This reminds me of watching films with my husband. He is one of those very practically minded people and when watching a film; such as Die Hard, he often says, ‘that gun only holds X number of bullets and he’s fired about 100.’ Or, ‘why is he doing that, it would be much better if he did this.’ I have to remind him, 'it’s not real it’s a film, the gun isn’t real, the people in it aren’t really getting killed and see that couple who have fallen madly in love - they are acting.
I may be veering off topic here, but it actually really irritates me when people say this. Expecting a fictional gun to work like a real gun unless it’s a plot point that the gun was magic or something
isn’t the same thing as not knowing the difference between a movie and real life.
ahem But anyway, back to the whoppers.
- All Catholics are going to hell because the Church moved the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday
I had someone tell me that the Catholic Church moved the Sabbath to Sunday just to demonstrate the power and authority of the Church. My
guess would be this person just misunderstood an explanation of why we worship/rest on Sunday, which I imagine would have mentioned something about Jesus having given His church the authority to make such a change.
This same person told me that the Church was basically the Roman Empire continuing in modern times, though. (In which case we’ve lost an awful lot of land… Does that still count as an empire?)
9.The title of the pope of Rome is “Vicarius Filii Dei” which when converted to Roman numerals is 666, therefore making the Pope the Antichrist
I seem to remember this one from the book
Pope Fiction. As I understand it, not only is there no
actual papal title that you can do this with, but you
can do it with the name of the person who started the myth!
Regarding the whole “whore of babylon” thing, one that bugs me is the one about the whore being a city that sits on seven hills. Rome sits on seven hills! So the
Roman Catholoc Church must be the whore!
Never mind that
Rome isn’t the same as “The Vatican” (which as you know is synonymous with the Catholic Church

), and while Rome apparently has seven famous hills, the one Vatican City sits on
isn’t one of them.
