I didn’t drown but stayed with catholicsm just a short while and went beyond Christinity. Still a firm beleiver in God and happier more content than ever. You might think about looking “outside the Christian box.”
“Beyond Christianity”? For the sake of Christ, and for your own sake, have another look. It is not a “box”, it is freedom from darkness and sin-they are the box. He is the “alpha and the omega”. He existed before time and will exist when it ceases.

Whom are you following now, might I ask?

I’m in a unique situation I think. I’m signed up for RCIA, and at first my family seemed supportive. But now, that has changed. They don’t want me to become Catholic. I was born a Protestant, I am told and should remain that way.

I am told that since I am the most devout person in my family, I am responsible for making sure they my sister, her husband (not raised in the church) and their kids go to church. My sister has been married twice before and I am sure would need annulments and her current marriage convalidated in the church in order to be accepted (the first husband was physically abusive, the other walked out on her over a very nasty situation involving her child and his).

Somehow I feel that I responsible for my own soul first. I cannot answer for what others do or have done. I am being encouraged to remain protestant for the sake of my family situation. What do I do?

You listen to One voice. I understand their fear, but you need to go where you think you are being led by God. Let God take care of the rest. You can better help your family if you are where God wants you to be, His agenda is sometimes far different and far better than those around us who care, but not perfectly.

Does that make sense?

Breathe. Take it one step at a time.

I don’t know why so much pressure is put on me religiously, by my mom especially. I think there are alot of control issues there that have not made it to the surface. I can only follow the Holy Spirit, which seems to be leading me to the Catholic church. I know the spiritual rewards will be much stronger if I am obedient. I think I am going to sit down and have a serious talk with the lady.

It is interesting that they look to you to lead the family spiritually.
Perhaps assure them that you are meeting that obligation by converting to Catholicism.

If indeed they expect you to lead them spiritually, certainly you would want to be sure you are leading them in the right direction. Catholicism offers the Real Presence of our Lord, Jesus and other sacraments that will bring the intimately closer to Jesus than any protestant denomination can.

They’ve trusted you this long because they obviously see the relationship you’ve developed with Jesus and they want to experience that for themselves. Ask them to continue to trust that you are on the right path.

You must do what you believe God is asking of you. Pray for guidance–continue to trust him. He loves you. We don’t always understand everything that goes on around us or just what is best. Though you do have a Christian obligation to be a living witness to your family and all those around you, you cannot be responsible for their decisions. They, like you, have free will. And who is to say that you becoming a strong Catholic Christian will not provide an even better witness to lead the rest of your family to heaven? Does these that discourage you claim to know the future?

RCIA is a journey-- sometimes it progresses relatively quickly, some people spend years learning and discerning. All of these things around you should not stop you from seeking God, His Truth, and all the blessings He wishes to give you. Whether you decide to become Catholic at the next Easter Vigil, 2 years from now, 5 years from now, 10 years from now, or never has to be a decision you make on your own with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. You can’t let someone else decide for you, because you alone will have to answer to God for your decisions, your actions, and your inactions. Seek Him… Ask Him to show you the way. Follow Him.

It is wonderful that you already have such a strong faith. Use it to discern what God wants for you. Entrust the rest to Him. He will take care of you and your family. In Baptism, we belong to Him, and He knows how to care for those who belong to Him–far better than we ever could ourselves.

What is your mom’s own spiritual life like? Is she close to Christ, or does she at least believe that she is? Does she practice her faith?

I’m just trying to figure out why she was previously supportive and now is changing her mind. Anything that you know of could have triggered some panic in her mind? Has someone been talking to her and scaring her? Do you have maybe a book, something easy, about the Catholic faith that may help her to alleviate this panic she’s having? Just a suggestion. 🤷

Maybe this is at least a place to start if you are going to talk to her. And after you get to the bottom of it all, assure her that you are following where the Lord is leading, and that will never be a bad place for you or your family.

And if it doesn’t help to have this talk, you still need to be faithful to what you believe in your heart of hearts is the course of your spiritual journey. I will pray for you, for the courage and strength to get through this hard time. Many of us have had similar experiences in coming home to the Church. Know that you are not alone. :gopray:

No, you are definitely not alone… I have lost several friends I once thought would be ever loyal. And though my parents accept my decision and even came to the Easter Vigil, my dad has serious problems with Catholic theology (and in some cases his misconceptions about Catholic theology). He is constantly doing and saying things he knows will sting or start an argument or pressuring us to go to some Protestant church instead… He got really angry with us when we refused to skip Mass on Christmas when the whole extended family was gathered (even though we never missed a Sunday when I was a child).

I even get resistance from my husband’s family who are Catholic, because they don’t get my intensity of devotion and persistance at going to Mass every Sunday even when it is a real sacrifice to make the time. (They don’t think Mass every Sunday is all that important–and they really raise eyebrows when I talk about daily Mass.)

It isn’t easy, but despite all of this, my life is much better. I still have most of the same struggles in my life, but I am better able to deal with them now. And I am much happier and better person than I was before. I know that God led me here. Meanwhile, I continue to hope and pray that all my family and friends will have at least enough of a conversion of heart to understand and accept my choice–maybe even consider the same choice.

God bless you! I will be praying for you, too.

JohnnyReb,
Only by following the Holy Spirit will you know the fullness of truth. Your heart is seeking the truth, rather than just maintaining a family tradition. You alone can lead the rest of your family to the fullness of faith. The Protestant churches have truth in them. But, the fullness, completeness of truth remains with the church that was founded by Christ Himself.

None of your family has ever been in the physical presence of Christ. It is an awesome experience. You want a personal relationship with Jesus? Come, eat His Body and drink His Blood. You can’t get more personal than that. It is spiritual nourishment that lasts an eternity. Have a look at John 6:53 and 1 Corinthians 11:23-29. The Lord Jesus and Saint Paul said these things for a reason.

Stay the course, my brother in Christ. You are in my prayers.

Just wondering if anyone starting the process of converting to Catholicism, but then, half-way through, decided not to go through with it because Catholicism was more than one thought it was. 🤷
I don’t see how, as there are plenty of life-guards!

Thanks all for the prayers and words of encouragement and wisdom. I feel them already.

(snip)

Don’t look back–swim with all your might–and you will cross the Tiber on Jesus’ shoulders!
Love that analogy!

I once heard someone say “doubt your doubts”, but I don’t know where it originated from.

Catholicism is rich and deep; the more you get into it, the more you find.

Peace,
Mimi

“Doubt your doubts” 👍

The only faith in the world that has existed for nearly 100 generations; is the fulfillment of an even older faith; is celebrated in every nation on earth by hundreds of millions of adherants (some of whom risk imprisonment!); was founded by the Son of God, is just bound to have such depth, such unbelievable spiritual strength, and to be so beautiful that no one person can possibly be acquainted with it all! The Lord knows we are all different, because He made us that way. Why do you think He founded such a universal church? One in which you can find a mass in every nation in the world, celebrated in probably every known language. This all points to the fact that truth is also universal and is longed for by every human heart.

Many are the stories of pilgrims that have needed years, perhaps even decades, to enter into full communion, but willingly persisted because of the rewards both in this life, and in the eternal. All who are considering, please stay the course-the love that awaits you will overpower your doubts and concerns. God did so with me.

The peace (let evrything go and just revel in it) of Christ be with all of you.

Sometimes, I take time to read thread such as this one - it lifts my spirit up and it is a great way to start my night prayers.

Thank you all for your sharing and your supporting to one another!

God bless.

It’s just a good thing we are spread out all over. If we attended the same parish, we’d all be bickering about something! But, that’s good, because the disciples practiced it regularly 😃

Praise Jesus.

My sister and her kids came with me to mass today. She seemed to enjoy the service, although I had to explain what was going on using my limited knowledge.

The big difference between mass and Protestant church “services” is that mass is the sacrifice of Christ made present to us. It is not a re-creation, or a re-sacrifice. It is the one sacrifice of all time, to which time does not apply, that is being made present to us. This fact leads to many disagreements over the music, clapping, etc. at some masses. Many, such as myself, believe that it should be reverent most of all. Bless you on your journey. Check back with us, as we are praying for you.

Christ’s peace.

Ironic thing was, my niece was the only one who asked why we couldn’t go forward to receive the Eucharist. I told her you had to be a member of the church to do that. She said that I was able to have it at my old church, so why not here? I told her I was thinking about changing churches, that this church was more fulfilling to me. My sister asked what was with the metal book and the “Jesus stick” that they brought in during the Mass.

Thanks for the prayers
