Anybody Else Here Like Joyce Meyer Too?

The more conservative church she was formerly in taught that “tongues” had, as scripture says they will…ceased… at the close of the apostolic age.

ACTUALLY, scripture nowhere states WHEN tongues will cease. It merely states that tongues will cease. If you read the whole context in which that statement is made, it strongly implies rather that tongues and such will cease at the end of the Age, not at the death of the last apostle, when we fully know Christ just as we are now fully known by him, and that Love alone will remain .

The Bible nowhere, not ever, states that tongues will cease at the end of the apostolic age or the end of the first century A.D. or what have you. That is something anti-Charismatics read INTO the text. But it isn’t there anywhere.

Jaypeeto4…I believe you have either misunderstood or misinterpreted my statement or perhaps I did not make it clear enough or maybe you are even being defensive about charismatics.

**I **was not saying when tongues will cease. This was the doctrinal teaching of the conservative protestant denomination that Ms Meyer was originally a member of, i.e. that tongues ceased at the end of the apostolic age.

So far I too have **never **heard Joyce Meyer
criticize Catholics or the Catholic faith itself.

I have heard her speak out against perceived legalism,
but that is rampant in some protestant circles,
so she need not have been aiming that at Rome.

I have been listening to Joyce Meyer’s program “Enjoying Everyday Life” every day for about 6 months and have yet to hear her criticize Catholicism - directly or indirectly. I have also read about six of her books during this time period. Her work has been an abundant blessing for me and my wife! It has done nothing to draw me away from our Church. On the contrary - I have never felt closer to our Church. 🙂

Listening to her program has indeed made a huge difference in my life. I have been a life-long Catholic, very active in my faith. None-the-less, I have greatly struggled in many areas of my life. Through her work and openness about her life, she has helped me to understand the roots of my many of my struggles and why they have been preventing me from growing in my relationship with our Lord.

Joyce has helped me to understand the residual affects of abuse from my childhood and how to overcome them through my relationship with Jesus. Reading her book “Approval Addiction” was a huge turning point for me. It likely saved my marriage. It helped me in ways that years of counseling have not.

I’m not saying that Joyce is right for everyone. However, I have not found anything like her work anywhere - inside or outside the Catholic church. I have tuned into EWTN numerous times and have not found anything close to what Joyce has helped me with. EWTN has very important information, but I don’t find it draw for those who are hurting.

If anyone knows of any Catholic programs or books related to overcoming abuse, I would be very interested in taking a look at them.

One last point, my opinions of Joyce have evolved over the last 6 months. I don’t think someone can obtain an accurate opinion just by viewing her program once or twice. In fact, I really didn’t like her at first. I found her book “Approval Addiction” simply by searching for that phrase. I came across that phrase in David Burn’s self-help book “Feeling Good”.

Again, I don’t think Joyce is for everyone. However, she has had a huge positive impact on my life. God has used her to communicate what I’ve needed to hear at this time in my life.

Whether or not I agree with all of her theology is not important to me. If you are strong in your faith, why should this matter? That is why I think it is important to read from a variety of sources. Please do let me know if you know of other teachings that deal with overcoming the affects of childhood abuse (especially Catholic).

Thanks for listening.

Okay, she’s not a Catholic and I AM a Catholic,
but I gotta tell you, I thoroughly enjoy watching Joyce Meyer’s
Enjoying Everyday Life program.

With wit and humor and a bit of self-deprecation, this woman
delivers a daily dose of practical biblical wisdom for daily living.
Sometimes she even causes me to bust out laughing.

I really like Joyce Meyer.
Is anybody else here a fan of hers?

False teacher. Not a fan.

False teacher. Not a fan.

We can’t put her in the category of a Catholic who KNOWS the Faith well and then deliberately rejects it and willfully teaches what he or she KNOWS to be heresy.

Joyce is an evangelical-charismatic.
I understand she used to highlight a “prosperity & wealth” gospel, but I’ve been watching her for months and haven’t seen her do that.

I’ve never heard her teach an out-and-out lie.
Protestants are false teachers more in the sense
of the Catholic truth they leave out rather than the
truths they do have. I think her intentions are good,
and most of what she says is quite helpful.
We of course have to be discerning when it comes
to non-Catholic speakers.

Maybe not, but we can put her in the category of a false teacher.

OK. I’ve been preaching and teaching the Gospel for thirteen years now. Name one thing I, or anyone associated with my church, has ever taught that’s Unbiblical.
I think her intentions are good
Her intentions are to prey on the doctrinally illiterate and make a lot of money.
We of course have to be discerning when it comes
to non-Catholic speakers.
Honestly, I don’t see any difference between her false teaching and Roman Catholic false teaching.

Even mainstream evangelical Christians are recognizing this woman’s heretical teachings. You must be VERY careful listening to this woman. She does not stay in line with Christian theology on many levels, Catholic or Protestant.

I suggest finding a more suitable role model… There are entirely too many other good Christian speakers out there to be paying any attention to someone who says the things about Christ that this woman does…

Here is an article by the Christian Research Institute, a Protestant ministry. The article is frightening.

with 4 pages already i admit i didn’t read them all, but doesn’t Joyce claim that people are “mini gods” and that we can change the future by speaking positive?

I like her books… as I read them they don’t seem too out there…her books have helped me but I would say… take what you can use out of them and leave the rest:shrug:

I don’t get that from her books:shrug:

but I read many Catholic writers as well…

Joyce is not my “role model.” 😛
I find her program practical and uplifting.

The complaint by CRI is from a pamphlet she wrote 16
years ago in 1991. I had never even heard of her then.
I’ve been watching her ENJOYING EVERDAY LIFE show for months and have never heard her say such ridiculous things as that Jesus suffered in hellfire for our sins. She may believe that to this day, but she hasn’t said it since I’ve been watching her.
( I HAVE heard Kenneth Copeland AND his daughter Kelly Copeland assert that Jesus was tormented in Hell )

Like I said, I watch her because she deals with practical day to day issues with the scriptures as a basis.
OF COURSE, I am going to disagree with her at times
because I am a Catholic and she is not.

Again, I still believe there are plenty of orthodox Catholics you can listen to. Bottom line, this woman has led many people away from truth… if you want to subject yourself to this, it’s your right. I, for one, won’t waste my time listening to someone who holds such heretical viewpoints of my Lord and who thinks that they are above falling into error or making mistakes… Many of her viewpoints are rejected by Catholics AND Protestants alike… there is a valid reason for this! She may use Scripture, but it doesn’t mean she’s using it properly.

I have listened to Joyce daily for almost a year and I fail to see where she is heretical in any way. I believe this whole “to do” about “little Gods” is simply misunderstood or overblown. Perhaps if you only listen to the phrase out of context you would gain a different meaning. (I’m not assuming that you did or did not).

The reason I listen to her is because she has helped me to overcome the abuse that I experienced in my childhood and how it’s affected me in my adult life. She has helped me grow in leaps and bounds closer to God and the church - not away from it. I am now more active in my parish and read the bible daily. I found her book “Beauty for Ashes” life-changing.

Do I think Catholics (or anyone) should listen to her exclusively? No, and I don’t. Also, I’m not looking for her to be my theological guide. I don’t agree with everything that she says and that’s fine with me. I read and listen to teachings from a variety of sources including Catholic.

The bottom line is that I have not found anything Catholic or otherwise that have helped me more than her teachings and books in this area. Not even close. Frankly, I owe her a debt of gratitude. Counseling has helped a lot but it did not bridge the gap for me. She has helped me to understand and become unbound from my past. I believe that Joyce Meyer’s teaching and books helped save my marriage.

If anyone knows of Catholic programming and books that cover some of these same areas, please mention them here. I would be highly interested and grateful. 🙂

Thanks,

This is just nuts! Little gods?!?!

EXACTLY why I believe there are plenty of other people more worthy of my time!
She also teaches that Jesus paid the price for our sin by litterally suffering in hellfire!

All I can speak to is a couple of her books which are helpful…but then I only look to her as a christian motivational speaker…

I will say, she keeps speaking of works? why does she single this out:confused:

Joel Osteen is a heritic also. He makes the gospel all abouit gaining material wealth, rather than having our sins forgiven so we can avoid punishment in hell.

Osteen obviously skipped over these verses:

Mat 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
Mat 6:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
Mat 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
