Any Episcopalians here?

I don’t know what that even means.

Are there any Catholic doctrines or dogmas that you struggle with, yet you agree that are part of God’s revelation?
I didn’t know what Lapey meant either. 🤷

I’d have to think about it and I’d like for the thread to be less about me and more about the OP’s question from this point on if possible. But off the top of my head I can’t think I’d struggle with much that I would for certain believe to be part of God’s revelation. God bless and peace.

DR was at least at one time a very popular Catholic edition of the Bible.
Indeed.

And the porneia mistranslation is in it.

This is from the NCCB website: whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits adultery."

Sunlight90, I guess if you want to follow the NCCB website on at least the matter of divorce over a version of the Bible long considered to be a Catholic Bible @ that, then there’s your answer I guess. And again, whatever path you choose to walk with Christ, be it Catholic, TEC, or any other, may His peace and blessings be with you always.

Huh?

Ok. What is Matt talking about? Why is he using my post to respond to Sunlight?
Because I was trying to get the topic back on track to the OP. And you said the Douay Rheims had a mistranslation in it but the NCCB site has it correct. So 🤷 I suggested for the OP to follow the bishops’ site rather than the Douay Rheims Catholic Bible edition on at least the matter of divorce if he/she wanted. I also thought you would like that. As I was encouraging the OP to follow the NCCB if that is who he/she wanted to follow. I was doing what I thought was a good Catholic thing and suggesting the OP look at the NCCB website if he or she wanted. 👍

And, I’m not going to belabor this point with you, Matt. I appreciate your honesty and you are a man of character, that is clear.
Btw I meant to thank you, PR. for this. That means a lot to me. You appear to be a woman of honest character as well. God bless and peace.

Ok probably just the difference in our definitions of omniscient. Webster defines it as knowing all things. And infallible means to know without error all things declared infallible. Like I said not interested in getting into a semantics debate here.
Fair enough.

But I will address your egregious misuse of the word.

The CC has NEVER EVER claimed to be omniscient. It has NEVER EVER claimed to be “knowing all things.” :whacky:

And for Matt to say, essentially, well, I’m just using a different understanding of omniscient than you are is also :whacky:

It’s like someone posting, “Barack Obama is Canadian!”
And when someone says, “Huh?”
The poster responds, “Well, I’m just using “Canadian” as in “North American” so in this sense President Obama is North American.”

Incidentally, I think you have an impoverished understanding of the Church’s teaching on Infallibility.

I think you’re being coy here and NOT at all honest. :sad_yes:

PR, I confess I was being a bit coy or probably more likely simply attempting a bit of tongue in cheek humor there to lighten things a bit because of how I am strung on the stake sometimes by my Catholic brethren (not necessarily by you PR!) here on CAF for not passing their Catholicity litmus test. But I did get out there nonetheless for the OP to take a look at the bishops in doing so if he or she wanted.

Posts like this are why I love ya, Matt! :hug1:

And if I may say so, you are not being “strung on the stake”–only being called to “truth in advertising”.

You really ought to know your faith better when you state, as a Catholic, things like, “The CC says ______” For much of what you profess to be Catholic teaching is just not true.

Backatcha PR :hug1: But we might as well spread the love and you, me, CARV, Gurney, Lapey, Sunlight, et al! have a :grouphug: and celebrate our unity in Him! 👍

But the Church advertises me a Catholic too. And I don’t profess a belief I’m discussing to be Catholic teaching if it’s something I dissent from Catholic teaching on. I’ve even been known to place a disclaimer in a post or to even say “this is not CC teaching”. But when I have defended the Church on how we don’t worship the Blessed Mother but honor her. And how the statues of her I even have in my home are like pictures to remember her by, I was proclaiming Catholic teaching in that case. You may be referring again to omniscient/infallible. I said the Church only proclaims being omniscient on defined doctrine concerning faith and morals. Omniscient means to know all. Infallible means to know without error. My *Outlines of the Catholic Faith *booklet (Well I’ve actually worn the cover off but I’m pretty certain that’s the name of it) states “the Church can not err when teaching faith and morals”. So that’s where I received information that the Church proclaims to knows whatever She declares infallible on faith and morals. But if She doesn’t, then I am sorry and stand corrected. God bless you and peace!

There you go again, Matt, proclaiming* another* Catholic doctrine! 😛

See what a* good thing* it’s been for the Catholic Church to develop this “elaborate system of doctrines and dogmas”? Else, how would we be able to talk about what it is that God has revealed? It’s a good thing to be able to avail ourselves of dogma and doctrine, yes?

👍 You must have offered up more than one or two intentions for me then! I’m heading out now so if I get a a good parking space… 😃

Of course. And CARV et al are our brethren in Christ.

I applaud your candor and your truth in advertising. 👍

That’s one example, yes. And to all lurkers who are again confused by Matt’s statement, please know:

[SIGN1]The CC does not claim–nor has it ever claimed–omniscience. Not even in the areas of faith and morals.[/SIGN1] There is no Church document, no statement from a pope or the Magisterium that has ever used “omniscient” with regard to the Church.

I will certainly take the credit for that good parking space! 😉

It’s my all time fave blessing to receive. When I’m in heels (which is often since I’m short!) and a close parking spot suddenly opens up–Wow! :dancing:

Like I said, your understanding of Infallibility (as it applies to the CC) is impoverished. Not wrong exactly, just lacking.

So the booklet is correct–the Church can not err when teaching on faith and morals.

But here’s the good word on that:

Infallibility works only negatively. The Magisterium is prevented, by the intervention of the HS, from teaching what is wrong; however, it is not compelled by the Holy Spirit to teach everything that’s true in the way of faith and morals. (Incidentally, this is why the Church teaches that doctrine can develop, but not change)

Thus, infallibility has nothing to do with omniscience.

PRmerger,

You are not adding salt to the wound. That was precisely my point. The Catholic teaching on divorce might have saved my marriage. I can’t say with certainty. I was definitely suffering in the marriage; and my son was, too. So, I don’t regret the separation; but I do regret the divorce. That one decision, made nearly 20 years ago, led to so many heartaches and the effects continue.

Anna
Yes–and separation, but not divorce, would have been the option the CC proferred.

Thank you, dear sister, for sharing your story. I only said the above to correct any misunderstanding that some might have about the CC’s teaching on divorce. No priest ought to counsel a couple not to separate, especially in situations of abuse/violence. (Not that this was your situation, of course)

I love your signature. I’ll keep that in mind, next time I get a perfect parking spot. :dancing:

I’ve been following your discussion with CMatt25. It’s kinda like watching a ping-pong match. I’m holding a trophy for the winner. lol :yeah_me:
