From what I have personally witnessed, I think that more Catholic Churches would be wise to have more educational opportunities for their adults–not just RCIA if they want them to stay away from other Churches.
I couldn’t agree with you more.

Unfortunately, there are many poorly catechized Catholics out there who are easily swayed.

I also think that it is incumbent upon the Catholic Parishioner to either suggest to their pastor for programs like this in their parish or to actively seek out Catholic Bible studies and prayer groups.

Again, for the third time, there is no Mass to attend at 6pm on a Sunday here, none at all, the doors are closed, everybody has gone home, done notta, do I have to write this on your hand so you can remember it???
prodigalson12,
I have a relative that lives in Vancouver, WA the same as you. They often attend Mass in Portland, OR which is about 10 miles away. Check out masstimes.org
St. Mary Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Portland lists nightly Mass times at 5:30 P.M.
Prodigal, I don’t quite understand your reasoning for not attending Mass. What do you mean about a 6:00 p.m. Mass not being available?🤷

Are you a teenager? You are very flippant about going to Hell and no MATURE Catholic would ever feel that way. And, since when is going to Mass not relevant.

You say you don’t want to get into a debate about Catholic/Protestant issues but wasn’t that really the purpose of this thread?🤷

Or was it that you are boasting, for whatever reason, about going to so many Protestant services?

Your words make it seem you are almost jumping with glee about attending all these services. And that is what is bewildering to those of us who are practicing Catholics.

I believe you are a teenager so I won’t respond to further posting because you are not serious, just having fun.:sad_yes:👋

:amen:
mullenpm,
I have to almost totally agree with you. I think that there are some deeper seeded issues at play by reading prodigalson12’s postings in other threads.

Peace, Graubo

hi - some responses may sound harsh but i thing the last post is a valid point. a Catholic who has the energy like yourself can start or join a prayer group, sunday catechism to school children, visiting detention centers, the sick or homebound, etc. all of which offer a great fellowship. Catholics have many ways to enrich his relationship with the Lord, the most effective for me is spending time during adoration and the Holy Eucharist. i hope you have this in the Church in your area.
God bless.
Another suggestion is that the US Conference of Catholioc Bishops and some Lutheran groups encourage joint Bible study, lead by clergy who in an atmosphere of Christian love and charity bring people together to celebrate commonalities and differences.

Prodigalson, I know I said I would no longer post on your thread but here I am. I was curious as to the game you are playing so I read your other postings.

I accused you of being a teenager; I read you are in your 20’s but that is your chronological age - your behaviour bespeaks teenager.

I believe the most outrageous post you made (I forget which thread it was on - you begin new threads when the postings in the current one don’t go your way) was wherein you bragged about “tricking” your protestant friends into saying the Rosary. You didn’t say the Rosary prayers - you mocked the Blessed Mother by making up a silly game for each bead.

Young man, you did not trick anyone into saying the Rosary but I would imagine you wounded deeply the Heart of our Blessed Lord by mocking the Rosary of His Blessed Mother. :tsktsk:

Another remark you made is **“for some odd reason, being the only catholic there, I was the one expected to take the lead in the discussion, of which I did.” **

You not only are creating scandal to our Catholic faith you are insulting the intelligence of your protestant friends. Do you really, in your heart, believe that they expected you to lead them in their Bible discussion. You are not qualified to speak for the Catholic Church - it appears that you do not know the basic responsibility of a Catholic.😦

YOU MUST ATTEND MASS EACH AND EVERY SUNDAY. Failing to do this puts your soul in a state of grave sin. I certainly hope that on the rare occasions you attend Mass you do not receive at Holy Communion unless and until you have gone to Confession.

Now, I am finished with you. I do understand why you church hop though, I am sure you are not welcomed back a second time at any of the churches you hop to.

👋

Do some reading of the word some time, they have a little commandment you need some major brushing up upon, it’s called the 9th. What you just stated is a fabrication and out right slam against my character.

You are boarding blasphemy at this point,. I won’t even give that statement the dignity of a response, ;tsktsk indeed.
Another remark you made is **“for some odd reason, being the only catholic there, I was the one expected to take the lead in the discussion, of which I did.” **
They wanted me to take the lead because of my faith and the fact we Catholics have much to share, I was not trying to lead, but man, the empty space, someone had to speak up, so I did, which kept it rolling along.

You are the very reason Catholics are being misrepresented, you don’t seem to be qualified to speak for the Christians in general, let alone Catholics, you are severely lacking the core, basic, fundamental beliefs Christians Catholic or Protestants alike are supposed to support.
YOU MUST ATTEND MASS EACH AND EVERY SUNDAY. Failing to do this puts your soul in a state of grave sin. I certainly hope that on the rare occasions you attend Mass you do not receive at Holy Communion unless and until you have gone to Confession.

Really, confession, you mean we have to confess? (sarcasm). You don’t go to hell for skipping a Sunday, this is absolutely not what it’s about at all. You are giving the Catholic faith a really bad image, this is the very type of self condemning thinking that we must never adhere to, it’s self destructive and sends an extremely negative and false message as to what the church is about and what is taught within it.
Now, I am finished with you.
somehow I doubt this will be the case.
I do understand why you church hop though,
That’s ok, God does, that is all that matters.
I am sure you are not welcomed back a second time at any of the churches you hop to.
I’m welcomed back to all of them.

Grave sin indeed!!!

IMO, these “recovering Catholics” are like teenagers who are unhappy with themselves. They’re too immature to accept the responsibility for their personal faults, and they’re too immature to accept that they do, and will always, have faults, so they blame their parents and family. In the case of a “recovering Catholic”, she blames the Church.
Sure there will be some people recovery from their religion of origin or other religious involvement who do this. But there are also those who take too much responsibility and blame themselves excessively for either not being able to live up to what their religion demands or believe what they have to believe to stay “in good standing”.

kalt:
If you can blame the Church for all that is wrong with you, you don’t have to take responsibility.
And if you take all the responsibility then others do not have to take responsibility. Responsibility is usually mixed.

You can run to strangers who will gladly accept your excuses and your version of what your family (church) is, so long as it makes them heroic and superior. They become your savior and are happy to believe any horrible thing you say about your former family (Church), because it validates their self-worth.
And for every one who does this will be another who keeps it all to themselves and tries to work it out for themselves.

Sooner or later, many of these people come home.
And while some do not, some will be able to separate the wheat from the chaff and value the good of their home/religious home while avoiding what is not healthy for them.

I like to church hop, with this current one, I became quite disturbed, for the pastor was referencing one of their members as a “recovering Catholic”, he mentioned this twice and proceeded to stand in the back of the church so people could watch the video being shown to them. I abruptly left, crucifix and bible in hand, and mentioned to him that I’m a visiting Catholic and didn’t appreciate the comments he made.

He followed me out of the church and apologized, I was so upset, I was shaking, and of course, I accepted his apology, after we chatted a little bit, I calmed down and hung out for the rest of the service.

The lesson learned here, there is “nothing” to recover from, from the Catholic church. The misconception many protestants, and even too many Catholics get into, is thinking that in order to be Catholic, you must maintain a sense of self loathing and guilt, this absolutely is not supposed to be the case at all, in fact, just the opposite if you are getting the messages being taught to you correctly. The reality of it all, that person was recovering from their misconception, not the true church and what it stands for.
At least the pastor apologized to you (admitted that he was wrong) and you accepted his apology (which was Good). There should be no further problem I think.

Do some reading of the word some time, they have a little commandment you need some major brushing up upon, it’s called the 9th. What you just stated is a fabrication and out right slam against my character.
It is you who needs to brush up on his knowledge of the Commandments.
The Commandment against bearing false witness is the 8th - not the 9th - unless you’re a Protestant, that is.

Really, confession, you mean we have to confess? (sarcasm).* You don’t go to hell for skipping a Sunday, this is absolutely not what it’s about at all.* You are giving the Catholic faith a really bad image, this is the very type of self condemning thinking that we must never adhere to, it’s self destructive and sends an extremely negative and false message as to what the church is about and what is taught within it.
**Wanna bet? This is precisely what the Church teaches. **
To willfully miss mass is grave matter and constitutes a mortal sin - which DOES cause separation from God and eternal punishment.
Don’t speak for the Church unless you know what you’re talkling about - which you obviously don’t.

That’s ok, God does, that is all that matters.
God IS what matters and to reject the teachings of HIS Church is to reject HIM.
I’m welcomed back to all of them.
Grave sin indeed!!!
Yes - GRAVE SIN.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states:

2181 "The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. [Cf. CIC, can. 1245] Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin."

Brush up on your faith and speak not of what you know not of.

According to your own points here elvis, this means if you are working, or sleep schedule dictates having to miss a mass, then you are in error, for that is not an excuse according to your view. According to your own point, missing a single mass between it, Good Friday for example, you are in error. According to your point, we might as well just live in the church worshiping day and night neglecting our own lives, or own families, our own work, just to be perfectly in line with it all, because we dare not miss one out of ignorance.

If I were to use your logic, almost all Catholics are in mortal sin all of the time, they all are separated by God and all are condemned to hell for eternity. You too are as well, for you see your neighbor stumble each time you go to mass and if they are not there, you do nothing to help correct that. I will be trying to get my local parish to get it’s doors open during times for those of us with ruthless scheduling, until then, I’m going to be missing the “obligatory” mass from time to time, it’s just a given.

Along the false witness, regardless of the number one picks, the message is clear, I have no desire to get into semantics, if you want to wiki it up: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Commandments it’s the message that should be known, not the number of it’s order that matters. And you yourself should brush up on this one, you just did it to me stating that I rejected his church, of which I have not.

Anyway, not here to debate this issue, it is yet again so off topic, and yet again so counterproductive. The message intended is about how we should focus along unity, not tearing each other, and each church down, and let these other topics go into their own “seperate” threads all together. With the advent and evolution of the new mass, things have changed within the Catholic church, it has become more inviting to newcomers because of ceremonial changes, the message being taught is still clear, yet things in certain areas have relaxed. I suspect this movement is to draw in more members, or bring back Catholics that chose to frequent other churches, I don’t know, at least it’s showing a progressive movement which is keeping in line with the times, how often has it done so in the past? Right now it’s in the stage of growing pains, it’s also facing opposition in the face of modern man who has rejected it, I certainly have a great appreciation for tradition, and part of me still struggles with how it has changed over the years, yet I still keep my roots embedded within fertile ground, I refuse to let the vine whither into fruitless endeavors, and this is reflecting within the unquenchable thirst I have for the Lord.

What???🤷
You’re poor sentence structure makeas it difficult to follow your points.
I think what you were trying to say is that I am in error according to my view(?).**

I laid out the Church’s stance according to the Catechism - not my opinion.
I am also guessing that you are a fan of ecumenism. Unfortunately, your view on ecumenism comes at the expense of the Catholic faith which you have chosen to water down - and in some instances, reject. You reject the Church’s teaching on our Sunday obligation. You also reject the Church’s teachings on frequenting Protestant churches for personal spiritual fulfillment. The Church teaches that the fullness of the Gospel is found only in the Catholic Church and there is no need to seek spiritual fulfillment elsewhere.

Nobody is bearing false witness here, just going by your fruits.

Prodigal,

Good Friday is not a Holy Day of Obligation. In the USA there are 6 Holy Days of Obligation. That is in addition to all Sundays thoughout the year.

They are:

January 1: Mary, Mother of God
May 21: Ascension of Our Lord
August 15: Feast of the Assumption of Mary
November 1: All Saints Day
December 8: Immaculate Conception of Mary
December 25: Christmas, also referred to as The Nativity of Our Lord

For the record Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation either.

I would encourage you to learn more about your Faith. Spend more time with Jesus in the Eucharist. Look at what sorts of activities other Catholic parishes in your area have to offer. We do have Bible studies in the Catholic Church as well as get togethers. Another thing if you want to attend Mass more than once a week I have no doubt that there is a parish in your area that has Mass daily. Many of them do.

In regard to the Sunday obligation. Children as young as 7/8 years old learn that attending Mass on Sunday is an obligation and that it is a mortal sin to miss for no reason. You are required to do your best to attend Mass either on Saturday evening or on Sunday. Exceptions are made for illness and bad weather as well as schedule conflicts. However, considering the number of parishes in the USA with a variety of scheduling times I would think missing do to schedule conflict would be uncommon.

As far as Wikipedia goes, it’s not a reliable source. Way to easy to change the information on there. There are other sources that are more reliable. For Catholics and others interested in Catholicism the Catechism is one such source.

Understanding is the antidote for hatred, and understanding will never come if we all stay in our little corners and hide behind our own doctrines. Kudo’s prodigalson.
