Anti-Mormonism.....

I say the mormons brought this upon themselves by engaging in immoral and sometimes even illegal practices. Joseph Smith was a conman. to say anything else would be incorrect.

Catholics were heavily persecuted in the US for years…so what?

this is really more simple than you seem to want it to be. Either Joseph smith was a true prophet or he was a fraud. there is no middle ground.

Read this and see the antimormonism that has existed in the United Sates. I have to admit that it does ring true for this section of the forum. I have this feeling that some catholics here would fit right in with antimormon history. 😦 What say you? :confused:

If speaking against lies, deception and false doctrine is “anti-mormon”, then I wear the name proudly. You, WhyMe, are trying to ride both sides of the road. Can’t be done. Catholicism is true, mormonism is false, you can’t have your cake and eat it too.

You would perhaps fit right in during those times. The same accusations existed back then also. But would you have burned them out? :confused:

I have often wondered if the catholics on this section of the forum ever heard of the divine mercy. Let me quote the Diary of Saint Faustina for you: 1689 ** My daughter, look into My Merciful Heart and reflect its compassion in your own heart and in your own deeds, so that you, who proclaim My mercy to the world, may yourself be aflame with it. **

I think that that says it all.

Perhaps you would fit right in also during the early 19th century. However, a merciful heart is a beautiful possession. It brings peace and understanding and compassion.

It began from the beginning of the lds church’s existence. And it spread like a fungus. A merciful heart was not to be found. Thus, the persecution.

I am reading the Diary of St. Faustina and I am almost finished. Think on the Divine Mercy…for a moment…and what happened to the early mormons and to JS from the beginning of the church’s foundation.

the accusations were warranted!!! Joseph Smith did bad things. it is not wrong to say so. no I would not have burned them out. I want to challenge your facts though. How many Mormons were “burned out” back then without having first provoked it? Yes I am familiar the divine mercy. Nowhere does it require us to accept heresy or tolerate bad behavior. it is right and good to stand up for the truth so that others will not be deceived but will be led to the truth.

why don’t you read an accurate version of history and see what he early mormons were doing. they were at fault.

From the very beginning antimormon books appeared. What did the mormons do to provoke it? Such literature spead intolerance and fear and persecution. A persecuted people close ranks to survive.

And if ‘they’ were at fault…should a community be persecuted? I contend that antimormonism began extremely early, right from the beginning.

Following Joseph Smith’s martyrdom, Brigham Young introduced an oath in the endowment which required members to swear vengeance “upon this nation.” It became the subject of a United States Senate Investigation.

Reed Smoot was a Mormon Apostle who had been elected a Senator from Utah. In 1903 a protest was filed in the United States Senate to have Hon. Smoot removed from office, on the grounds that he had taken this treasonous oath in the endowment ritual. The complete record of this episode was published in:

U.S. Senate Document 486 (59th Congress, 1st Session) Proceedings Before the Committee on Privileges and Elections of the United States Senate in the Matter of the Protests Against the Right of Hon. what does this have to do with antimormonism? After all the persecution experienced by mormons in the United States, it would be a natural reaction to the lack of religious freedom in the United States at that time. However, words are words. And asking god to curse the nation for its unrighteousness may not be nice but it is understandable given the persecution.

However, if true, I would not agree with the statement.

what persecution? you have yet to get into specifics. these people were joining a group that was controlling their actions. their leaders were directing them to do bad things. people didn’t want this and spoke out against it. they attempted to protect themselves in court as well. I do not condone any acts of violence but I certainly agree with speaking out against what is wrong. do you think that now the US government should drop all action against the FLDS that we should stop “persecuting” polygamists? right from the beginning the LDS were led by dishonest men seeking personal gain at the expense of others.

what is wrong with those books? a free society encourages people to speak their mind. from the very beginning mormons taught false doctrine and engaged in bad behavior. how is this different than the branch davidians in Waco? they “closed ranks to survive”. your awfully eager to accept a one sided revisionist view of history. perhaps you should some of D. Michael Quinn’s works. he was the LDS historian until being exed for telling the truth.

So you are troubled that people did not show mercy to mormons? I agree that humans are unmerciful. But again, you really are approaching early mormon history very one-sided. Injustices and unmerciful behavior was going on on both sides. And, you aren’t really practicing the Divine Mercy.

People here are not persecuting mormons. No one is getting injured, except perhaps egos. You are taking the mormon view that any speaking out against mormonism is anti-mormon. This is a Catholic Apologetics site. If you read about Catholic Apologetics, you will see that it not only includes defending faith, but also contrasting against other faiths and pointing out follies, inconsistencies, indecencies and heresies.

You will need to read the link to get the specifics. Your post is filled with judgementalism. It is your perception of mormonism and this perception would have been yours back in the early 19th century. Sometimes it is wise to leave the judgements to god. Humans tend to be bad judges in such matters as this.

Have you read the diary? In the Diary, Saint Faustina received alot of persecution from the sisters in the convent. Many were not very nice to her. Some judged her wrongly. But she showed them mercy.

In the case of antimormons, the judgements that came from such humans were unjust. The lds church was persecuted from its very beginning. No one deserves persecution. This is my point. If people had mercy in their hearts, such persecution would not have happened. And a lot of pain would have been avoided.

I will tell you what is wrong with this post. You are in the midst of a bunch of anti-Mormons, and complaining to them for being anti-Mormon! That is like complaining to the devil for being the devil! You don’t. You declare was on the devil and fight the devil; but you don’t complain to the devil. When you complain to the devil, you are treating him as though he was a gentleman, which he isn’t. If you treat the devil like a gentleman, he will jump on your back and have an easy ride. But if you hit him hard, then he knows his place and behaves himself as he should. The devil is no gentleman, and you don’t treat him as though he was one.
