Any Black Lives Matter Catholics here?

It seems like there are a variety of instigators, some of whom may be infiltrators, acting out some “Purge” fantasy, or trying to discredit the protests.
As someone wrote in some thread it’s a carnival atmosphere at this point. The lure of free stuff and the opportunity to run wild.

Or they could be Antifa? I saw a video yesterday of a black woman telling two young Antifa members (girls) all in black with coverings on their face to stop vandalizing a Starbucks while using BLM as a front. Another, of a bunch of white kids breaking down the windows of a bank, and spray-painting anti-capitalist slogans.

It was disgusting to say the least.

Yes. But mixed in with that lot are those who are genuinely peaceful and are trying to get across a powerful message. They’ve felt unheard for a long time. Sadly, they’re still not being heard, now in part because of the looters.

It’s not just the looters. It’s the wanton bringing of chaos. And the Catholics here excusing the violence and chaos have no understanding of the common good. They don’t care anymore.

My statement doesn’t minimize any of this. It emphasizes it. But, if you wish to misinterpret my intent, that’s your problem, not mine.
I’m not sure why you think I’m addressing you. I’m talking about people who always answer back to Black lives matter with All lives matter as if the former contradicts the latter; At best it’s deliberately misunderstanding what is intended by Black lives matter. I don’t think I even had you in mind before this post.

By reading some of these posts, it’s a little hard to think that. The protestors have been called “thugs” on this thread and by President Trump. So what is the black community to do. The protestors have been peaceful. The rioters and looting have another agenda which is being condoned.

No one is calling peaceful protesters thugs, it’s the ones that are protesting violently that are.

Some have Josie. Read up-thread and Trump. But let’s agree to disagree.

Why is there more talk and/or concern over the protesting, rioting, and looting? I 100% disagree with the rioting and looting. But what on earth is wrong with protesting against the injustices within the black community.
I was reading what @Phatmass1 and Rubee and you were writing in the first few days and really came to understand better how you were feeling by your open sharing, and then the violence started and I felt a sense of wondering how to respond to that given what was for me a new understanding, but mostly I was thinking what you expressed here, that the voices of the protesters about a real and important injustice was being drowned out by the violent people and their actions, and how this has happened Every. Single. Time.

And I was also thinking about the article @WillPhillips posted and analyzing why that kind of did not resonate with me, and I had an idea in my mind of protesters praying, just praying, on their knees, and thinking that might be a more Catholic response, but think about it, it would really differentiate the true protesters from those who take over and make the news all about them and their destruction.

Well, those are thoughts I am having, not fully put together and possibly not logical or something, but I think that breaking the cycle of protesting becoming rioting and looting or at least the quasi-association between the two, because that just drowns the message and exhausts everybody.

Sincere question not necessarily directed at you: What is the difference between a criminal and a terrorist? Between an act of crime and an act of terrorism?
I would not be able to adequately answer that, but the president is saying he can invoke an act from 1807 called the insurrection act that allows him to send in the military now. I am waiting for political comment on that as people consider it.

‘He said he may invoke the 1807 Insurrection Act, which permits a president to deploy military inside the U.S. to deal with civil disorder.’

“And listen to me, be careful where you are getting your information to JOIN protests!! There are people and other countries who are posting things pretending to be US, pretending to stand for peaceful protest, but they are trying to incite us into violence and chaos to try and do more harm!! Do not fall for this foolishness!!! Please stop the violence!” Perry wrote.

Thank you, Annie, for being reflective. The media shows images that make headlines. There have been silent protests, protests where people laying down in parks, protests on the sidewalks in designated areas for protest. Some cities have city ordinances where protestors must keep walking, so they are in the streets. In Memphis, the protests have been peaceful with protestors doing just that sitting and praying, yet you don’t hear about that.

That is a very big problem in international politics; and I must say, not an easy one. One man’s freedom fighter is often another man’s terrorist. I do not, for example, lump Palestinians in with international terrorist groups like Al-Qaeeda, Al-Shabaab, etc, because I do not see their cause as remotely similar. Nelson Mandela was labeled a terrorist in the U.S. during the Reagan administration if I remember correctly. As a person from that continent, I cannot tell you how preposterous that seems to me. Yet that’s what it is. It’s never as easy as people sometimes make it seem. I do not know about Antifa but have they sponsored terrorist attacks? I know a bit about Black Lives Matter (the slogan) but that’s it.

I thought about this many years ago: a freedom fighter is someone who attacks the military of an opposing nation or militarily valuable targets while minimizing civilian harm and who follows the Geneva Conventions for doing so.

A terrorist is one who usually attacks civilians and does not follow the Geneva Conventions.

The Geneva Conventions require protecting civilians, including wearing some identifying article of clothing and not hiding among civilians, etc.

Both terrorists and freedom fighters fight for some political type of goal, criminals just act for themselves.

Terrorism is the use of violence by non-state actors against civilian targets for the purpose of political intimidation.

It is a slippy definition to be honest. The covering of statehood manages to excuse what can be far more lethal and damaging operations under such titles as ‘national security.’ Terrorist groups carry out property damage and assassinations etc. We bomb from the sky, and do things like the Phoenix Program.
