Leopard,I have some experience with dairy farming, and the conditions shown and described do not exist on any dairy farm I have ever seen. This does not give me confidence that the producers of this video have not likewise selectively chosen the most sensational atypical video that they could find in regards to other farming and food processing methods.
I watched it too.
I agree with you, my experiences with dairy farming/cattle raising, and livestock slaughter don’t totally square with this video. It seems to me that that footage was taken “undercover”, and which could explain some of the graininess. . . but some of the techniques in the video – from the voice over, to the editing, etc – seems a bit dramatic.
So, I agree with you, it seems a questionable piece. For instance, I can’t quite understand the narrator’s insistence that these animals are slaughtered without any anesthesia. I’ve never seen anesthesia administered to any animals before slaughter, in any farming operation – small scale or industrial. If we (or our forefathers) raised a cow or a couple of chickens on our land would we (or they) have administered anesthesia? Perhaps I am mistaken, though.
That said, there is no reason not to (and good reason to) strive to take care of, raise, and slaughter our animals in the most humane way feasible. I think many would agree that some of our modern techniques need further scrutiny, and a possible reform. We want to avoid being Luddites of course, but there does seem to be a danger that “industrialization” can devolve into “dehumanization”. But that seems to be the danger in all areas. Original sin, you know!
