Wow, a (mostly) power metal thread on CAF! I quit CAF 15 months ago, but you’ve inspired me to log back on and post! 😃

I was into (and still am) all of the old classic metal bands back in my younger years: Metallica, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and the like, with Joey-Belladonna era Anthrax being my favorite. Now, power metal is my thing, with prog metal to a lesser degree. I spend about 90% of my music-listening time on Sonata Arctica, Kamelot (Black Halo is unreal), Edguy, Blind Guardian, Nightwish, Rhapsody, Dream Theater, Threshold, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Avian, Crimson Glory, and others.

I occasionally produce power metal concerts in my town, so I’ve had the great pleasure to be able to meet and work with some of these bands and it’s a total blast 😛 I attend ProgPower in Atlanta about every other year.

And yes, the more traditional the music during mass, the better. That’s a big surprise to me that all the metalheads feel that way!
Any Theocracy fans here? I just picked up their new album “Mirror of Souls” and it is a power metal masterpiece! This guy writes the kind of music that I would want to if I had any musical talent. 🙂 It’s Christian, but it’s done well. If you’re into power metal at all (and even if you’re not ;)), I highly recommend it.

Here’s one of the tracks:

Laying the Demon to Rest
Oh, yes, BIG TIME! I’ve been getting into the Christian power metal bands (Narnia, Rob Rock, etc), but Theocracy is by far my favorite of them. I am a huge fan. In fact, I run their myspace page

They’ve got some other excellent songs there for people to check out:

myspace.com/theocracyband

Now that their new album is out, they will finally be playing outside of their home state of Georgia. Right now they have shows scheduled in Texas in March and Switzerland in May, with more dates to come.

Any power metal fan looking for a power metal band who sings about Christ and does so powerfully without being cheesy, please check Theocracy out! 👍

Welcome back to CAF! 👍

And thanks for the link to Theocracy. I just listened to their samples, and you’ve just given them a new fan!

In Mass: Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony!
Elsewhere: Metal!

I’ll have to give Theocracy a try after hearing so many positive reviews here.

I happened across a new thrash band named Evile on Youtube that had the whole classic 80s-90s thrash metal sound down. Not sure I care for the name and I didn’t pay much attention to the lyrics but liked the sound.

Welcome back to CAF, Wampa. 🙂 Didn’t you start a Theocracy thread a few years back? I remember that one.

Theocracy releases a Christmas song for free on their website each year. The Theocracy Wikipedia entry has links to all the old ones, which still work for downloading them. The most recent one (“Rudolph vs. Frosty”) is by far my favorite. This way, anyone can put some tracks on their ipod to hold them over until they get the CDs (even if it is after Christmas). 😉

Didn’t you start a Theocracy thread a few years back?
Yep, that was me, way back when I first learned about the band.

And Rudolph vs. Frosty is brilliant! 😛

I recently discovered an interesting Catholic metal band from Italy called Metatrone. I bought their CD and I’m not sure that I’m overly impressed yet, but I adore the song “The Rock”:

I’m glad to be back!

While searching youtube to find Metatrone’s The Rock, I ran across this nice Christian power metal sampler. It’s got Seventh Avenue, Boanerges, Theocracy, Metatrone, Seven Angels, and Sea Of Dreams.

The Theocracy clip is from the song that first got me into them 5 years ago - called Theocracy. It’s an awesome song taking the political idea of theocracy and applying it to one’s spiritual life. To this day, it’s still THE metal song that best sums up how I feel about God.

If you’ll indulge me, here’s two of the verses and the chorus. This pretty much sums me up right here:

At the center of my heart there sits a throne
That the rightful occupant’s not always
free to call His own
For how can I give the King
His place of worth above all else
When I spend my time striving
to place the crown upon myself?

and the would-be rulers of my heart
that I place upon the throne
each lead the kingdom of my life to ruin
to bring every thought into submission
to tear the idols down
is to break the chains, to rearrange,
to give the king his crown

I TAKE MY CROWN AND CAST IT DOWN
CASTLES BURNING
CASTLES BURNING
LEARN TO GROW, GROW TO BE
A FLESH AND BLOOD THEOCRACY
TO TAKE THE LOSS AND BEAR THE CROSS
RAISE THE KINGDOM
RAISE THE KINGDOM
BURN AWAY ALL IVE BEEN
TO RESURRECT THEOCRACY WITHIN

I speficially remember driving down the highway, cranking this song, singing the chorus out loud and TOTALLY rocking out, and thinking “This is the first time I’ve been able to do this with a Christian band and it doesn’t feel cheesy as I’m singing it!” 😃

I agree!
Except that I listen to hard rock too… =] im trying to get my friends to give up their silly hip hop/r&b or whatever its called and listen to this type of stuff… but most girls dont like it… sigh

are there any other girls in this thread??

Haha wow, what a badass.
I’ll have to check them out! Those lyrics are great.

LOL, I’ve thought almost the same thing when I sing along to their music as well. 🙂 That’s still my favorite song of theirs.

Try Master of Puppets (album or song)…Classic!

and being a Catholic Forum…I’d also say Creeping Death. Tells the story of the Angel of Death (Passover). Anything of 1988 vintage or earlier is great (although, Kill 'Em All is not my favorite “early album”)

God bless,

Well, after promising never to buy another Metallica album, I finally succumbed the other day based on the recommendations here for their latest album, “Death Magnetic.”

Finally…the boys are back!!!

Yeah the smiley behind the drums is snarling kinda like Lars, too. 😃
Yeah, I noticed that, too. But the guitarist and bassist seem so happy! 🙂 I guess it creates a nice contrast. Melody and power together!

Joe 5859:
But the guitarist and bassist seem so happy!
Kirk seems like he’s a happy guy whenever I see him. Rob though…he seems intense…

Cool smilies nonetheless 👍

Bumping this thread up with my list – not in specific order of preference:

Metallica
Slayer
Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Kiss

Reading about Theocracy here I am checking them out. Their music is great. Still getting adapted to teh singer’s style. Really enjoyed “Laying the Demon to Rest”

It’s not metal, but it’s about metal, and that’s what counts: Hats Off to Halford! (click the ‘play’ button on the videoscreen)

ps: don’t know if I said it before, but Judas Priest is wonderful and even if I did it bears repeating 👍

Has anybody watched “The Metal Show” on VH1 with Eddie Trunk. I know Eddie has been around the metal scene from its inception but he needs to bone up on his metal trivia knowledge before he plays Stump the Trunk.
