And upon this rock I will build my CHURCH.

CHURCH is organized religion.

It’s a simple case that he has blindly accepted society’s prejudice against religion and is trying to reconcile it with his Christian faith by going the “spiritual but not religious” route.

He doesn’t seem to realize that his philosophy is not backed up by centuries of Christian thought, right down to the apostles, nor Scripture itself.

This guy makes me embarrassed to be a Protestant. I know it was just hyperbole and all, and I’m sure he meant well, but still. What exactly does he mean by “religion”? I can sort of understand contrasting “Jesus” to religion, but contrasting “Christianity” to religion is totally bizarre. It was as if he had said “I hate praying, but I love talking to God”.
 
The statement is false from the beginning.
You learn Jesus Christ through a Religion.
And what Jesus?
It depends on the glasses you put or the teacher who taught you.
Remember that all these religions admire Jesus for different reasons: Catholics, Protestants (and different denominations see Him in a different way), Hindhus, Muslims and even animists.
So, “what Jesus” does that person love?
 
I think the claim “hate religion, love Jesus” is simply ludicrous, not to mention ignorant. Look up the definition of religion in any dictionary or on Google, and one will find Christianity fits the given definitions rather well, if not perfectly.

I’m glad the poet was able to turn his life around. However, he did so within the context of a religion, whether he wants to admit it or not. How it’s even possible to know about Jesus or the Bible outside the context of a religion is beyond me. 🤷

It doesn’t help when he makes a video spouting anti-Catholic/anti-Church cliches, though. It makes no sense why Christianity should be contrasted against a religion. 🤷 That’s why I’m finishing up my own rebuttal to his claims.
 
It is a largely held belief that is gaining currency today. The cliche that we don’t need a church or dogma to be able to be Christians. Though I believe this is how heresies start; without confines self sufficient beliefs go off on tangents, with a magisterium we our kept within the body. :signofcross:
