When did Gretchen release her new single. Ya know, here in So. California, country music ain’t as caught-up as in other parts of the country…(and country music has the majority of the listeners in San Diego Country)…

So, what are your predictions on Carrie Underwood’s career?

Carrie Underwood’s second reliease, “Jesus, Take the Wheel” is FLYING UP the charts.
Billboard Magazine Debuted the song AT number 39 and the new chart just released today for the week ending 11/12 has the song already AT number 25 with only TWO weeks on the chart.

Carries first charted song “Inside Your Heaven” only got as high as #52 with 12 weeks on the chart.

If Carrie stays with the ‘traditional’ sound, she will be successful. IF she strays a bit to pop, then things will take longer for her to abtain any success.

Gretchen’s new song has been out for at least 4 weeks now and should break into the Top 30 in a week or two.

Did anyone catch the Country Music Awards last night?
Suprised by Keith Urban receiving the Entertainer of the Year, but finally gave it to someone who really deserves it.

Lee Ann Womack…coulnd’t happen to a nicer person. I’m glad she ‘came back’ to the traditional sound.

I’m starting to 'feel ’ old when you start to remember the two winners of the Hall of Fame are artists that I’ve enjoyed and grew up with: Glen Campbelland Alabama!

Vince Gill…the only reason why he isn’t the MC, is because radio audiences are passing him by on the charts. Vince was funny as usual whenever he shows up on the CMA! Come back Vince and start recording some Great music again!

There were A LOT of inspirational songs last night: Brooks & Dunn “Believe” (actually sung solo by Ronnie Dunn), Brad Paisely & Dolly Parton “When I Get Where I’m Going”, Carrie Underwood “Jesus, Take the Wheel”.

Two urprises of the evening performances:
Bon Jovi going country? He does have a song released “You Can Go Back Home” and to be honest, I like it!

Second surprise, George Strait’s voice is showing it’s age and he didn’t sound great singing live.

Of course, Garth Brooks making things interesting by singing “Good Ride Cowboy” live from Central Park…what’s wrong Garth, can’t you sing with the rest of the industry in Madison Squarer Garden?

The traditional sound is slowly dying. Today’s music is so popish it is sickening. Rascal Flatts? :banghead: Toby Keith is surprisingly popular although I don’t like his commercial brand of country. I HATE SHANIA TWAIN!!! She should not even be in the country scene she is so pop. Disgrace I say. A disgrace. :mad:

My license plate reads “2CNTRY” which is the title of a Brad Paisley song that describes the dissipation of TRADITIONAL country music. (sort of my rebillious side coming out with that plate, but nobody knows the true meaning behind it).

I am 38 and from California and everyone asks me how I got into country music cause there are few around here who do. When I was a kid, “Smokey and the Bandit” was one of my favorite movies and I loved Jerry Reed’s “East bound Down” with its banjo and dobro picking. I am now learning to play the banjo.

If you like country and are looking for some uplifting music then consider Bluegrass. Sure, there are some very sad, obnoxious, depressing songs, but most of it is fast, uplifting, energetic music. I love the instrument playing more than the singing though.

Yes, I have her self titled debut album and love, “Never again, again”. But there werent too many other traditional tunes from her since. I will look for her new song that you mentioned as well as the others. I have been a bit disappointed with Brad Paisley. His first two albums were very good but he has gotten a bit corny with his recent efforts. I really like that song with what’s her name and Elton John. He did a good job but would love it even more to hear the duet with Alan Jackson or other traditional artist. Joe Nichols is traditional but although I like the melody of his latest song, the words/subject matter is stupid…“Tequila Makes Her Clothes Come Off”. Give it a rest I say. :rolleyes: You don’t hear stuff like that from George Strait or Alan Jackson. They keep it clean, except for a few harmless drinkin’ songs. 🙂

Gretchen Williams has a few good tunes also but I project she will turn into a female Toby Keith…let’s see how long it takes for her to commercialize.

One of my favorite songs to date came out of a local boy from San Jose, California, named Tim Murphy. His song about five years ago was titled, “Bottom of the Fifth” Great song…sounds a lot like Joe Diffie.
 
It’s really a shame that the ‘traditional artists’ are not being played on radio anymore:
I would include Joe Diffie, Mark Chesnutt, Tracy Byrd, Dwight Yoakam, Randy Travis, Lorrie Morgan and Patty Loveless.

Lee Ann Womack’s recent CD is the one you’d probably want (the Album of the Year).
It should be easy to find in the stores.

We also need more Allison Krauss on the radio too!
 
Yep, you named the main ones I miss too. I would add Tracy Lawrence and Clint Black (Clint did what Bryan Adams did in rock and roll…turned soft). Probably my favorite artist is Alabama. Too bad they called it quits last year; probably felt the heat in the pop kitchen too. Vince Gill is another I miss. Despite Allison Krause’s enormous success with Union Station, I see her kinda of in a pickle. She totes herself as more bluegrass so the only way she gets air time is to pop/country-it-up which means she will alienate her bluegrass fans. Ricky Scaggs is bluegrass through and through but he won a Best Country Performance by a Group or Duo with Vocals for “A Simple Life” in '04. So there is a traditional country fan base out their. It just won’t bring in the numbers that Music Row demands…such a pity. I suspect someday soon someone will do what Ricky Scaggs has done for bluegrass and start a label signing only traditional artists and promoting them. That would be nice.

Thank goodness for Alan Jackson, George Strait, Brad Paisley, Joe Nichols, Daryl Worley, Derks Bentley, and Lee Ann Womack for their efforts. Somehow they have maintained their traditional roots and managed to stay on the air. I don’t understand why they can do it and the other artists can’t.

Over the last few months, I have been listening to country music a lot. I used to be more of a fan of rock music and classic rock, but so much of it seems so sad or angry. I find country music a lot more uplifting and generally favorable to traditional values and Christianity. What do you all think?

Maybe I’m showing my age, but most of today’s “Country Music” is just bad Rock n’ Roll.

Appearing in the upcoming edition of Billboard Magazine Country Chart dated 1/21/06:

George Strait just tied Conway Twitty for the most #!'s in Country Music history. They each have 40. The song George did it with is called “She Let Herself Go”.
 
I have always thought of the best country music as those that tell a story. Most of the old country songs did that and I think of those songs as American folk songs. Some of them are sad, sure, but isn’t life sad sometimes. One of my favorites are the Kenny Chesney ballads. Some of his other stuff is too Rock and Roll. The video he did for “I Go Back” is actually old home movies and people from his growing up years

There are many others that I like, but their songs tell a story…

I have become a country fan in the last 10years or so. Cross over artists got me interested since I was big into Lynyrd Synyrd and the like in the 70’s.
I like most of the “guys” who can play good patriotic country Rock like Toby, Montomgery Gentry, etc.

However, it the ladies like Martina Mc Bride and Sara Evans whose CD’s I buy. Sara is a VERY talented gal with a powerful voice. Sh eis a dedicated Mom who tours with her husband (on guitar) and their three young kids. Martina is also terrific. Even better my daughter enjoys the music and looks up to them. I am so much happier knowing that she has Sara Evans and Martina Mc Bride as Celebs over the raunchy teen pop and rap performers.

I like Big an Rich’s Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy, but the traditional stuff…meh.

It’s funny you mentioned Johnny Cash; I have been listening to Country Music all of my life, but I really never liked Johnny. I always thought he was an amazing song writer, but they way he sang just bugged me. For some reason, I started listening to him three weeks ago and that is all I listen to now. I have three of his CD’s in my car and I have been rotating them constantly.

Even though he did not write it, I love the song “Hurt”. You can tell that he was in pain when he recorded this song; which makes it all that more meaningful. My wife will break out in tears when she hears it.

Rest in Peace Johnny.

The whole “American” series is really impressive.

I like quirky country. Which means a lot of alt-country, nu-grass, and the like.
