Good insight. Most of the Haugen-Haas hymns tend to mirror pop music with their lyrics: bland and relatively meaningless. Metal music is more likely to tackle more meaningful topics (there are exceptions, of course!)
I’m trying to imagine a Marty Haugen version of “Run to the Hills”. Perhaps it would go something like this:
-]White man/-] People came across the sea
-]He/-] They brought us -]pain/-] joy and -]misery/-] harmony
-]He/-] They -]killed/-] loved our -]tribes/-] people, -]He/-] They -]killed/-] recited our creed
-]He/-] They -]took/-] received our -]game/-] love for -]his/-] their own need
We -]fought/-] loved -]him/-] them -]hard/-] much we -]fought/-] loved -]him/-] them well
Out on the plains we gave -]him/-] them -]hell/-] something swell
-]But/-] many came -]too/-] to -]much for Cree/-] give us glee
-]Oh/-] Our Lord will -]we ever be/-] come to set us free-]?/-]
Riding through -]dust/-]clouds and -]barren wastes/-] heavenly places
-]Galloping/-] Frolicking -]hard/-] with joy on the plains
Chasing -]the redskins/-] our sorrows -]back to their/-] into a hole-]s/-]
-]Fighting/-] Loving them -]at their own game/-] all the same
-]Murder/-] Peace for freedom -]a stab/-] joy in -]the back/-] our heart
-]Women/-] People and -]children/-] people -]the cowards attack/-] how great is God’s art
Run to the hills run for your -]lives/-] love
Run to the hills run for your -]lives/-] peace
-]Soldier/-] People -]blue on/-] avoiding -]the barren/-] environmental waste-]s/-]
-]Hunting and killing/-] Saving Mother earth their -]game/-] aim
-]Raping/-] Loving the women and -]wasting/-] loving the men
The only good -]indians/-] people are -]tame/-] everyone
-]Selling/-] Giving them -]whisky/-] water and -]taking/-] giving -]their/-] them gold
-]Enslaving/-] Embracing the young and -]destroying/-] caring for the old
Run to the hills run for your -]lives/-] hope
Run to the hills run for your -]lives/-] joy
