I am often told I think I can earn heaven. I understand where that misunderstanding comes from, but when I try to explain where the person went wrong they refuse to believe differently.
Then again, a lot of people on here seem to KNOW who will or will not go to Heaven. My understanding was always that nobody knows. For example in one thread I read if a teenage boy masturbates he will go to hell UNLESS he goes to confession. That is already assuming to have the KNOWLEDGE he will go to hell if he doesn’t confess or go to Heaven if he confesses. In both cases it is an ASSUMPTION.

Well, we know some people will go to heaven—saints, that is. But only God knows what’s in our hearts and he’s the last say when it comes to who is going to hell.
Yeah, I get, ‘you think God’s a wafer.’ 😃

Don’t you just love people who are able to tell you what you think?
Oh yes, it’s positively wonderful. Especially when they have a whole line of misconceptions to back up that one. 😛

“No, it’s the Real Presence in the Eucharist.”

“Well it doesn’t matter because Catholics are going to hell anyway!”

Like, when you try to explain Catholics don’t worship Mary or the Eucharist? 😃
To be honest, it took me a bit to get the whole “Praying to is not same as worshiping”

I was uncomfortable with the whole Mary thing at first. Now though?

Hail Mary,
Full of grace,
The Lord is with thee;
Blessed art thou among women,
And blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary,
Mother of God
Pray for us sinners
Now, and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

Mother Mary helps me every day!

God Bless ya!

I guess I really wanted to go to hell, that’s why I became a Catholic. :banghead::extrahappy:

Oh, really? Are you sure? I always hear it referred to as “for sure.”
You have to take my answer with a grain of salt:). The reason I wrote “believe” is because religion is based on faith and not facts.😉

That is not true. That position is known as fideism and it has been condemned by the Church.

Yes, I believe John Paul II wrote about the danger of fideism because it supposes that faith is superior rather than equal to reason, or something along that line.

Hm, I never heard of Fideism. Anyway, I mentioned that my answer was to be taken with a grain of salt. I am just a bit irritated because I often read that people say if this person doesn’t confess or If he does this or that, he will go to Hell and I always assumed only God knows this and we’re not to judge. That’s why I prefer to say I ‘believe’ this and that rather than I know but I’m splitting hairs here and didn’t intend to. Sorry:o

D’oh! Of course! I hadn’t thought of that. Popes but not of the Catholic Church itself. Man. I wish you were there when she told me that. Haha. I might have been able to explain better…

Thanks. 🙂
It sounds as if you are under the impression that today there is only one catholic church in the world. There are many churches that call themselves catholic but are not of the Roman communion. The word “catholic” means 'universal", and indeed, there is only one catholic church. It is comprised of all Christians that have accepted Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. The “Roman Catholic Church” which is usually seen spelled with a capital “C” is by far the largest ‘catholic’ church in the world, but by no means the only one. There are Eastern Orthodox, Asian Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Serbian Orthodox, (and numerous other orthodox churches), the various Coptic Orthodox and Catholic Churches, the “Old Catholic Church”, the “Ecumenical Catholic Church”, as well as a number of others that use the term ‘catholic’ in their names. By the very definition, they are not any less ‘catholic’ that anyone else.

There are also a possible number of popes at any given time. The ‘Pope’ in Rome, is only the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. And many others can also show in documentation their claims to Apostolic Succession. Does this make them wrong? No. It’s a matter of interpretation.

Was Athanasius of Alexandria (St. Antony) an RC? I don’t think any scholar today would consider him such. Neither were many others of the earliest Saints. They predate what would today be called the Roman Catholic Church as we know it.

There is far too much misunderstanding today from all sides, the Orthodox, the Roman Catholics, and the Protestants. And I believe there will never be understanding until all agree to sit and converse calmly and openly, with their minds open to new thoughts and ideas. This is what the concept of reconciliation of the ‘catholic’ church is all about. I pray for it daily, but I doubt I will see it in my lifetime. There is still far too much bias, misunderstanding, and hatred in the world today for this matter to be settled. But I will continue my best to walk in the footsteps of Christ and work for reconciliation. Probably there will only be a full reconciliation of the ‘catholic’ church at the Second Coming of Christ!

Pax et bonum

The biggest whopper I ever heard was when, after being very explicit about all the repetitive statements our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ says in John 6, my sister actually retorted, “He didn’t mean ingest!!” I tried to get out of her exactly what the definition of “eat” was, as in “Unless you eat My Body and drink My Blood, there is no life in you.” But she demurred. Alas. Southern Baptists are like that, Popes-unto-themselves whose own personal interpretations of Holy Writ is better than anyone else’s. Probably comes from that “personal savior” concept they banter about. Pray for us, St. Agatha!

Hail Mary, full of sorrow, the Crucified is with thee.
Tearful art thou amongst women and crucified is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Tearful Mary, Mother of the Crucified, pray for us crucifiers, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Oh ya, one guy told me that the Catholic Church funded the holocaust…
Bizarre. I just glimpsed through a website that states that Adolph Hitler, Heinrich Himmler, and Joseph Stalin were ALL Jesuits! The absurdity. Then there was a program on the History Channel which dealt with Michelangelo being actually a secret protestant. It’s bad enough that some fundamentalists have tried to hijack the history of Christianity by claiming they are the true Christians and that Catholicism was a late starter, and that they have the garden tomb, which they believe is the true tomb of Our Lord, but now they want to grab one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance… Good Grief!!:ouch::ouch::ouch:

Hehehe… I heard that the Jesuits murdered Lincoln too. How’s this one, that Catholicism created the type of slavery we know of today. Prior to the Catholic/Sadducee influence on Rome, slaves were in servitude only temporarily. Why did God make so many people sooooo stupid…

My mother grew up a Protestant in the 1930’s, and her parents were both university educated. She was told to never walk on the same side of the street in the same block of a Catholic church, because she could be snatched by “Jesuits” and brainwashed to become nuns and bear the babies of the priests who killed the babies and dissolved their bodies in lime in the so-called “bingo hall basements.” She was terrified of seeing a priest in his collar on the street until she met my father who was a Catholic and gently disavowed her of those outrageous beliefs. She eventually became a convert, but only after her parents had gone to their reward. She did not want to traumatize them. Marrying a Catholic was bad enough for them.
