are ).
So let the God bless and enlight American catholics!!!
