How many times do you take your bible into your services.
why should we? we have bibles and we can read them at our own time yes? when in the mass, isn’t it better to just LISTEN? I find it distracting if we are expected to do “bible-studies” in a eucharistic celebration.

Exactly!

I suggest that ppasa316 get a copy of Scott Hahn’s “Lamb’s Supper” to learn just how much Scripture there is in the Mass.

Or read this link
This link
and most ESPECIALLY this link

How can you find it distracting for you to bring God’s Word to service.
Why do I have to being it when I am surrounded by it?

Did you not bother to read the links I provided?

And have you forgotten that the readings of the day are provided to the congregation via the missalette? There is no reason to take my Bible with me to Mass, since scripture is provided to me and surrounds me from the very moment I walk into the Sanctuary.

i think he wants us to be like them. follow ML ideas. they dont seem to understand we are Catholics and not protestants. we get the Word from the Priests. they dont have priests therefore they must read the Bible on their own.

**
BLESSED TO BE CATHOLIC.**

Did you read this? I knew the Mass had a lot of Scripture, but it made me positively giddy to see just how much there was!!!
It’s like we are BATHED in scripture. Pretty awesome!

yes. it all Scriptures from beginning to end. they cannot understand since their services are not Scriptural. they based their beliefs only on the reading of the Bible. while we Catholic actually live through Scriptures. live the Word of God.

:highprayer: :signofcross:

The Word (that is Jesus) is present in the eucharist.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him: and without him was made nothing that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

I can relate when it comes to frustrations involving Calvary. I’m glad to know that there are other people out there who had experiences like what I had to go through.
For reading my experience, read my next post.

I am going to break this into a few seperate posts. Here is part one:
Here is my experience:
I was born and raised Catholic. During middle school and high school my faith was weak for the most part. I didn’t really a whole lot of attention to anything, even during confirmation classes. I also grew frustrated with classmates who went to my church since they would do things that I thought were questionable.
During the last few weeks of my senior year in high school, (a public school) someone from Calvary invited me to a little bible study that took place during lunch once a week. For the most part, it would just be a half hours worth of reading a few verses and little chit chat. Eventually I would notice a small problem when it was the second to last week of school. One kid who was in the group was at first not part of any church. He eventually became a Mormon, which infuriated many in the group. I obviously didn’t say anything. Later on that same day, the group was talking about something taking place at a local Baptist church. They started slamming Baptist doctrine. Being the only Catholic in the room, I thought that they were going to slam Catholicism given the pace they were going at. I politely excused myself, and then left. I wish I would have interpreted this as a warning in regards to what was to come.
I eventually had to go to the Calvary in my home town, since my mom requested that I go to church with an uncle who had occasional seizures. He lived in walking distance from the local church. It started when he had a seizure on Good Friday of 2006, requiring him to go to the emergency room. She requested that I go with him to the Easter service with him. For the first six months of going there, I got more involved; partly do to the “novelty.” I would then go on a men’s retreat where I would tell some people my frustrations I had with my parish. Their eyes lit up at the idea of someone leaving the Catholic Church and joining their little “crusade.” I would get more involved in that church and start listening to the pastor’s radio show. Then I would start viewing things that the pastor disagreed with as “satanic,” “messages strait from hell,” and even make a few nasty remarks about other religions and other people. This was based off things the pastor said.

Here is part two:
Two months later, I first started paying attention to their views of Catholics during a broadcast where the pastor bashed the Catholic Church and a quote from St. Augustine during his opening statements for Revelations. I would quit listening to the radio station, but made the mistake of continuing to go to Calvary. My uncle would mention to some guy that he still viewed himself as catholic a few weeks later. That guy went off about “Why you should go strait to God to absolve your sins instead of some other man.” I would later notice some subversive remarks about communion at “other churches” and how it is not a “covenant of legalism.” It would escalate to remarks like “If the church you go to doesn’t allow non-members to join in communion, you need to find another church.” He would even brag about “new bread and fresh grape juice.” Note that the “bread” was just packages of oyster crackers. That particular remark was the first sign of discomfort, because I was offended by his lack of respect for the significance of communion. I will point out that their communion is on the first Sunday of every month, and that they have a few guys pass out some oyster crackers and then some grape juice, and say a few prayers, as opposed to walking up to the people serving communion. You are basically trapped if you don’t want to participate in their communion and you are present.

During the sermons, I would gradually hear more and more negative remarks, not just towards Catholics, but also towards Jews, Muslims, Lutherans, Pentecostals, Unitarian Universalists, Buddhists, Mormons (who they refer to as cults), and many other groups of people. On top of that, a few accusations involved “not reading the Bible.”

During those times, I would occasionally go to the Catholic Church every Sunday with my mom. I would look at the missals that the church had, and the first thing I had noticed was that there were more bible verses recited during mass than I would here at a Calvary service. (Note that it took over a year for the pastor at Calvary to go through the gospel of Luke) It was quite noticeable that there was never any bigotry towards other faiths at the Catholic Church that I went to. This was the turning point for me. I figured that I would just go to Calvary just to watch my uncle until I would move out of town. This didn’t come to pass.

See part three for conclusion…

Here is part three (the conclusion):
During a baptism service and a barbecue where the baptisms took place afterwards, the pastor trumpeted his “beautiful baptismal font.” It was really a horse trough filled three feet high with water. He would say that “if you were baptized as an infant or in a cult, you need to participate in the baptism ceremony.” He would bash infant baptisms, baptism via water being “sprinkled” over heads, the idea of baptism being the initiation into the church, and take that time to bash Unitarian Universalists as well. I got annoyed after a kid who got baptized bragged about being saved during a bike trip. His parents who adopted him publicly bragged about how they made someone baptized Catholic leave and join their church. That was two weeks before I left.

The last straw was when I went to a service where they had a guest speaker (Dr. Thomas Kendall). He had a slide show and speech “arguing for a young earth.” He spent most of the time accusing Catholics, Protestants, Dr. James Dobson (the Focus on the Family guy), a Jewish scholar, and many others supporting evolution instead of God. He would trumpet “scriptura sola” and other movements that they were vocal about. After every derogatory remark, people would shout “Amen, Brother” at the top of their lungs. This was in September, 2008.

I told my mom what happened, and she finally said that I no longer had to watch my uncle at Calvary every sunday. Obviously, I left. I would post the bigotry that took place on Google for information about churches in my home town. I am glad that I never declared membership or got baptized in that church. I was hopeful for my uncle, since he and I went to a cousin’s wedding out of state, and when a mass was held for the couple. It was a Catholic mass and he still participated in communion, so I know that he hadn’t officially joined Calvary.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience at a Calvary Chapel. I attend a Calvary in Houston and have loved everything about it. The only question that I have is did you search the scriptures to see if what the Pastor said was true. I know we talk about different religions from time to time. Only when we come across scriptures that present itself to talk about them. We don’t bash them we only talk about the misinterpetation of how they use scriptures. If you get a chance try listening to Calvary Houston on the internet. God Bless

Is their “misinterpretation” based on YOUR interpretation of the passage?

Do tell me about how The Gospel According to St. John chapter 6 is supposed to be interpreted.
And that whole “symbolic” argument doesn’t hold water, btw

Cmon be for real. WE should never interpret the scriptures on our own interpretations. What part of Jn 6 would you like to know. I know Catholics always use this chapter to debate the scriptures. It doesn’t matter if you don’t believe if it holds water on symbolism. Jesus said he was the Bread of Life as a symbol not as actual bread v.35 but in v 27 "Do not labor for the food which perishes but for the food which endures to everlasting life. He was speaking in a spiritual sense. God’s Word doesn’t change it is the same yesterday and today and forever. Please do not misinterprete the scriptures. Rev 22:18 - 19 says to not add or take away from God’s Word. Please check with someone who knows the scriptures if you are not sure how to respond. James 3:1 says “My brethren let not many of you become teachers knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.”
God Bless

Really? So you KNOW what the Bibile says based on…? What your pastor says? What the guy who founded your denomination says?

Sounds like personal interpretation to me!
