I think you would like their “Brave New World” album that came out in 2000. I think the song “Wicker Man” has a feel like “Phantom of the Opera.” One of my favorites though is “Run to the Hills” – it’s about the conquest of the plains Indians by the white settlers. You might also want to check out their song “Fear of the Dark” and their albums “Powerslave” (really cool cover) and “Seventh Son of a Seventh Son” (another cool cover).

I also like the song “Number of the Beast” but some might find the lyrical content somewhat objectionable.

Powerslave is definitely one of their better albums. One of my other personal favorites is Piece of Mind. In my opinion, it’s right up there with Powerslave as one of Maiden’s best. Dance of the Dead is one of their newer albums that has some really awesome stuff.

run to the hills is favorite,as is number of the beast,which is not as objectable as 22 accia avenue i haven’t heard it for a long time but i did like the way the song was put together musically
aces high/two minutes to midnite.
 
I read through this entire thread and I’m surprised that no one mentioned Ill Niño. They are a Latin American nu metal band from New Jersey with several albums out. The song that is running through my head most lately is a ballad called Me Gusta la Soledad (I like Solitude), from the album Enigma, but it isn’t typical of their music. They’re not officially a Christian band as far as I know, but most of their songs and lyrics are biblically inspired. 👍

It’s good stuff, but it helps to have at least a rudimentary grasp of the Spanish language, because they sing in both English and Spanish
 most of the time in the same song! It also helps to have a grasp of the culture of Latin Americans living in the U.S. especially if you’re using online translator tools. :cool:

For instance, there is a lyric in the song I mentioned above that sings “me tomas los pelos”, which literally translated says “you take my hair” or “you pull my hair”, but usually means “you tick me off” (or even in some cases “you turn me on”), but in this context it becomes a biblical reference to the story of Samson and Delilah and means “you make me weak” or “you take my power” or even “I am powerless in your presence”. For someone who adores well-written lyrics like I do and is dating a fella who is a metal music fan, it’s a win-win. 😃

I forgot about Dance of the Dead. There’s some good stuff on that album. I also like their most recent album A Matter of Life and Death. I think their recent stuff has been all high quality.

LOL. 😃 They are handsome, eh?

My BF sort of looks like Dave (but a little younger and without all the piercings). He was the one who loaned me the CD, and he sings the songs to me all the time and helps me translate them and understand the nuances of the language
 I’m still learning.

I had a friend in high school (way too long ago) who got me started listening to metal. I used to go to sleep to Metallica cranked up on my headphones as a kid. It was the only thing that would drown out the screaming in my house so I could get some sleep. :o

I love your C.S. Lewis quote in your signature, BTW.

This is the third year in a row they’ve put up a special Christmas song. Although, this year’s is an original song and somewhat less serious. Last year they had “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”, and the year before that was a medley song including “We Three Kings” and “O Holy Night” (among others). It pays to check their website around Christmas time!

For all those who love Powerslave, you MUST get Live After Death
that’s the live album from the Powerslave tour
takes Powerslave to an even higher level.

Another album not mentioned that is just plain awesome is Killers. The song Murders in the Rue Morgue is probably the best off of that album

I grew up in the 80’s just LOVING heavy metal. Like everyone else has said in here, Iron Maiden was my absolute fav. I also liked Ratt, Kiss, Dio, and Ozzy, etc. I love the sound of the music. I play guitar and I really appreciate the talent. I was a big Zeppelin fan, huge fan. I especially loved Dio and Ozzy’s vocals.

But here is my problem with all that stuff as a Catholic (and please don’t take me to be a prude!!)
Look at Dio and his album where a Catholic priest is being choked to death with a devil in the background. Not exactly something I’m sure the Lord would approve of. Or take Ozzy holding an upside down cross in the background with a black Satanic bible on the table and a black cat on “Diary of a Madman.” Hmmm. Not exactly a Catholic album lol. Or listen to “Highway to Hell” and then the most sad of all–Iron Maiden singing “666 the number of the beast, 666 the one for YOU AND ME!” and I get bummed. When Iron Maiden got a point where they wrote a song called “Judas, Be My Guide” we should all stop and wonder!?

That’s why I listen more to progressive rock and other stuff than metal. While I know these guys are not REALLY satanists, just the jovial attitude toward it and flirtation, the way they are willing to upset Christians and try to provoke them with dark material, bugs me. Anything that glorifies the devil, even if it is a bit campy, isn’t something that’s healthy for Catholics. That’s why I gave up listening to that music.

I’d be lying through my teeth if I told you I wouldn’t love to listen to “Run to the Hills,” “Aces High,” “Somewhere in Time” and “Flight of Icarus” capped off with “Over the Mountain” and " Goodbye to Romance" right now! I just hate the baggage that comes with that genre. It’s too dang dark and given to the occult.

it has an excellent wholesome very Catholic, or at least non-Catholic Christian sounding message to it
so, now you have at least one head banging song to listen to

I love metal. I remember the first time I saw Pantera, They were playing at a club years ago. We were too young to get in but with the right clothes and fake id. Well, at least I got in. hehehehehehe

If it makes you feel any better most really are not devil worshipers. And if they say they are Satanists, Anton LaVey did not even believe in a real Satan (though there is theistic Satanism), it was a metaphor.

But some do market using the dark imagery. It sells.

There are a lot of death metal bands out there though, especially in Europe, who are Luciferian. They worship a real Lucifer. You would probably pass out if you heard the lyrics, those that are in English that is. I will not buy it or listen because I know for a fact, some “bless” the music before, during, and after. I do not want any dark attachments.

I am not Catholic but
the only time I ever felt guilty or weird about metal was at a Marilyn Manson concert, maybe 7 or 8 years ago.

May have been around the year 2000. He came of a flaming cross wearing chaps (no underwear), bat wings, and a very large phallic symbol. He was trying to goad all the cops there to arrest him. Of course everyone was egging him on and screaming.

Then he went into song, and after got the crowd to chant the G Dam word. Most were. BUT THEN
He reversed it, to get everyone to yell Dam G! And my God, you could tell we lived in the bible belt. It was so quiet, seconds before we were all acting like hellions and cussing. Thousands of people got very uncomfortable, First raising hell and then all gasping, mouths open, looking at each other, and was like
“What did he say? I’m not saying it, or you saying it?” And as God is my witness you could see a bunch of heads look up to the ceiling, I think we were looking out for lightening to strike us,.

Found later that he is a honorary member of the Church of Satan (LaVeyan), though not a real devil worshiper. But still, you have to draw the line somewhere. I love the music but can’t go with that message he sends.

Personally I think he suffers from MPD.

There were several Fundamentalists who were watching the concert and filming for a documentary. Freaked me out when I realized they were right next to me and a friend, filming us dance.Was sooo glad I did not say the dam G word! And I hope to God I never see that film! LOL!

I have sat front row at quote a few concerts, Rob Zombie is into something too, I could feel it.
