I think our culture and other institutions have failed them and they have succumbed to the world and selfishness. They are responsible for what they do, but they are not aided by the institutions that should help them. You say these people have “no foundation or center”? What exactly happened to these people.
Culture is good in that it allows us to show our character. Without culture we cant demonstrate our character or ever hope to improve it.
Consider cuss words. There is nothing necessarily bad about the words. They generally have a specific meaning, but also have their general meaning in cussing. They are bad because society needs to have bad words. It needs to have bad words so that we can choose to use them or not. By abstaining from using them we can show character, judgment, self-control and adherence to good manners.
We need profanity to have something sacred. When nothing is profane nothing is sacred. Our society has essentially declared nothing profane. In doing so they have also said nothing is sacred.
Profanity is supreme selfishness. It is doing what we want and ignoring the standards of society and sacredness. It is better understood by the only explanation I have heard for boisterous behavior in church. That explanation is that people are happy to see each other and it is fine to express joy and happiness in church. This shows a complete lack of concern for other people. It is likely there are some people who want to be in a sacred place to pray and meditate. Being noisy ruins that opportunity. The noisy folks are concerned with their happiness and not that of those who want to enjoy silence. It would be one thing if those who want quietness were going to a party and wanting silence. But they are not. They are in a place where quietness has been expected and for a good reason.
