Hey everyone. The more I look into the Catholic faith, the more I realize that people in general just don’t like it. All I’ve seen were extremes; you either love it or you hate it. I haven’t really seen many in-betweens yet, especially among protestants. Personally, I love God’s church and look forward to joining it. But… why do so many people hate it? The Catholic church seems to get twice as much hate as protestantism and other religions. Maybe it’s just because the area where I live is mostly dominated by Baptists and non-denominational protestants. Still, they even seem to have a bad rep online. 🤷 What’s your opinion on this matter? :o

Yea MOO, it does seem that Catholics get more bashing, but they also make more extreme claims. Like infalability. Thankfully, they’ve given up the claim that no one outside of their church can be saved, but they still claim that wthout their sacrifice (of the Mass) no one may be saved. I think that the claim that riles protestants the most is that they gave us the Bible and thus they claim authority over it. Protestants say that God’s Word must have authority over everyone. Catholics claim that only they can know what God is saying in His Word. Guess He only speaks to Catholics!

You will notice that whenever a Catholic official is asked by the media to comment on a moral issue or whatever, they will always refer to Church teaching as the authority, and never the Bible. That’s because the think their own tradition is the more important, but no one seems to know exactly what that tradition is or is not. So it can be whatever they want it to be and then that is used as a club over you. Protestants only hit you with their Bible.

Hey everyone. The more I look into the Catholic faith, the more I realize that people in general just don’t like it.
People never like the Truth. Also, especially as it relates to Protestants, they hate that they might actually have to acknowledge someone else’s authority besides their own. Instead of their Sola Scriptura ‘I’ll-do-whatever-the-Hell-I-wanna-and-you-have-no-authority-to-tell-me-otherwise’ mentality, they will have to humble themselves before the Church and obey its doctrines and disciplines.
All I’ve seen were extremes; you either love it or you hate it. I haven’t really seen many in-betweens yet, especially among protestants.
It is very hard to remain neutral when confronted with the Truth. Protestants either have to recognize that their ecclesial communities were founded on lies and half-truths and that they have been indoctrinated with junk theology and reject it all in favor of the True Church or they can vehemently reject the True Church and return like a dog to its vomit.
Personally, I love God’s church and look forward to joining it.
Congratulations and welcome to the True Church, that Barque of St. Peter which is their to carry you safely–with your cooperation of course–to Heaven. Remember that the Church and the Saints who are now enjoying the Beatific Vision want us all there with them. Ask for their help, for their prayers, especially from Mother Mary. Find a good Confessor and receive the Sacraments of Communion and Reconciliation often.
But… why do so many people hate it?
Because Protestants realize deep down they cannot stand against the True Church. After all, we have history, logic and the Scriptures on our side. Protestants only have their incorrect interpretations (even according to each other…get an argument going between an Arminian and a Calvinist or a Free Gracer and Lordship Salvationer going…you’ll see what I mean) going for them.
The Catholic church seems to get twice as much hate as protestantism and other religions. The Catholic church seems to get twice as much hate as protestantism and other religions.
  1. Catholicism is by far the largest grouping among Christians (~1.2 billion)
  2. Remember that hatred for Catholicism is Protestantism’s single unifying doctrine. They cannot agree on the nature of Christ/God, they cannot agree on Soteriology, they cannot agree on how to interpret Scripture, but they can all agree, whether Baptist, Presbyterian, Anglican, Methodist, Non-Denominational, Pentecostal, etc…they can all agree the Catholic Church is wrong.
Maybe it’s just because the area where I live is mostly dominated by Baptists and non-denominational protestants. Still, they even seem to have a bad rep online.
I feel for you, I really do, but just remember you are making the right decision in becoming Catholic, you are joining the True Church and you are now going to have ~1.2 billion brothers and sisters (a lot more than Billy Bob’s Fundamentalist Cow Barn has got), plus all the Saints and Angels in Heaven rooting for you.

Study Catholic doctrine, especially its history, and be prepared to do intellectual battle with the Church’s doctrinal enemies. Learn the history, learn the doctrine, learn the Early Church Father’s, learn everything you can and always remember that Holy Mother Church is there for you. Remember that before Martin Luther was even a glint in his father’s eye, the Catholic Church stood strong, guiding the people towards Heaven–even when her leaders have been more imperfect, they have never changed her doctrine or her overall mission.

Again, welcome to the Catholic Church and, if you need anything or have any questions, please PM me.

Kay, let’s calm down please. I’ve fortunately grown up with great protestant family friends around me and they respect the Church very much. The only place I’ve come in contact with scary/ignorant/mean protestants have been online on forums akin to this one. But to let you know, they are out there and love the Lord and Truth as much as we do, they just need to be re educated. 👍

As for the secular society in general, the main reason they HATE the church is because we refuse to bend on little matters like abortion and the normalization of homosexual relationships when most every other denomination has gone soft on at least one major moral matter. 😦 We’re intolerant, mean, medieval, hateful, etc… Learn to live with it, being Catholic means picking up your cross for the looooong uphill battle.

A lot of people have been taught, sadly, even by their pastors, whether through intentional and sometimes unintentional ignorance what they think the Church teaches.Kalos,I don’t want to hijack this thread by responding to your misconceptions but if you would start your own thread we could have a respectful dialogue,Rocky.🙂

Read history… Over the centuries, at different times, the church has been run by some of the corrupt and violent men in the history of mankind. However, over the last 200 years or so she has actually been behaving herself pretty good… sex scandals aside. In the Church’s defense, she has also fed huge numbers of impoverished… sheltered many homless… established hospitals, clinics and educational institutions.

Religion is very divisive. Protestants have fought wars among themselves, persecuted others and committed evil deeds. Right now, Islam is on the move. This isn’t the first time either. If it weren’t for the Pope’s armies, Islam would have exterminated Christianity in Europe about a thousand years ago.

I noticed the hatred towards Catholicism throughout my youth. In school it seemed socially ‘okay’ to be a Christian. But being a Catholic was so fanatic.

I’ve always thought that the people who have negative things to say about the church are either just un-educated or poorly informed about the church. Believing whatever anyone tells them to and accept them as facts, in my opinion.

Well said. I think Bishop Fulton Sheen was referring to people like Kalos we he said there weren’t 100 people who hated the Catholic Church, but millions who hated the Catholic Church because of what they thought the Catholic Church teaches.

Before making stupid insinuations about the Catholic Church they should find out what the church really teaches.

There is just one simple answer to that question of why people hate the catholic church: It is the only true religion of Jesus Christ and the only church that Jesus himself established. No other church except for the catholic one was established by Jesus. The other protestant churches were established by man.

The hate originates from the Devil himself in his attempt to try and destroy the church of Jesus. That is why we are probably hated the most above all other religions, we are the true followers of Jesus. Remember that Jesus himself was hated and crucified for doing the will of his Father the God Almighty. The same goes for us. We belong to Jesus and we are true followers. Another reason of why they hate us is because some protestant churches dont have the enough followers desired in order to make money.

The protestants see us as competition and the church where they have to attack in order to make people go to their churches and leave ours. They are basically against us and all of our teachings and make anything up to hurt our beliefs. The protestant churches know that if they have no followers that means that they don’t have any money for that is the main purpose of the establishment of those churches.

I tend to see equal nastiness for Catholics and Fundamentalists of various sorts. If you look around this forum, you will see members of other faiths or non-religious people can at times be nasty and dismissive of Catholicism. But equally, Catholics can be nasty and dismissive of those other POV. I have seen threads that were quite nasty about Muslims, homosexuals, Mormons, Martin Luther… So I think your perception is not totally accurate - perhaps you are just more sensitive to attacks on the object of your affection and notice them more?

Some groups, Catholics, Fundamentalists, Some Calvinists, etc have a tendency to suggest that they are the only True way to god - not always in a way that is accurate to their own doctrine even, but it is commonly heard among adherents. So a Catholic might say something like We have the only True Church, and the Fundamentalist something like “if you don’t accept Jesus as your personal savior you will go to Hell!”

Such attitudes tend to tick people off if they are not understood sensitivly and it is, alas, human nature to paint all members of a group with the same brush.

Venerable Fulton Sheen once said, “Very few people truly hate the Catholic Church. Millions hate what they THINK the Catholic Church teaches. And if what they hated was the truth, Catholics would hate it, too.”

Jesus said, if they hated the master, how much more will they hate you?

They tout the Bible, but ignore it’s most central message. Obedience. It’s easy to be obedient to one’s own thoughts and opinions. No cross there. Then again, many hate the cross. Especially Jesus on it. 🤷

***Wecome to The CAF!

You are correct in your observation, and the reasons for it vary somewhat by region and person.

***Christ told us to expect nothing less: 11"Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you." ****

Logic affirms that there can only be a single truth for any specific issue. As the Catholic Church, as provided for, and guided by God Himself is the only place for “the single truth” on all issues of “Faith and or Morals” and ONLY F & M], we become by necessity a target for those who deem to know more, or know better. And for those of differing opinions.

In order to have any credability they MUST discredit the CC. There is no other way. What is so ironic, is that these attacks are anti-love, and therefore anti-biblical and put directly squarely in opposition to Almighty God. Romans 13: 8 "Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this sentence, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law."

The best advice I can share friend, is not to get caught up in this emotional display, that is unworthy of Catholics and Christians everywhere.

Pray for guidance before you post and reply, and when you log off then the Holy Spirit for assisting you.

Again, welcome to CAF!

Love and prayers,

Pat**

Wow, what a way to put it. But you are so right. We will not bend, twist, nor bow down to immoral things. Even in our own personal sins, we still try to live accordingly. I mean everyone who is anti-catholic see rules, rules, rules. Well if it weren’t for those rules and teachings, and most of all God’s word, we would be pretty slanted. The teachings truly guide us, even if it does mean we have to carry a cross along with it. We won’t bend for immorality. And yes we have many (billion) people by our side, and you will see no squabbling from us when it comes to understanding scripture. Because I feel that scripture has been interpreted correctly. It really bugs me when I hear those telling their own version of it. I may not understand all of it. But I go to those who have it right, not what they feel is right.

May God Bless you Abundantly:highprayer:

This post is a great example of what the OP was talking about 😦

because it shows a lot of ignorance about the Church… I’m sorry.

the Holy Spirit leads the Church in the correct interpretation of the Bible. We don’t place Sacred Tradition over Sacred Scripture, rather we let Tradition give us the interpretation of Scripture… and this works really well, because we don’t have thousands of conflicting interpretations like in Protestantism 🤷

doesn’t it say in the Bible, “the Church is the pillar and foundation of all truth” 🙂

when everyone interprets the Bible in their own way, the result is chaos, not unity…

I’ve noticed the same thing, sadly 😦

I think a lot of people have misconceptions about the Church… some Protestants don’t like it cause they think we worship Mary, think we can earn salvation, etc… so some of them don’t consider us to be Christians at all.

Then other people hate the Church because they want gay marriage or support abortion, etc, they see the Church as too “conservative”, “traditional”, etc…

I do notice more hatred for the Catholic Church than for others, and I noticed this even before I became Catholic.

I think that this just shows that it’s the truth though… 🙂 the devil would work hardest to destroy the truth and to lead people away from it with lies…

God bless

Look at this Baptist throw a fit over the OSAS doctrine. I really don’t have much to say about this other than he understands nothing about the Catholic church.

youtube.com/watch?v=NJWOf5PLCNY
that is so funny. to the ignorant he might look like he knows what he is talking about.

now, he has two Bibles. he compares them and makes a decision which Bible is correct. very funny. how would he know which is correct? where did he get his authority?

Never before has there been so much learning, and yet so little knowledge of the truth.

***Friend,

I find it necessary to correct your termonology. You speak of Cstholic “claims.” Friend, these are not mere “claims” they are ststement of facts. Which I would be happy to discuss with you.

Unlike Protestants who are somehow able to believe what ever they choose, often with not even a shred of solid evidence, Catholics may only mirror the mind, heart and Teachings of God’s Bride, His CC.

That is where the false concept of ragidity appears, and were we seem inflexible. It’s because there is and can only be a single TRUTH on any given issue. God Himself, in His Benolevance has seen fit to locate all of these truth that relate to “Faith and or Morals” [and only faith and Morals] within His CC.

This is a major reason that after 2,000 years of continous service there is still just One Catholic Church.

Only the CC benefits from these verses: John 17: 15 I {Jesus] do not pray that thou shouldst take them out of the world, but that thou shouldst keep them from the evil one*. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; thy word is truth. As thou didst send me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I [Jesus] consecrate myself, that they also may be consecrated in truth. **

Love and prayers friend,
