Sorry if I am being prejudice but I seriously did not think I would find a thread like this on this forum.

Glad I did though.

Regarding the heavy metal I would list these as some of my more favorite bands:
Pantera, Slayer, Deftones, Sepultura, Immortal, early Korn…

I don’t think I listen to very much music apart from heavy metal and just "metal’’ in general. And if I am not listening to metal I do enjoy a nice classical piece, Dvorák, Bach, Liszt…
From what i can tell there are more people on this site that listen to heavy metal than those that like to drag race or even farm.😛

i agree that slipknot looks scary, for that reason they don’t really appeal to me…try turning your kids onto some classical type music then they cna true metal “fans” as you may have noticed most of those who have posted here also seem to have a leaning towards that type of music when metal is not avilalbe or something different to listen too.
***Hello 👋

Yes, I’m trying, my dd likes to play guitar, and takes lessons, so right now, she’s dabbling with various genres…the ones that intrigue her most are the heavy metal, throaty singers. 🤷 I said to her one day…do you have any idea what that man is singing about??? :o She said, no, I just like the guitar. :o They should save their voices – no one cares what they are singing about. 😛 (Bullet for My Valentine is her absolute fave–I wish they were coming to Florida some time soon, I’d take her to see them. If I dare. lol )***

Electric Guitar, on Heavy Metal…

I could be wrong, but in my opinion, I have not heard anything better to learn from than:

Yngwie Malmsteen

Here there is a link to a video from youtube.com . There you will listen “Dream on” from Aerosmith performed by Yngwie Malmsteen on the Guitar, and with the Voice of Ronnie James Dio.

Here you have the lyrics, it’s actually a classic. Maybe she likes it, there are lots of videos on youtube.com teaching how to play his songs, and I can assure you there are many tricks to learn from him or even from Steve Vai.

Lyrics said:
Dream On

Every time I look in the mirror
All these lines on my face getting clearer
The past is gone
It goes by, like dusk to dawn
Isn’t that the way
Everybody’s got their dues in life to pay

Yeah, I know nobody knows
where it comes and where it goes
I know it’s everybody’s sin
You got to lose to know how to win

Half my life
is in books’ written pages
Lived and learned from fools and
from sages
You know it’s true
All the things come back to you

Sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tears
Sing with me, if it’s just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good lord will take you away

Yeah, sing with me, sing for the year
sing for the laughter, sing for the tear
sing with me, if it’s just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away

Dream On Dream On Dream On
Dream until your dreams come true
Dream On Dream On Dream On
Dream until your dream comes through
Dream On Dream On Dream On
Dream On Dream On
Dream On Dream On

Sing with me, sing for the year
sing for the laughter, sing for the tear
sing with me, if it’s just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away
Sing with me, sing for the year
sing for the laughter, sing for the tear
Sing with me, if it’s just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away…

Much obliged for posting that! Thank you. I have a thread going in another section about my dd playing guitar, and Steve Vai was brought up…I am home from work today, and will have to check out your suggestions. Merci! :tiphat:

Bullet for my Valentine is my favorite too. Going to see them this summer! I have been following them since before they were popular. Their guitar music is good… if she is really into guitars, have her listen to Avenged Sevenfold (if she doesn’t already). They have the best guitar parts… my fiance and I play it all the time!

I’d say dare to take your daughter. I’ve been to a number of heavy metal concerts and there has never been a problem from the fans. They are all just normal people who like the same kind of music and want to have a good time. I’m sure your daughter would be very grateful to you if you took her to see them.

I posted on a similar thread several weeks ago.

I am 36, married, four kids… and I love metal music. Always have, always will.

Used to play in several bands… bass player/vocals in some and just vocals in another.

My favorite metal bands run the gamut, but I am not going to say that I avoid certain bands because of lyrical content… that would make me a hypocrite. 🙂 No, I listen to whatever is appealing to me, of course I do not LET music influence my actions or thoughts. That is the difference. It’s just music, regardless of lyrics.

I listen to anything and everything from cheezy pop metal (hair band glory days galore) to the most brutal death-core metal you can imagine, but in between I even listen to Backstreet Boys if I want to. Good songs are good songs and every different song ads to the soundtrack of my life.

I could start of my day with a nice dose of Strapping Young Lad, Faith No More, Stryper, Jelly Jam and Iron Maiden and throughout the day fill my ears with the likes of Black Sabbath, Killswitch Engage, Northern Kings, Mortification, Rammstein, Puya and Dragonforce… and then end my day with Simon and Garfunkel or the soundtrack to Last of the Mohicans. It’s all good to me.

Enjoy a good head banging… enjoy the melody and harmony and the occasional screaming vocals.

Go for the ear piercing ‘Viking shrieks’ or the guttural ‘cookie monster growls’… go for the Drop D tuning or the standard presets… whatever the music may be, just make it what it is… ‘an entertainment… NOT a lifestyle to model your personality by’.

ok… that’s it from me.

Two words for your DD: Dream Theater 😉

The singer isn’t growly, but the musicianship is excellent! 🙂

***lol, ‘growly.’ One way to describe it! 😃 Thank you, I’ll show her this link…

Chad–I just might take her to see them…they don’t make large appearances here in the states, for some reason. I was going to take her last spring, but they weren’t playing…and when they were, it wasn’t like they appear at large ampitheaters or something. I thought it was odd. I’ll have to keep tabs on their whereabouts…we’ll see. ***

I was hoping to rescue this thread before it slid off of the second page and into oblivion. So, in that attempt would anybody like to chime in with their favorite or perhaps top five favorite metal or hard rock albums? Not necessarily the best ever just your favorites. I’ll start off the fun.

Led Zeppelin, IV
Megadeth, Hanger 18
Black Sabbath, either Paranoid or Black Sabbath
Metallica, Master of Puppets
last but not least Slayer, Reign in Blood

This certainly isn’t an exhaustive list, but it’s a good start.

 idea chad:
April Wine’s greatest hits
Dio Sacred Heart (just for the title track)
Iron Maiden Number of the beast
Metallica Master of Puppets (again)
AC/DC back in black
and many more:p

I second the Maiden and AC/DC additions … how could I forget those classics?

How about Judas Priest, British Steel? If not that one then I’m sure one of their other albums.

Oh, man, just five? Where to start! 🙂

I had to start by jotting down all my top, top favorites, which yielded 25 albums. Then I (painfully) whittled it down from there! 😉 Here are the results:
  • Ayreon - The Human Equation
  • Dream Theater - Scenes From a Memory
  • Kamelot - Karma
  • Royal Hunt - Paradox
  • Savatage - Dead Winter Dead

My all-time Top 5 metal albums, in no order:

Anthrax - Among The Living
Dream Theater - Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory
Queensryche - Operation:Mindcrime
Crimson Glory - Trancendence
Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son

Special non-metal award to Pink Floyd - The Wall for instilling in me a love of concept albums that is evident in my Top 5!

Someday Kamelot’s Black Halo or albums by Sonata Arctica, Blind Guardian, and Theocracy will probably make their way in there, but for now, they’re still too new to me to be in my favorites of all time 😃
