Hi!

Welcome to the forum.

I’m watching Toradora again. Is one of the shows in that genre that has high quality and low fanservice content.

I saw only the first episode of Non Non Biyori. When I wanted to continue it, I was reading about Hotaru having a crush on Komari, so I didn’t watched it, is that true? that happens in the series?

God bless you!

🙂
Non non biyori was an amazing show, and I think it did a great job of showing the difference of how children used to live (and live now in the country) before the beginning of the internet and TV etc. The show was a 10/10 in my book. Hotaru has a “crush” on Komari, but as you probably know Japan’s culture is a bit different from what westerner’s are used to; and the “young girl who admires older girl” trope is seen in a lot of anime. If you are worried that they end up romantically involved nad kissing or something like that, that’s not going to happen. In Japan, it is not unusual for a girl to highly admire an older girlfriend and look up to them, and the show exploits this trope with humor (for example Hotaru likes to sew dolls, and sews a bunch of dolls of Komari because she thinks she looks cute, due to her size). Nothing in the show hinted to me that Hotaru liked Komari sexually or romantically, but instead admired her. Don’t worry too much about it.

There’s actually quite a bit of slice of life that have this trope, in one of them Azumanga Daioh, one of the characters is actually romantically attracted to another girl, although that’s in the background and not the focus of the show. Still doesn’t make it a bad show, I thought that one was good too.

God bless you as well.

Thanks.

I see. So isn’t romantic attraction? good.

I know about that trope, although in various shows (specially newer ones) is played more to the romantic side, and that is a problem.

Regarding Azumanga Daioh, I know about that character, and I didn’t continued the series after reading about it. I think that is problematic, since they are presenting such attraction in a positive or neutral manner.

God bless you!

My roommate and I gave up watching Naruto. It was just too damn long. If I may ask who is that in your signature banner? Shime Ryoumo or Rikka Takanashi?
Not as long as One Piece at least. 😛 As to your second question, it’s neither. It’s Agito Wanijima from Air Gear. 😉

All these years I thought that banner featured a female character…

Well, misheru almost got the series genre right, both the first character mentioned and the one in the banner are from shows with fanservice and nudity, from what I’ve read about these series.

Chuunibyou is a fanservice-centered show
Umm no, it’s a romantic comedy with nothing of the sort. Ikki tousen is quite lascivious though.

Also Lost Wanderer; Hentai Ouji was hilarious. It was one of the recent shows I’ve liked; the story was cute and had a good message, and Tsukiko was adorable. a little too over the top with the dumb fanservice though but overall it was a good watch.

Have you watched any of the KyoAni shows like K-On or tamako market?

Not Rikka from Chuunibyou, I was speaking of the other character and series.

I didn’t continued Tamako Market, because things like a crush of Midori towards Tamako (both girls, for the ones that don’t know about the series), according to what I’ve read on the wiki of the series.

Agito takes after his mother, that’s for sure. 😉

For personal reasons, I have really ceased to care. I might as well call stories like that my picture of heaven. Gangs, girls, and just coming home happy (and not dead). No more of that nag in your head telling you about the disapproval of God/society/everyone who isn’t you. Call me selfish, degenerate, and delusional but really, I’m done with that. Keep sticking to what you think is right but you’re going to be preaching to a wall when talking to me about it. Just saying. :coffeeread:

Yeah, it was funny. Tsukiko’s stoic look is just adorable even though there was a little too much drama at some points.

As for KyoAni stuff, Imma just say K-On!! is that big, stuffed bunny I hug when I’m secretly alone and would like to nurse what little is left of warm, fuzzy humanity in my heart. 😊

Regarding the character, yes, maybe is because of said resemblance.

About the second paragraph. When I mention that, is because lots of people are reading this too, so, warnings about the questionable contents of productions mentioned here are needed, if applicable.

God bless you!

Hehe 😛

^^ I’m the same. Cute anime girls are my anti-drug 😛

I have not really finished K-On, slowly but surely reading the manga but I mostly like to collect images of the K-On girls (particularly Ritsu lol)

Anything you’re watching currently?

I watched the second episode of Non Non Biyori. I gues this one is what made the people from the wiki of the series write that Hotaru has a crush on Komari.

Certainly, it looks suspicious, I mean, in some scenes where Hotaru is with Komari they even change the backgrounds and replace them with hearts (or add hearts to scenes without the background changed), in a manner reminiscent of shojo manga.

And I found this, from episode 8:

s1.postimg.org/dzl2viv6n/non0804_zps68cf5ad0.png

Besides that, it had some funny scenes, like Komari not recognizing Hotaru and thinking she was an unknown lady asking for directions.

God bless you!

I guess it’ll just have to be according to your tastes then. 😑

As I said, Japanese culture is an influence in this in the sense that someone in Japan wouldn’t consider a heart background to signify a romantic relationship; they can signify anything from the character being happy to trying to be cute. I think you’re reading too much into it. Even if there were some sort of non-humorous (since the “crush” is tongue-in-cheek parody of admiration) romantic relationship between the two, its a shame that we can’t enjoy a good show with a good message because of it. Just as there are homosexual individuals in the real world they will be found in storytelling. Watching a television show with 2 homo characters (not implying that’s the case in Non Non Biyori) isn’t going to make you get up and sodomize anyone. That just my two cents. 🤷

In almost any anime you watch, particularly comedy, you will see references and jokes being made pertaining to sexuality because the culture there hasn’t demonized sex as they have here in the states, even within Christians and Catholics.

If you are interested ina good slice of life story that has absolutely not reference to sexuality I recommend reading Yotsuba!, a cute story about a little girl and her adventures playing with her neighbors etc. Like a Japanese Calvin and Hobbes.

Maybe, good point. But how is going to be received by other viewers? I mean, people affected or influenced by these things (fans of that stuff, etc. I guess you are aware of the terrible state of fandoms in general).

And in what context that picture I linked appears? that explanation applies there too?

Enjoying something that presents sinful relationships in a neutral or positive manner…

I’m not surprised, but still, why I have to point why such things are wrong?

A “good” message is ruined if they include something like that. Why I have found myself in this same thread, again, and again pointing why these productions are questionable. The same topic has appeared in this thread in more than 3 ocassions. I think that should be more obvious…

They could have some didactical purpose in storytelling, but is important to not portray these behaviors in a positive manner.

Personally, these things don’t affect me, but I think, should I watch something glorifying that sin?

I’m not from your country. Also, I have years watching anime and reading manga, I’m aware of these things, and beacuse I know about that, it doesn’t mean I’m not going to criticize them. Also, there is certain difference when unnatural relationships appear in the picture.

I say we agree to disagree; since we obviously have different views. 🙂

If I thought it was simply a matter of opinion or views I wouldn’t be so invested on it. Maybe if it was mainly about taste and aesthetics, but still that would be different.

Something that I have thought about is the (sad) current state of various artistic, cultural, and entertainment related environments and productions.

Besides prayer, I think that as Catholics, we could do something about that.

I haven’t watched the show in question, and I’m not talking about it here, but…

They (the Japanese) haven’t ‘Demonized’ sex as in the USA? How about more like they have rather normalized disordered desires? As we have already done so here. No, it’s not sex that’s been demonized, and it’s reeeallly interesting you should use that term.

Is the glorification of mortally sinful behavior really so insidious that people can no longer tell the difference? Even on a ‘Catholic’ forum?

Since I guess the time has passed for me to be able to edit my post…this addition.

I’m not pointing fingers at anyone. Just pondering aloud.

Again, I haven’t seen the shows in question. For all I know, they could be fairly innocent and I might then think they were cute, and the slight cultural differences could mean nothing more than comedy.

But important points have been raised.

And actually, I stand corrected. The West HAS indeed ‘demonized’ sex.

They have demonized it by glorifying fornication and abnormality, and by failing to stand up for the proper role of sex in a civilized society.

If you believe otherwise, I urge you to think about this. WHY portray homosexual relationships? For what purpose? WHY glorify fornication in its various guises?

‘Butbutbut…we have to be TOLERANT, don’t we?’

Tolerant of what?

The very concept of marriage and the family has been all but destroyed by the same forces of ‘tolerance.’

Our world has fallen so far down the pit that if you were born before a certain era, you literally do not realize this. We may have gone so far that we cannot be pulled back into sanity.

And these issues are all interrelated. Sodomy, sin, and murder. They’re all best friends, and they all have a single aim whether the average consumer realizes it or not.

I assure you that before the horrific decision of Roe v. Wade, the slaughter of the unborn was not portrayed as a ‘right.’

What one generation tolerates, the next glorifies.

I guess, I don’t worry about how others are going to take or view an anime. In the west reviewers or critics often put meaning in the shows here that I would have never seen on my own. Heck there were people her claiming that Frozen was promoting homosexuality, (you can look it up). And all you have to do is search for the Harry Potter threads on this forum to see that people are calling that sinful because it “promotes witchcraft.”

I don’t get involved in fandoms or fanfic. I only look up wikis on anime if I need help figuring out what is going on or keeping up with characters, or recently with Attack on Titan just to see who else dies, because I just couldn’t take it anymore. (BTW I finished the first season and still don’t see what the appeal is, that story is bloodier than a George R.R. Martin novel).

I can see pointing our particularly questionable parts of a show or using disclaimers, when discussing or recommending (or not) shows.

But I don’t normally even look up anime before deciding to watch it. I will watch the first 2 episodes to determine it if is worth my time.

Recently I watched Bladedance of Elementalers, but the fanservice was horrendous. And when discussing that anime, that would of course be mentioned and warned against to anyone interested in watching.

You seem more disturbed by the unnatural homosexual relationships than the fan service in general. But to me, the fanservice shows an unnatural view of women (in fact the way rape is often threatened or suggested towards female characters bears this out). That is not to say we shouldn’t be concerned about promoting sinful behavior, but most of what I have seen in this regard is really innocent compared to the objectification of women in the a lot of otherwise seemingly benign anime.

I thought there would be more discussion of anime in general rather than how media affects sin in here… In summary I believe that as adults and Catholics we can have the intelligence, willpower and faith to discern what we watch and enjoy a good show without sodomizing each other; in teh same way we can play a shooting game without shooting up a school.

For now I’ll go check out other parts of the forum; if anyone wants to talk anime just make a post.

Thank you!!

THANK YOU!!!

Imma kiss your feet! Mwahmwahmwah! Thank you!

Finally, somebody who shares the same view on Attack on Titan. I could never grasp the popularity of this series. Just a couple days ago I had this animated discussion with a friend who’s completely, head-over-heels fanboying over it. I mean, I normally go by the maxim of never even engaging in anime argument because everyone’s entitled to their tastes (more on that later). Alas, he just had to be one of those people who chose to diss Sword Art Online. For a long time, I’ve been keeping my mouth shut on Facebook on how I just can’t dig Attack on Titan. But when you just openly create a status on just how much you’ve grown to particularly hate an anime that I enjoy, I’m taking off my gloves and flipping the table.

Attack on Titan disgusts me. I mean, I’m all for GoT-style gore. However, there’s only so much blood and organs you can send flying around before I need something to counterbalance it. Failure means I am growing to like your work less.

But worst still are character deaths. That’s like the rotten corpse that tops off the steaming pile of refuse of which the anime just impressed upon me. My tolerance for killing off characters is low enough as it is without an author being so openly blatant about it and plays cards like character development, realism, and style as an excuse.

Then again, it’s not really an excuse to fans who like that sort of thing. That’s really both the issue at hand and partly the reason why arguments like this take place at all!

Why can’t people just realize that this is ultimately a matter of preference, of taste. Yes, you can cite your morals, personal experience, religion, or whatever. That doesn’t change the fact that it’s really all you. I don’t see why some people prefer to rail and declare everything else garbage because, as much I think AoT is garbage, it’s really a matter of taste!

This is the biggest problem I have with people styling themselves as critics. Funnier still is that my reasoning is best expressed by a western animated film, Ratatouille:
In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. - Anton Ego
I too previously thrived on negative criticism, even (if not especially) towards myself. My life, much less my views on anime, never felt emptier than the hedonistic hooligans that are often scorned on these forums.

Setting that aside, I remember watching this morning the latest episode of SAO II. I could see plenty of the scenes utterly dismissed by rancid critics. (“Ugh, empathy.” “Man this is stupid.” “What is this sentimental tripe!?”) The fact that I could still recall my shadow as a nasty criticizer only made me realize how truly horrifying the mindset was.

True I’ve been quite critical myself of a lot things. But you know, it’s a whole lot different from when you do it for the raw sake of upholding some elusive ‘standard’ (be it moral or otherwise). You forget a lot of things that define your humanity. And in this case, you forget that the sole reason for watching all this is to simply enjoy it.

I see my friends who claim to have a lot of discerning tastes. One moment, they’re raving about something as the best thing since sliced bread but then a few months later, it’s worse than Justin Bieber. This kind of petty, hipster-ish inconsistency just really puts me off. Critics are just full of it really. (Ironically, I’m designated as the hipster of the group!)

Why can’t people just say, “I like it cuz I like this sort of stuff.”? 🤷
