lol, my sisters leave indentations in their mattresses though they are lighter than me. I think it has to do with sleeping in the same place, same position all night, every night. 😃

Well we got a tempurpedic and we love it. Both of us sleep so much better than we used to. My hubby used to toss and turn all night keeping me up and now he lays still. Also it has helped me with back pain. They are worth saving up the money for.

Anyone have a waterbed?
Are those even made any more? I remember when they first came out, how expensive and weird they were, and they always, and I do mean ALWAYS sprang leaks…You couldn’t have them in apartments and insurance companies wouldn’t cover any damage if they did burst. But I have thought about it because I could turn down the heater and have a really COLD bed…

Anyone have a waterbed?
My in-laws do, and have been water bed afficionados since the 70s.

Their current model has two bladders that can be individually adjusted for firmness. There are springs or something similar in each bladder for additional support. It also doesn’t need to be heated, like water beds of yore. It also takes regular sheets. They adore it.

It’s weird how I know so much about someone else’s bed, eh? šŸ˜› I was actually over at their house last night for dinner and we got to talking about it.

They do make them. There is a store near me that sells them. My BIL has one and loves, loves, loves it. He is in his 40s and has had one since he was in his teens. My son wants one. I have been thinking about one for a while for my sore back.

My wife & I bought a new mattress about two years ago from one of those places that builds their own mattresses onsite. Box spring with pillow top on both sides. It may have just been the salesman talking, but he recommended that you never buy a ā€œnon-flippableā€ mattress. His reasoning was that it’s a marketing scheme to save the mattress companies money. He said they’re not made any better than the flippable ones; they just lack the extra pillow top/padding on the other side. They spend less on materials and charge more for the gimmick.

As far as the memory foam mattresses go, I have a friend who bought one 6-7 years ago. After 2-3 years, his big, comfy $1200 block of foam was a smaller, dense, brick of hard, yellow plastic that was crumbling at the edges. The place we got our mattress even offered memory foam mattresses, but the salesman warned us not to get one. It could be the newer ones are better, but I’ll stick with traditional mattresses, or upgrade to a sleep number bed once this one gives out.

We tried a memory foam mattress, and they do trap a lot of heat. It was great support for my pregnant belly, though. I didn’t have to use an extra pillow under my belly to sleep. BUT, it’s easy to get ā€œlocked inā€ to a certain position while you are sleeping. Both DH and I found that sometimes we’d wake up in the middle of the night with a terrible pain in a shoulder or hip, because we’d sunken into the mattress in a weird position and not been able to roll out of it in our sleep.

We’ve got a traditional mattress/box spring that we are happy with right now. It’s nothing fancy–whatever they were selling at Costco when we were looking for a new bed.

My parents got a pillow top and loved it. The only drawback was that it was so big that they had to buy special sheets to fit over it. My inlaws tried the sleep number bed, but they said that it was hard to snuggle or do anything of that nature in it because of the shelf down the middle. This was about 5 years ago, so they might have improved the design of the sleep number beds since then.

We bought a new mattress/box spring set a few years ago. Got a pillowtop that is pillowtop on both sides, so it can be flipped. Best sleep I’ve had! Our salesman was similar to what another poster on here said - really downplayed the idea of getting a non-flippable mattress, said it won’t last as long. We, wanting to be thorough, left there, went to one other place, and after about 3 minutes in the store, went right back to where we started. LOL

We are pretty good about not only flipping, but rotating the mattress regularly. Helps to avoid having the indentations from where we both sleep.

OP, judging from your user name, I don’t think I’m going out on a limb to think you have kids, right 😃

Do any of the children climb in bed and sleep with you ever? If so, I’d recommend as large a mattress as you can afford. When DH and i were getting married we got the advice to buy a king size bed and get other furniture as we could afford it. Dh’s brother, with bags under his eyes said ā€œSome kid, at some point will sleep with you. Better make sure you have enough roomā€.

So, so glad we followed that advice. When there has been a nightmare or fever that pops up in the middle of the night, them cuddle up and not feel like we’re falling out of bed.

Papa-in-law took a disability retirement because of his back, and he won’t sleep on anything but a water bed. They were traveling right before Christmas, and he came home in pretty bad pain after a week on traditional mattresses. 🤷

Thanks everyone! šŸ™‚ Reading all your comments is very helpful. It’s interesting to see the wide range of people’s opinions on this subject. I’d love to comment on many of the individual posts, but right now I want to pick your brains about your experiences.

We’ve narrowed it down to either a traditional two sided mattress with pillow top OR a sleep number/air mattress. Thoughts?

I like especially like to read what these beds are like after a few years. We want to make sure our comfortable new mattress will stay comfortable.

We got a baffled waterbed in the late 70’s and loved it. After many years use we then got a sleep number bed and hated it. Now I am back with the waterbed and will never have anything else. It uses regular sheets and sits inside the bed frame of a 4 poster bed. I highly recommend. My husband had a bad back and found that the water bed worked best for him.

Baffled water bed - that’s what they’re called. I couldn’t for the life of me remember what my in-laws had called theirs. Thank you! :tiphat:

We got our pillow top (both sides) in December of '08 (maybe '09 - not sure, now that I think about it - but it’s been a few years). It is still wonderful. We can start to tell if we’ve gone too long without flipping and/or turning it. Once we do, it’s like a new mattress all over.

Doesn’t the side on the bottom get flattened?

🤷
